Good Jk replacement...Local boy..Larke medal...smart/switched on hard working kid...clean cut...i think the 2nd rd picks are for mids and we chased them because we are taking Oscar...might be WC being conservative or might be a great move...if we can nab 3/4 quality mids in the 2nd round...would be a good result. Either way it feels like a defining draft for us...time to get our mojo back.
Dont see him replacing JK. He has a decent reach but is still probably too short to lead a forward line.

Agree 100 %.

After having cashed in some chips to hit this years draft , O'Brien and his team need to nail this draft.

I don't mind our strategy, but with the proviso , that we get a decent haul that addresses our major need MIDFIELD reinforcements.
Im a total draft noob, Ive loved getting into it a lot more this year, plenty of great discussion and knowledge on here from lots of posters (yourself included)....lets get us some A grade mids!!

Sumich’s gave a glowing review (probably as expected) about him doing all the right things, ice baths for recovery, diet, hard work etc.

Allen also says all the right things and comes across really well.

TBH I think he will do well wherever he lands. So might as well be us, even if he doesn’t play a position of current need.

I don't see a role that Allen succeeds at, at afl level.

I don't think he will make it as a mid and he's not such a huge talent that his physical limitations place on him that he'll overcome them as a forward. Best of luck to the kid but i just don't see it and because of that i don't want him on our list. Even if he was to fall to pick 69.

If you don't have a defined role you think a player can excel at, at afl level in mind when you draft them, then don't ****ing draft them.

I'm the same although I could see him being a decent second or third tall forward but its not an area we need with Darling and Waterman looking ok. So that means we have to hope he makes it as a mid and that's a big risk.

I'll remember to quote that in a few seasons ;)

Hunter Clark?
Worst case to my mind is Beau Waters re-incarnate as a HBF. Defined role at afl level. In the second half of the season he's been one of the top 3 performed mids in the TAC cup. So super hard, super agressive, front line ball winner. Perfect.

Charlie Constable?
In tight, ball winner who makes the right decisions. Is not athletically gifted. It is a genuine limitation. However gets a lot of the ball, always seems to be in the right spot and gets quality possessions away and starts goal scoring chains. If he had genuine leg speed he'd be a top 3 pick. Constable has Luke Parker written all over him. Always got the right results, the right possessions, started all the chains. Somehow slides in the draft and then everyone goes HTF did that happen.

Aaron Naughton?
Genuine superstar tall potential. Marks the ball at the highest point, gets big numbers, reads the play exceptionally well, has performed against men (getting better and better the higher the level of competition). Negatives. Is as ugly as a hatful of assholes and has a very ungainly kicking action. Note his kicking hasn't had bad results but his base kicking action is similar to the kids face.

Jack Higgins?
The top performed junior footballer going by champion data numbers...... Wait for it...... Ever. is 178cm and not quick. If he was 5cm taller he would be the number 1 draft pick. Is like Toby Greene except he has better skills and gets even more of the ball. FOR **** SAKE IF HE IS THERE AND WE DON'T DRAFT HIM!!! If you went to any club in the land and asked them would they give up pick 13 for Toby Greene they would be falling over themselves to sign.

Club recruiters all seem to come from the same pool and group think has both it's advantages and disadvantages. They also very distinctly end up in groups where they overthink players, issues and situations.

There are basic rules of recruiting and issues that seem to be lost between scouts, recruiters and coaches. There is a very basic principle which if applied will provide a lot more success than most clubs seem to have. What role will they play at AFL level, how do they end up in that role and how does that role help the club towards a premiership.

Now we could get really lucky or we could completely **** this up. Constable could legitimately slide to 21 on fears of his pace. Higgins could fall to 13 on fears of his height. Yet they'd both look pretty bloody amazing in the same centre square setup. Constable's size covers for Higgins lack of it.

Oscar Allen is a maybe and has some great attributes. However he was absolutely fed in the championships and i don't ever see him producing results as a forward like that at any level ever again. He certainly didnt produce it as a forward prior to the national champs or afterwards. I'm going out big with the call here but i don't see anyway allen becomes a dominant afl level player. To my mind he was the third best performed tall from WA this year (who is also magically only 191.1cm) yet somehow people want to use pick 13 on him.

13 Higgins
21 Constable
26 Kelly
32 Worpel
37 Taylor

Allen doesn't usually pay anywhere near as deep as he did during the champs.

He doesn't and he won't be able to play that deep at afl level either. Unless he makes it as a mid i don't see a role for him at afl level. I'm happy for people to quote me, but i'm not going to get involved in a group circle jerk over a WA player when i don't see a role for them at afl level. He's certainly not leaving anything on the field and has produced some good numbers in specific instances and if he doesn't make it, it won't be for lack of trying. I just don't rate him.

As a matter of fact i would go as far as to say that as a forward, Jake Waterman was and is a better prospect. A prospect who also managed to get more of the ball as a midfielder than Allen as well. If waterman can sort his kicking he is a great prospect as a third tall and we already have him on the list.

He's good overhead, Jumps at the right time and is very good below his knees for a player his size. Runs hard and goes a long way up and back down the ground. Has done reasonably well through the midfield recently however i think a large part of his success is his dominant aerobic capacity. His kicking is also very inconsistent, particularly when under pressure however technically he is a very good kick. The only other thing he seems to be elite at is taking instruction. He follows structures and will lead others into doing the same when required.

He has some really positive traits and has snuck in a couple of higher possession games that i havent got to see first hand in the last part of the season. However i've seen him 7-8 times in person in the last last 2 years and I just don't see a role for him at AFL level. I don't think he'll get enough of the ball against men to make it as a midfielder and he's not tall enough or gifted enough to make up for it as a forward. Also just doesn't kick enough goals. For a guy who mainly plays as a lead up tall forward to only average roughly 1 goal a game at junior level doesn't give me a lot of reassurance that it's going to magically get better at afl level.

Can anyone remember what the media had us picking at pick 14 last year.

I wanted Powell Pepper last year with Venables second but cant remember what the media said. If they predicted Venables, then I might listen a bit more closely to their predictions this year.
There was way less consensus than this year. It fluctuated between Gallucci, Berry, Powell-Pepper, English, some even wondered whether we might reach for Bolton, there was talk of Brodie sliding...

This year there seems to have been a point a week or two ago where it seems Oscar has been pencilled in and most phantoms now seem to have him going to us, but who ****in knows

Does Allen have the tank to play in the midfield?

He wasn't in the top 10 in the 2km or yo yo. Anyone seen Allen's yo-yo or 2km results from the combine.

Dont see him replacing JK. He has a decent reach but is still probably too short to lead a forward line.

I feel the modern forward line needs more mobility then ever before. Also playing two genuine rucks is a thing of the past, now teams play a forward / ruck and only one pure ruck.

So future forward lines are made up of:

Small presure forward 170 - 185cm
Medium forward mid 180 - 190cm
Medium pressure forward 180 - 192cm
Forward / ruck 195 to 200cm
Specialist leading kp forward 190- 195cm
Roaming HFF 185 - 193cm high endurance
A forward on the bench

So in our case post Kennedy and Le cras.

Rioli Waterman Cripps / L Fogarty or Higgins type
Ah chee / Venables Darling Allen

Interchange: Vardy

Rotations - Kelly, Shuey, Sheed, Naitanui.
