Free agents seem to move for money and/or success. We can't offer one so we have to offer the other. I think it is inevitable that we will be seen to "overpay" if we secure a player from another club. But the Eddie Betts to Adelaide move indicates that the first judgment of a free agency decision (ie most people thought Adelaide overpaid) is not always proven correct.

Don't reckon that's the right tone to make the point.

Yeah your'e right, just frustrated at the lack of understanding between our salary cap and club funds its a bit of a bug bare. I love MM and her style of posting, brings a fantastic element to different threads.

Just make sure you come and pull other posters in line when they go after me in the same fashion next time too! ill be waiting. :)

In regards to get Rance and Dixon I hope the club is aggressive and if they have to pay overs then so be it. It is the nature of the beast especiall for where we are at. Would they make us a top 8 side instantly, i don't think so but they certainly would help. Rance is a free agent so won't cost us anything apart from $$$. With Dixon however I hope we maintain our first round pick (2-4 at this stage). We will most probably let Luey and Aish go and whatever we get for them should be used to acquire Dixon. So let's say early pick in the 20's as compo for Luey and a possible player swap for Aish.

On the contrary, I think we're in a position to offer both. Having said that, I also think neither on its own will get the type we're after. The midfield we have is good incentive (IMO) for KPPs to consider us as a likely success with their inclusion, but will still have to pay through the nose for them. If we had a much worse midfield, the acquisition of a couple of KPP would do little to promise success, and even a million $$ alone might not be enough to lure a real elite.

So would Green, Christensen, Taylor and Zorko buzzing :)

Still, gut says neither Dixon or Rance will be in a Lions jumper in 2016

Gold Coast's dismal year may give us a shot at Dixon but I doubt it. As Mike Whiting said, would be a big priority for the Suns to re-sign, and so we would have to pay big coin for him. We certainly couldnt fit both him and Rance in i dont think

Losing Leuey would free up ~$600k and apparently we are offering Aish over $400K. This on top of the fact we already have heaps of cap space would mean we have the money I think.

Bear in mind that we seem to have underpaid the last couple of years. It has to average out to 100 per cent on a rolling three year basis (if I remember correctly), so we're most likely required to overshoot the cap by a reasonable margin this year.

Its not compulsory but you can bank cap for future years. minimum is 95% every year, there's no secondary minimum over a 3 year period. So you can pay 105% in another year if you've underpaid in either of the two previous years by a combined 5% however you don't have to.

Cheers. I misunderstood that aspect of it.

That said, I guess the point remains that we probably have the option (if not the requirement) of overshooting the cap this year.

yeh fair points all. I didnt think of Leuey potentially leaving. Are GC feeling the heat cap wise? Could they match a 500-600k offer?

The vast majority of our list is under 23. As well as not having to pay Aish (and possibly Leuey) - there is at least $500K between Staker, McGuane and Paine that we won't be paying next year :thumbsu:

And Beams and Christensen both having sliding scale contracts so there should be quite a bit available to use.

Goose too so that will be a little bit more cash on top.

Is Paine actually out of contract this year? I can't recall ever having seen how long we signed him up for but I would have thought it'd be a minimum of 3 years to justify the move, like we did with Lisle. Could be wrong. He's a long way back though and injured again so every chance he's paid out early even if he had another year.

I'm taking from these comments by Hardwick that they are a bit scared of losing Rance.

Yeah....but on the other side...wonder how he'd comment against religion if Rance walks away from football..

Rance and his wife Georgia are Jehovah's Witnesses, a religion embraced by his family after being introduced by Rance's mother Di during the latter days of father Murray's football career. The former Swan Districts, Footscray and West Coast player who captained the Eagles in 1989, Murray Rance told Fairfax Media he had nothing to add to his son's situation except to say: "I just want to be his dad and support him."

The elder Rances, true to their restorationist Christian religion, regularly spend time helping others learn about the Bible and, in the words of the religion's official raison d'etre, God's Kingdom.

Still luvs ya!;)

I probably could've worded my previous post a bit better, but I'd just woken up and still a bit brainless.

If we get Rance and Dixon I'd be rapt.......but I worry about spending that much on two players.

..and I have just read on the HUN that Rance is a Jehovah's Witness. That bothers me. I have worked with two of them, they take every opportunity to speak of or try to convert you.

If there was a firm agreement of "keep it to yourself and don't bother anyone else with it", I'd be fine.

I think.

I think.

Well that aint going to happen.....sort of goes against "preaching" and "advocating" their belief doesn't it?

dlanod what's happened to Curtly Hampton? Is there any major knocks against him that means he's not getting a game at the moment? I thought he was realising a fair bit of his talent over the last few years.

I think he would be worthwhile chasing.

Not necessarily - they are perfectly allowed to work without that work being religious etc - in fact to preach in such a way as to interfere with your or other's work or in a way that annoy the boss etc is against the rules ... now if you are sitting around chatting *after* you have had your training / on your break etc then they are free to chat about what they love to talk about just like anyone else is ...

Conversely if you are meeting them on your doorstep you are more than likely only going to get the more preachy side of them :)

That is a legitimate concern MacMum, however, the club would have the option of heavily front loading both contracts meaning their contracts won't take up much salary cap space from 2017 and beyond.

October is to far away to take anything to seriously at this stage, however, the fact that these players remain unsigned means that there is still a chance they could move at the end of the year and therefore they will be at the centre of rumours and key discussion points though out this year. Signing Dixon and Rance would be a major recruiting coup for the club and could arguably top last years effort(Which is very exciting to think about) due to the fact that KPP's are harder to come by compared to midfielders(Beams, Bundy and Robbo).

A bit too inconsistent compared to the other players who are getting a gig over him. Players like Haynes and Kennedy are a lot more reliable when given a job, and the recruitment of Shaw also limited Hampton's options as GWS have him firmly pegged as a rebounding backman.

Brennan-like is probably the best description - he can do anything and then turn around and prove it, but in a negative way.
