Both teams in their successful eras has some out and out superstars.

Voss, Black, Akermanis were no Charmans/ Hadleys/ Caracellas

Very good players elevate your not so good players. This is a big reason why Premiership Teams can fall off cliffs. Their stars fade and then their average players get exposed.

St Kilda lacks guns at present.

This is so spot on. If anyone seriously doubts this just look at the form of Shiels Smith and others from hawthorn now they've lost 2 stars and the others have dipped in form. Completely different players and it's now a side that's been belted 4 or 5 times in half a season.

Or just have a look at geelong when dangerwood star vs when those two are shut down (vs Collingwood this year the big one).

Get a few elite players and the rest rise with them.

Hitting draft with two top picks isn't a bad alternative, but landing jelly would be an enormous statement and would dramatically improve the club imo

Andy Maher saying on SEN he knows of an offer to Martin for 1.6 a year. Didnt catch the whole conversation.
Earlier Wallace talked about the million in TPP and the two picks from the Saints would be great for GWS.
Said that they would target ne t years first as 2018 is full of talls.

Hmmmmm.....

Firstly is it fact we would lose these players if we paid that much and is it fact we are going to pay that much or it emotive to make others think you are right. I'm guessing we wont pay that much and we wont lose anyone so lets deal.
Thank you.

TPP has been managed specifically for such a scenario and that doesn't take the new CBA into account.

Why is every FA a ridiculous fantasy without giving up picks? I would suggest most FA will cost nothing and that's why they are called FA.

Yes is the are FA.

Problem is that the players that we really need that will make a difference are Restricted FA's. That means their existing club can match the deal.

ie Tigers will match any deal put to Martin unless it is crippling.

There are some RFA's who are lesser lights and who would be handy and whose club would most likely not match any offers. But for RFA's that can make a great difference you would need say Freo or the Tigers to finish near bottom to make the puck compo at least reasonable to maybe tempt the clubs not match.

However for a club like the Tigers they simply cannot afford to lose Martin. The RFA offer would have to be way over the top for them not to match IMO.

1.6M Wowser!!!

IMO our 3 x 1st rounders are worth a lot to GWS and match their need to manage TPP by letting some go and drafting cheap quality kids.

Kelly and Whitfield for the 3 x 1sts is not out of the question imo. We are in a great position to work a better deal with GWS if we come up with a way to ease their salary cap issues a bit.

Trade a fringe out and take a pick around 20 to draft. Upgrade NOK and Marshall.

When are we in our premiership window?
Currently our existing team will look nothing like what we will roll out in 2020 .
My opinion but i reckon we need 2-3 defenders , 2 midfielders, 2 forwards with three draft/ trade periods before the start of 2020 season .

The flaw in your thinking is that if you do it all only via the draft that most will be too young to make any real difference in 2020 in terms of winning a flag.

The club is meant to be aiming at 2020. That to me means that if they do not land some ready to play guns (which is what their plan included), that their long-term plan will have failed.

Club was looking at 2018-2022.

Dont know where this 2020 came from.

The aim was:

The strategic vision outlined a number of key objectives to be achieved by 2018, but one aim, which has a slightly longer timeframe, aspires to win a premiership by 2020.

“And if we are going to be a contender,” Summers preached, “we may as well plan to win the bloody thing!

Naturally they would not be aiming at only being good enough in one year. But to win by 2020, means that you have to be getting the team good enough to win real soon, and given what we now have that will not be achieved bu only adding kids.

And so hence my point that the club needs more than just kids in the draft IF it is going to achieve its plan.

Someone on the MB who barracks for GWS made a good point that nobody has really tagged Kelly yet, so it's hard to say how he would go if he started to get tagged every week in a team that doesn't have a midfield as stacked with talent as GWS does.
Would a team tag Kelly and Steven?

Dont think so.

I agree but the comment was a RFA is no more than an uncontracted player. That's clearly not the case as they have all been given away for nothing. I know some had backroom deals that stopped the matching but there are plenty who will go for nothing to the club they want to go to. Martin and Fyfe will stay IMO so matching wont matter.

I don't either (except for North, they like to tag and have both Jacobs and Dumont), but I would still ideally like to know how he would handle it before I upped my offer by a mil or two though.

If they tag him and tag Steven he is still worth heaps. Its a team game so as long as one is off the rope its fine.

Why is it a flaw ?
Im opinion is we need to fill holes in our existing team . And those holes wont all be filled by guns ...the salary cap stops this unfortunately. If we do pay big money now who' s contract in 2018/19 will it effect ?
If we use 2 x 1st rounders now are those gaps going to be filled by poor skilled players to weaken our attempt for glory .
We have been there done that 2009 and 2010.

You are writing as if you know more than our List managers. They would know everything you mentioned and probably triple because they know wages for a start. They would also know the quality coming through as well.
