No.

Harwood, Bastinac, Bell, MRobbo, McStay, Squizzy, Cutler, Mayes and Clayton. That's nine. Oh well. Keays and Mathieson also since new year, should add.
Great to see Mayes in that group

Draftees Progress

"Josh Schache: Super impressive in his early stages and has not missed a beat. Not only a good runner, but is surprisingly big through his lower body and already looking at home with contested work.
Eric Hipwood: Like his fellow Academy products, has come into the system in good shape. Working hard to put weight on his tall frame, but runs well and has to be held back to save himself from overtraining.
Ben Keays: One of the front-runners in the club's 3km time trials, it has translated to match simulation work where he bobs up everywhere. Is already driving older players to match his intensity.
Rhys Mathieson: Trains with an intensity that is hard to match. Whether it's running or doing skills and contest work, throws his body around even when he appears exhausted. Like Keays, has a very strong body for a teenager.
Sam Skinner: Has a great attitude on his road to recovery from a knee reconstruction. Has worked on strengthening his legs and is slowly increasing his running volume and will commence agility work next week.
Reuben William: Slowly building fitness base after a groin injury pushed the start of his pre-season back. Has a great attitude, shown by completing a voluntary training session at the club on his 18th birthday over the Christmas break. Will join in with skills next week. – Michael Whiting"

Positive stuff - especially Schache , Keays and Mathieson. Also great to hear Skinner progressing well on the rehab trail. :thumbsu:

Saw Matheson go done in a contested drill holding his knee (collision). Got up, no fuss and straight back into it. In stoppages at training he's always at the feet of the ruck as well. He's definately a 'footballer' first rather than an athlete but he's definately got the mindset and tenacity. Look forward to seeing how he goes in the Magoos (as he played TACCup and not against men) and see his development this year. There's a lot to like at this stage. Next Off-Season he should do what Rocky did at the end of his first year with the boxing training.

I think I read somewhere that Rich hurt his foot running on the hard ground back in Perth whilst on his break.

I probably would have thought WA and Qld would have the hardest grounds.
They do most of their training on the grass as a group but it is hard to rack up distance on your own without running on man made surfaces - just too boring. Maybe higher than previous running during time away has just caused a few niggles that will remedy quickly. Please let it be so.

If we hold all these guys for the next 5-10 years this will be seen as the best draft for the club.

I think potentially we could have managed three extraordinary drafts in a row. The evidence isn't all in yet, but this list of names shows signs of having the right stuff:
Taylor, Cutler, Robertson, McStay, Freeman, McGrath, Andrews, Dawson, Schache, Hipwood, Keays, Mathieson.

There are a couple more in the wings as well. But there are 12 players we drafted in the last three years.

It has been excellent drafting and while not all will necessarily make it as far as becoming established at the top level, most of that group will. A few will be even better than that and at least one or two can be among the top players in their positions.

We need footballers over pure athletes, all good being 6 3 and being able to run a hundred in 10sec, if you cant get your hands on the footy it doesnt matter how good an athlete you are. If you have athletic and high football ability well that is when you get a Fyfe or a Bontempelli. Good to see another guy with a bit of mongrel too to add to Robinson who has given as a bit of edge.

There's an argument that suggests that there is a minimum athletic requirement to be a professional footballer, particularly for midfielders. If we take a Rockliff as possessing the bare minimum, I'd suggest Mathieson will eventually get to the point where his athletic traits, while not a strength, will be good enough to survive at senior level.

This sort of thing can't be seen in terms of the extremes - ie the pure athlete with no footballing ability v the pure footballer with no athletic ability. Neither is going to make it in the modern game. All that you can say is that a below average athlete has to be an above average footballer and vice versa.

Surely Diz is included also. I love the mongrel the kid has!!

The key is you need the right mix of in an unders, outsides, and those that can do both. Smart footballers compensate with their footy intellect but you still need the outside weapons to be the benefit of winning the contested ball. Pace, and the ability to deliver effectively and hit the targets by having those players best at it in a position to do it.

Recruiting Bastinac and Bell and recruiting Mathieson and Jansen has added an additional 4 guys to add to the above.

Just adds greater flexibility to the list and as we can all see from the discussions the best 22 is a hell of a lot harder to balance.

Nicely put. If the new additions slot into inside roles and players like McGrath take the spot in HBF - it will release our prime movers like Beams, Rich and Hanley to play the outside and forward of centre role. Quality of our inside 50 deliveries will go up right away.

I must be one of a few who really rates Evans.... i've said it a couple of times, there is something about that kid that excites me. Maybe the slick hands? If he gets more pill the ceiling on that kid goes up exponentially imo

See him as that Jack Crisp type Rookie?

Mathieson is like being a kid and getting that Christmas gift from a relative you hardly ever see. In reality, it may not be as good as some of your other gifts, but the fact it came from nowhere makes it special. I'm pretty pumped about Rhys.
He may, MAY end up being one of the best of that bunch. I know players slide for a reason but still can't believe we got him

What was the knock on him in his draft year? I am a fan too, but not sure why he made it to the rookie draft, seemed to be highly rated IIRC

Evans struggled a bit in the NEAFL but really did well when he got a game at AFL level. It was interesting to see him develop. The one big issue from my perspective was that he looked like he was carrying some extra condition.

From the photos so far this offseason he looks a lot fitter. That could signal good things for him.

Yeah he is definitely a bigger lad at a vit of a Cutler build. Needs cardio work and hopefully will develop like I think he could....

Unfortunately, despite Evans encouraging performances at senior level I think he will find it very hard to get a senior games this year. His NEAFL form was ordinary and probably got his shot due to the injury toll I'd have thought. He'll have to lift his form and consistency at NEAFL level dramatically to have a chance.

Certainly showed signs in the seniors though when given the call up

I thought his most impressive NEAFL performances were when he rotated through the forward line. Didn't he kick 3 goals in a quarter or 2 before he got his call up?

1 month to go until our first preseason game! Can't wait to see all the new guys running around out there

Feels like its really crept up this year.
