The biggest surprise to me was giving Holmes a real gig. Does anyone actually believe he'll ever be our first ruck, unless we are crippled by injury ? Four spots on our list to dedicated rucks is one to many in my view. Especially as most teams are going down the path of only playing one ruckman with pinch hit support. With Hickey a lock and adequate backup in Longer and Pierce why clog our list with another ruckman ? If the prospect of losing three ruckmen to injury at the same time is a worry, why not rookie list a kid as number 4 just in case ? Delisting/trading Holmes and opening his spot up for another mid or defender would've made more sense to me.

Perfect cheap backup.

My only issue is while he is on the list we are not developing a young ruckman who could go past him?

In recent times there seems to be a trend to let other clubs develop them - then trade them in.

I think they were surprised Longer wanted to stay instead of requesting a trade.

Cat B rookies choose thier clubs the next great american project ruck is gonna know if he puts in he'll be rewarded.

On your first question, nope, and on the rest totally agree.

I don't understand the lack of love for Webster . His attack on the ball and the man is first class.
His effort in the dying minutes of a game last season won us the game when he backed in to a contest and got crunched was inspiring to his team mates.
Love him. Has some great traits for mine. Will go past Savage in the long run.

No problem with Holmes, Minch or Wright getting Contracts.

It appears we are building a culture whereby hard work is rewarded.

These guys may never play another senior game, but one message is clear that you'll get a shot if you work your tots off.

If nothing else it keeps more talented players honest.

The days of a walk up start based on talent are gone.

will not be playing afl, gave him the old "didn't think you should have be delisted" speil but his afl career is done

Delaney would've been the first person to tell anyone that he wasn't up to AFL standard (which is harsh, IMO; he played well for us, considering all circumstances).

Surely we could do worse than picking up Schade as a DFA? Even though this is a deep draft, he'd have to be better than what would be available at our 3rd pick, even if not on ability, at least due to his experience meaning he would be more likely to have an impact whilst we're challenging.

No he'll never be first ruck unless he vastly develops his all-round technique...

...and that's OK. I'm sure as a late starter and a level-headed professional, he has a clear understanding of the situation. He is back up ruck, a decent stop gap. That's about as much as he can expect.

We have an elite ruckman (Hickey), a young (21yo) ruck-forward with bags of potential (Pierce) and another solid physical tap ruck specialist (Longer) who could also be said to be developing at age 23. My feeling is we'll keep developing the latter two and depending on how that goes, and how impatient they are, we'll look at trading one of them in 12 months time. Out of our 4 rucks, Jason is the only one whose trade value is unlikely to ever be interesting to us, whereas Billy and Lewy are likely to either fall away and get delisted or increase in value either as trade bait or senior team material.

Meanwhile, Jason gets a back-up gig in a dynamic growing club, one of the rising stars of the comp. He has acquitted himself well the times he's been called on. He's a good clubman, a good story for the media, and will be good for the other international players coming in.

I think we're in no rush for the moment to make a call on any of the 4 unless an outstanding trade offer came in, which it clearly didn't.

I loved Delaney. Will forever r a Sainter.
Tony?

I remember watching Saints years ago when Tony Delaney was playing for us and hearing an extremely agitated older gent in the crowd near me going of his nut at another turnover, referring to him as Ronald ******* McDonald. Looooool

For the last three years he's averaged 15 touches a game. Nowhere near enough. He has really stagnated.

How many possies should a back pocket be averaging?

For starters Leigh Montagna averages 27 playing in the backline.

Savage averaged 20.

Roberton 19-20.

Geary averaged 15 this year but even he got 19 touches a game last year and he's hardly someone we look to get the ball in the hands of.

Some other examples:

Johannison 24.

Murphy 22.

Birchall 22-23.

Basically there's plenty of ball available in the backline but for some reason Jimmy has a hard time finding it.

Never forget him injuring his hip, starting to hobble of the field, when the ball comes in his vicinity, and he lays a massive monster tackle.

That reason may be him bashing into multiple players bigger than him to compensate for our undersized defence.

Webster plays deepish and on dangerous forwards. Those others are just mids behind the ball largely. Given his traits he should get more dangerous, but I think he's playing a role to a degree.

Joey Robbo and savage are the go when coming out of the backline.
Webster seems to be the lock small defender at times. I wouldn't be too worried. I'd rather he do a role and have 15 quality possessions. Compared to joey who does provide some run and carry but is poor defensively and gets a LOT of cheap ball. Oh and Webster craps of the names you mentioned above for hardness toughness tackling and courage. Something you don't see on the stats sheet!!!!
