15 for Howe and 25, then 25 for Anderson. Would = Anderson and Howe for our first rounder.

Would people do that given the draft supposedly drops away?

North may or may not be paying Black to play at another club. Four outcomes are possible:
1. North trades Black to another club willing to pick up his salary (perhaps because they think he will improve his performance or because they are giving up less in return)
2. North trade Black and continue to pay part of his salary. Given Black is contracted, I can only imagine the club agreeing to this if they think they are getting a good trade in return
3. Black accepts a lower salary because the opportunity offered by another club (e.g. regular game time, return to WA) is worth more to him than money
4. Given Black is currently getting paid above his performance, no-one may be willing to accept the financial cost of the trade and so Black may stay at Arden Street
Pretty much this.

Black is contracted, so will be paid whatever the terms of that contract are if he is traded (don't know how things like performance bonuses would work if he changed clubs). Who pays what portions of it is entirely up to the two clubs making the trade if he changes clubs. It's not up to him at all.

Effectively constitutes an extra bargaining chip in negotiations; we can insist they pay the full contract and get something less back, or pay some portion of it and get something better back. If we have the cap space I'm all for making the deal that has the best assets coming back our way. For instance, Weller will still be on his $150K entry contract for 2016; if eating some of Black's salary helps make that happen, sign me up.

Agree except that Black himself can also agree to take a lower salary to help him get to the new club.

The fact the draft drops away should make us more keen to keep our first and use the other picks for trade.

1st round picks look to be of a pretty good standard, its after that the field evens out. Would really like to hold on to 15.

That said you have to give to get so we may well have to part with it to land the targets we are aiming for.

An upgrade for Cuz, something semi ok for Blacky and maybe something decent for Basti, if worked well enough, may give us the goods to keep pick 15.

Fingers crossed.

Jetta --> Sinclair & pick
Redden --> pick

that wouldnt leave much from WC to give the hawks would it? unless they have a player wanting to come to vic....

Bombers set to land Lions big man

Brisbane Lions free agent Matthew Leuenberger will be wearing red and black in 2016.

The Age is reporting that the 27-year-old ruckman will make a free agency move to Tullamarine this week, turning his back on interest from the Sydney Swans.

The report suggests the Lions won't match Essendon's three-year offer and will accept a compensation pick for Leuenberger.

Securing Leuenberger would be a major boost for the Dons given their struggles in the ruck last season when No.1 big man Tom Bellchambers was injured after the club lost Paddy Ryder to Port Adelaide in the trade period.

The Bombers had also been interested in Gold Coast's Zac Smith, who appears set to join Geelong, while the Swans could now ramp up their bid for West Coast's Callum Sinclair to replace retired ruckman Mike Pyke.

If we would give up our first round pick for Anderson and Howe, surely the 15 would have to go to Hawthorn, given they don't have to trade Anderson at all?

Wet toast don't get squat for Selwood as he is a RFA, so unless they match the cats offer and do a deal or he is on monster coin and years at the cats their compo won't even be a 2nd rounder under the new rules. Hence people speculating Lewie will only net the lions a 3rd rounder..

oh yeah forgot about duckwood.....so its goung to get messy, for selwood to get to geelong, and then somehow with all the other deals geelong are trying to do, to satisfy WC with a pick, that they can then offload to the hawks.....

Apparently Essendon best placed..

They have lower picks and no-one wants to play there, so of course they are in a better position for trade pick currency. Just have to wait and see if that matters - as discussed, only Caddy recently has given his club the final option.
