could actually be a really good replacement for Roo, I really wouldn't mind Tomlinson for pick 8.

Would bargain a bit more tho, see if we can turn 8 into a later first round and a 2nd round pick just so we can pick 1 top 10 kid, and another kid who might fall through to a later pick
I wouldn't hate using 8 on Tomlinson either but i still think its a little too much. Only established himself this year and had a little way to go yet, i think he's closer to being worth 15ish give or take. Would be nice to have a mid-late second coming back to make it more palatable. Both the physical trade and this forums reaction to it.

Terry Wallace (who despite the knockers, is a pretty solid judge in this area) says that pick 1 this year is around pick 6 next year. This supports your comment
Until the players next year aren't as good as first thought, which is exactly what was said last year about this year

Tomlinson really impressed me in that last final of theirs. Would love to get him in. Seems like a dependable kind of character too (as opposed to Watts and a few others). Pick 8 with a bit of something back would be OK with me.
Talia...I don't know much about him (other than maybe not being the most dependable of characters). If he's a good defender and we can allow him to kick the ball out of the backline it would be nice. I'd like to replace Brown with somebody at some stage. Brown's giving it off by hand all the time thing is a frustrating handicap. It was nice to have him back there this year defending, but hopefully a stop-gap option that will end sooner rather than later. My hopes aren't high from Hugh at this point. Just haven't seen enough to know what the best case scenario could be with him. Paddy at least has clunked a few marks, shown a bit of mongrel and bravery. Hugh hasn't had much of a run at it, but the little I've seen was kind of meh. Early days though, hopefully he has some luck next year.

I swear I read that every year.

"This draft is weak, but the next one is a super draft."
That's what we said last year. We were all sweet because this year was stacked with gun KPPs & we'd get top end mids make it to our picks.... Fast forward 10 months & it's like, hmmmm, this draft looks poor & we should trade into next year...

It's the same as banking on a player coming next year through trade. Get them when you can

I dont understand why we would use pick 8 on Tomlinson when we desperately need an elite midfielder. By giving pick 8 for him we are drastically reducing what we have to entice clubs to release a player from their contract. And dont say we will just draft a midfielder with pick 7 because we need an elite, classy and imposing one who is ready to go from rd 1.

Unfortunately, this year the first parts true...

So are you saying that there are no potential stars in the first ten picks?
( genuine question bc I'm not up on the draftees.)

Problem is they're right. Either this draft is really shite or the next crop is amazing.

I've seen it with my own eyes with some of the 17 year told talent that was running rings around 18 and 19 year olds

Check out hill from WA. The kid is an absolute gun

There’s always a couple of potential stars, and always a couple where we look back and wonder how we missed them, but overall the quality just isn’t there, and it’s shallow as a wading pool IMO.

Nothing from WA is ever good. Ever.

Very unfortunate timing then when we have such a strong draft hand and it appears most of the targets we (on BF anyway) wanted are not available.
Just have to trust that Ameet and co do the very best they can.

There’s quality there, but some of it - ie Bonar - involves a gamble.

3rd Round picks etc are going to be basically worthless, so trade scenarios involving later picks as important elements are utterly fanciful IMO.

Im mates with Lachlan Fogerty (draft range around 18-28) and he said the saints had a meeting with him. Is this just general analysis or could the saints be looking at bringing in Fogerty if they trade out 7/8 for Tomlinson and get a second rounder back??. he's a gun but his height is limiting but every game he plays he kills it
Ethan Phillips, key back for Oakleigh also had a meeting and I'm wondering anyones thoughts on him.
Hi Lachlan. Welcome.

You obviously haven't had a bush chook. God I so need to post you one. Then you live stream your taste test of it and your first thoughts of it.
That sounds insanely creepy; sounds like ‘bush chook’ is what you call your appendage.

Oh god, is it?! Please don’t mail it to me.

I would imagine the club would want to cover all bases just in case via some deal we end up with a second rounder this year.

Totally agree. Particularly on Weller. I was there at the prelim and was willing to offer up anyone with some sack to them (for a hefty value) then realised those same campaigners are actually very valuable.
My view
1/ Weller is a good solid player
2/ He will be lucky to be in our best 22
3/ We will have a excess of players to fill the role he plays - and we will have better options than what he brings to the table
4/ If he battles to get a game next year his value will be gone
5/ Balic is 20yr was taken with pick 38 in the draft , first year didn't play due to a wrist injury , played in the WAFL and showed his class in the few games he did play , played 4 games this year for Fremantle - best game against West Coast where he picked up 19 disposals and a goal - good kick and has a lot of upside - missed most of the season due to problems at home in Victoria
6/ I'd rather roll the dice and take a gamble on the kid

Who then? Because none of the elite midfielders are moving. Kelly didn't move Dusty didn't move West Coast have ruled out Gaff Adelaide ruled out Sloan and Ameet ruled out Sheil, i assume because GWS won't move him or he doesn't want to move.

You can say we should be targeting elite mids all you want but if there aren't any on the market then there aren't any on the market. We have other needs that Tomlinson or Haynes would be suitors for and we'd be stupid to overlook them in pursuit of a player that doesn't exist.

I suppose Bonar could possibly be worth the risk if we actually keep 7 to draft more of a "sure thing."
From what I've been reading and hearing about him today it would be speculative, but boy what a reward if it came off.
