Seriously who do i have to **** for an inside/outside quality midfielder? Fremantle just drafted 2 FFS.
Our strategy moving forward should be simple, draft a bunch of players from the Gold Coast, hope one of them turns out to be ok and then trade them back to the Gold Coast for a top 5 pick.

And yet still don't have a single decent KPF on their list to kick it too.

Yeh, Brander isn't a bad pick by any means, just not the way I would have gone considering our needs. I said before the draft that if all the mids are gone I'd be happy taking Brander. I just don't think all the mids were gone.

It's really only something you can tell in hindsight.

If Brander ends up being a premier AFL FF while Bailey/Higgins are competent B+ midfielders then you could call it a success. Hopefully we made the right choice.

Interesting that the majority of players we took have some sort of link to the Club (Brander a huge fan of the Club, and Brayshaw) or are from WA. Petruccelle is the only one who doesn't. Wonder if we were spooked about taking interstaters for some reason?

Thought the same thing

Allen was to good to not be drafted at 21 and i think we assumed it was a reasonable gamble that kelly would stll be there at 26. Was suprised that Geelong took him to be honest as they had already drafted Fogarty and there list is very light on for KPP with Lonergan retired and Hawkins and Taylor not getting any younger

Geelong are annoying AF. They keep drafting mids despite already having plenty of them and needing to top up their KPPs - they'll fall off a KPP cliff soon.

Some people base decisions not just off 3 min youtube clips but from their own viewing.

The crowd of people imploring the club to take Liam Ryan as a rookie last year for instance. Painting anyone with a different opinion as a keyboard warrior who is getting all their information off a highlights package is a pathetic argument.

Is anyone from the club going to come out and put there hand up and explain why we chose Gorter? No?

Could you name these posters that are credible? Because as much as I love you guys you are basically on the same level as the WCE facebook nuffies.

Probably the most respected poster here recruitment wise is Bond 007 who thought the draft was fine.

Anyone heard from AsterixTheGaul or Monocle since last night? Would love to get their perspective on it. Or have I missed it somewhere back in this mega-thread?
In emails and posts, I have a policy of not writing them when angry or when wine effected. Guilty to both last night so I stayed away from the keyboard.

A morning to think on it with a clear head.

What did I think about the draft? In general we did OK but I think we missed a trick. As I said a few times, it will be the balance of the draft that will determine the haul as there was no 1 individual at our pick that would make the draft a killer. People saying our haul is vanilla are fooling themselves. We got great variety and addressed a load for the future. I would probably only want to go and change three out of seven picks in the draft.

Pick 21. Oscar Allen
My view on Allen is that he is a tweener and we are good now and good for the future with Darling and Waterman with a more speculative Matt Allen. I do not believe this midfield hype on Oscar. Yes he has a good tank, sticky hands, good below his knees and yes he is the Lark Medalist. Yes he was probably best available at 21 and yes he will be a decent AFL footballer. It looked to me that Rohan was like a 19 year old with a hard-on. When Allen popped up - he just could not resist grabbing. Fair call if we had of gone small at 13 but given Brander, there were later options for talls and I would have passed.
Who instead: I would have chosen Lochlan Fogarty or Tim Kelly being aware that it was likely Stephen Wells would pounce on the one that we left. I really rate L Fogarty and think this will be a long term regret.

Pick 32. Branden Ainsworth
Let's be clear - he is an overage player and was eligible for the 2016 draft. He failed to make a single league game at Subi last year (and yes I am aware Subi had a strong team). Did he dominate Ressies? No. He was good at colts level but most overage players have that advantage. His kicking is a major flaw in his game and whilst I really like the way he gets involved, this was a massive reach and I think there was a chance he would have been there at 69.
Who instead: James Worpel or Dylan Moore.

Pick 83: We passed. This perplexes me as it says there was nobody worth giving a 2 year contract to at this level.
Who instead: Bailey Banfield is the same cohort year as Ainsworth and was B&F at Claremont and I expect him to be about as successful as Branden. Keys, Monocle and I have been banging on about him for 15 months so probably no surprise on his call.

So I liked the picks of Brander, Ryan, Petruccelle and Brayshaw. Loads of good things have been stated on each of these so I will avoid repetition. Could we have delayed Ryan and gone Spargo at 26 and Ryan at 32? Possibly but that is fine tuning and speculative. With taking who went after our pick and making a 2 player changes and making a decision when we passed, I would have preferred the following and this would have made me very happy.

I am most mystified on the Allen selection. Four reasons I can think as to why him. 1. He becomes a new age mid and I am going to have to eat humble pie for a few years.2. Waterman is not valued which is odd because the club stated he was close to being picked at the end of this season. 3. We are not stating it but this will be a deeper rebuild than many of us expected. 4. We are so wedded to the best available theory that it impaired our portfolio decision.

I did think up a fifth reason in Duggan, Cole, Mutimer, Nelson, Karpany and Partington all about to dominate the midfield in 2018 but I quickly dismissed it.

Given the likelihood of more of a rebuild being on the cards, then I would not go for Schloithe as a rookie. I would go Banfield, Redhead and Farrant or similar. We should reserve at least 2 spots in the rookie draft each year for players that have part of their game in order but would offer a massive upside if they get the other parts fixed in an AFL professional set up.

Was initially a little disappointed but putting yourself in the minds of our recruiters on the night you can kind of guess how it played out

13 - We need a Kennedy replacement, talls that are B- grade or under kill their sides (think Freo), if you want a B+ KPF or higher you have to pay for him. Plenty of good mids left later. Toss up between Brander and Allen, go with Brander

21 - Holy shit Allen's still here, he's too good to pass up let's hope Kelly is there at 26 otherwise our draft balance will be thrown off

26- **** Geelong ok ok we're not missing both Kelly and Ryan and he's the kind of player Carlton and Melbourne who have picks before 32 would be after, we need an Ainsworth Constable or Worpel type and one of those will definitely still be at 32 so let's go Ryan here.

32 - All three of those mids are still here, we need an inside mid and we'll pick the one we rate most - Ainsworth (I personally might have gone Constable but it'll be interesting to compare them as they go)

38- Constables gone, we like Worpel but he's very similar to Ainsworth in how we intend to develop him, let's go for pace on the wings - Pettruccelle

68- **** yeah Brayshaw is still here too good to pass up.

So in total I think all very justifiable decisions that were perhaps thrown off a bit by the way the night panned out, I'm sad we missed out on Garlett (betting we were gambling on him making it to the rookie draft) and with Category A rookies able to play senior games now whenever is there really any point not filling our list of 40? That was the only thing I'm annoyed about in hindsight, the rest I think made sense the way we played it out.

Carlton taking Garlett in the main draft is supremely stupid IMO. Rookie to a West Australian side or GTFO

He's quite small so there's questions over whether he'll make it as an AFL mid

Yep all the quality well rounded mids were all taken before our first pick. Basically picking up 2nd string mid prospects or quality tall prospects (which were around because other teams went mid heavy).

Club did decent considering the situation. We are not shit enough like Freo to crawl along the bottom of the ladder and lose quality young players for draft picks.

Monocle for a start, Asterix for another.

I think Higgins will end up being a very good player. Wouldn't surprise me if he was a regular in the Richmond team by the end of the year.

Hard to place my feelings with last nights draft. Given where a lot of supposed "top 30" picks slipped to, I don't see where we have benefited from trading away our first round pick for next year? Obviously the Eagles rated brander higher than Allan, and didn't expect him to still be on the board at 21, which was probably the pick for Kelly. So, you would question if Higgin's would of ended up being our pick 13, if they knew OA was going to end up theirs as well. Anyways, Rookie draft to go, and the combination of Banfield, England and potentially Schloithe will go a long way to ease my worries.
