2018 AFLW Season - offseason moves

It is interesting that Fremantle, GWS and the Crows haven't lost anyone yet.
Not sure about GWS, but Freo and Crows mostly have local players. Crows only have 1 Vic player and that's Perkins, who had a terrible second season. Marinoff has been the only Crow (that we know of) approached and she declined the Vic offer. Randall is from WA, Phillips has already signaled intentions to stay and Cramey is probably the only other star worth chasing on our list, but she's in the older age bracket.

I only came on this thread because I cannot believe Ashmore is leaving Brisbane. Probably not surprising as she's a Vic; and to lose 4 players, that's harsh. At least you guys still have Woosha and McCarthy.

We've got mostly local players too but that didn't stop us losing 2 qlders. Clearly North have targetted getting groups of players from certain clubs to get a team to gel quickly. It's a bit annoying that they can take 4 from one club but none from another though. Will be far worse for us when gc come in

I think people are underestimating the quality coming through.
I think Ruby Blair is as good as Conway, and a couple of the other teenagers are good enough. Good youngsters coming in as well.
Brisbane's eveneness means I don't think you will struggle as much as some of the other clubs.
It isn't how good the players you lose are that's the issue, it's how good they are relative to their replacements, and I think yours will be pretty good.

Yup, certainly will. I'm glad Port Adelaide aren't interested in a women's team.

On Wednesday, North Melbourne signed three open-aged players: Elisha King, Georgia Nanscawenand Ashleigh Riddell.

King, 18, is from North Cairns and was an under-18 All-Australian winger. Swan Districts' Nanscawen is a former Hockeyroo, while midfielder Riddell is captain of VFLW side Melbourne University.

Foundation clubs that lost players to the Roos and Cats have also been allocated compensation picks for the draft, likely to be held in mid-October.

Collingwood will pick at the start of the second round, Western Bulldogs at the start of the third round, Melbourne at the start of the fourth round, and Carlton at the start of the fifth round. Brisbane has been allocated two extra spots for its rookie list, while Greater Western Sydney has been given one extra rookie spot.

So no extra picks only 2 extra rookie spots? Hows this work? We now have 2 extra list spots than everyone else (1 more than GWS)?

So has anyone noticed the Woosha live on the LionsAFLW Instagram account? I am wondering if she will be our marquee to replace Kashy?

High draft picks don't mean anything to us as it's a state-based draft, extra list spaces are actually vaguely useful.

Still seems our compensation for losing 4 quality players is an AFL shit sandwich.
What compensation would be suitable.

They can't make girls leave other states who don't want to leave.

When is the free agent and trade period? Weren't all our girls out of contract at the end of the first season. We potentially could still lose more girls yet.

The Brisbane Lions AFLW side will be bolstered by the leadership and experience of Carlton’s inaugural captain Lauren Arnell, after the midfielder signed with the Club for the 2019 season today.

Arnell comes to the Club after the Lions traded Nicole Hildebrand to Collingwood for pick 40 at the forthcoming AFLW Draft. They then exchanged pick 40 to Carlton for Arnell.

The 31-year-old was at the forefront of the inaugural women’s league and helped Carlton place their bid for a women’s team licence.

Before AFLW, she won eight VFLW premierships with the Darebin Falcons and has been named as an All Australian three times.

In 2017 Arnell played all seven games for Carlton and this year played four matches.

She balances her football career while working as an Education and Training Manager at AFL Victoria and is a member of the AFLPA Women’s Advisory Committee.

Brisbane Lions Women’s CEO Breanna Brock is thrilled a woman with such a distinguished resume is joining the Lions.

“Lauren will provide great mentoring for our young group and new players coming on to the list,” Brock said.

“She’s an outstanding person and has done so much for the women’s game. We look forward to working with such an experienced campaigner and can’t wait to see her pull on the Lions colours.”

Arnell is expected to visit the Lions' training facilities this week and meet the rest of the playing group.
