2018 AFLW Season - offseason moves

Yep, mathematically, the accumulating reprimands rule is more than twice as harsh on the men compared to the women.

You could of course argue that 1 week suspension out of 7 is harsher than 1 out of 22 but there is no real sensible way around that unless you suspend women players for fractions of games.

I don't know if that's strictly true. She got suspended because she had two misdemeanours, whereas in the men's comp it takes three. Arguably it's less stricter than the men's (2 strikes for 7 games versus 3 for 22).
Apparently it's changed. Rules now are, no accumulation of offences that attract fines can result in suspension. The fines just keep going up. So it's different to women's where it becomes a suspension on a second offence.

Haven't logged in here for a while so a bit late with this comment but I'm super pumped that the girls are into the big dance! Can't wait to get down and watch them win our first AFLW premiership. I think after losing last year and having to wait on a few results to fall our way last weekend the girls will be fired up and roll the Doggies with ease! SFT to dominate and get BOG. Then off to Etihad to watch the men kick off season 2018. Going to be a great Saturday!

Fully expecting the AFL to let Brennan off on the appeal, but it won't make a difference!

I thought this was over?

I kind of assumed that was coming. No reason not to... though it seems really unlikely for her to get off at this stage given the criteria required to reverse it.

If that's the case for this year's men's comp we might see a change come through for next year's AFLW. AFLW seems to lag by a year.

The final appeal is almost always fruitless given that your only avenue is to demonstrate that the previous Tribunal were utterly nonsensical in their reasons for reaching a decision. Seemed like the decisions made by the tribunal last night were well reasoned.

And especially leading into a Grand Final it upsets preparations ie Dunkan 1996, Rocca 2003, Cloke 2002 to name a few

Hear they are appealing because it should be treated the same as the mens, but I have a couple of issues with this:

1: AFLW 7 to 8 Games, AFL 22 to 26, you make it three strikes then you might as well legalise the sling tackle in the Womans because the season is not long enough to ever challenge the 3 strikes.

2: She knew the rules when she tackled her, if she got caught again it was a week, you cant change a rule post event.

3: Whatley saying they could legally challenge it because of the different rules, how? Rules was in place, perhaps they should play a 22 round season, with 18 players on the field, its a different game, the rules a re going to be different.

Is it a sling tackle, thats a different debate, but the arguments the Bulldogs are putting forward are bad.

Dog's counsel - If Brennan were playing in the men's competition, her two rough conduct charges would result only in a fine.
Appeals Board - Why don't you start with your strongest submissions?

I hope people don't take this as a reflection on Brennan who knew she did wrong and knew she was unlikely to have it overturned. I think her comments through it have been quite classy.

The Bulldogs on the other hand...

Iiiiiiiinteresting. Trying the gender-based discrimination argument. It's the AFL - I wouldn't be surprised if it works.

2 offences in 9 is a lower probability than 3 in 22, but it's still a tough one. Two is a very steep curve. You could go years without an incident and just be unlucky in timing to get two in quick succession. Getting the second in the last week of the season is extra unlucky. I'm sure Mitchell Moses hasn't had that many sinbins in his professional career. Two in two weeks.

I still stay at the suspension being a miscarriage of justice. Best teams should play grand final day barring something quite severe - something careless and low impact is awfully harsh to ban from the GF on. If they moved it to R1 of 2018/9 season it'd be much fairer.

Maybe this is a glimpse of the new order in AFL tribunal...

Agree with this....just might see some no nonsense decisions this year. A sling tackle is a sling tackle....out! Etc etc.

The debate on the radio over this issue has been sickening.....she got what she deserved. Last year was last year, new tribunal this year.

Yeah....haven't they being ramping it up on SEN !

"miscarriage of justice, mutter, mutter, too harsh, mumble , she's fantastic person, boo hoo, captain of a foundation club, *sob*.

And the most illogical one of all....."unfair to women 'cos if she was a man she'd only get a fine"

.....and if my auntie had balls she'd by my uncle.

Assumably the girls all know the rules of the comp.

If you don't wan't to miss a GF, don't do dumb suspendable shit the week before.

All this palaver between number of games, fines etc will play itself out over the next few seasons.

Once the season extends, the gender aspect of it dissipates and the 1 man tribunal one way or the other is sorted it will be fine.

The main issue is that Brennan appears to be a female Lockett so stuff her.

Just hope the dogs don't make a martyr out of her.
