Im led to believe the plan was go to the draft 3 years in a row then go mature players so they are sticking to the plan ? .
Also its not as if we havent been bringing in talent via trade along the way just not all great talent .
Imo i think their would be a fair case to say that some of our players are already getting overpayed just to meet the salary cap base .
Can still draft in 1st round then use 2 2nds to trade.

Hitting the draft means drafting 5-6 players each year. Which we have done.

Dylan Shiel is probably not worth what Collingwood paid for Treloar (picks 7, 7 and 65), but you'd have to think that he would be worth a top 10 and maybe a second rounder.

I haven't done the points but I reckon this deal would come up a bit short for GWS or one of the other parties.

Short if it was 1 for 9 & Shiel as has been thrown around, or worse from what I have seen

This way they get pick 1 and a pick around 5-8 next year, give up a 3rd rounder for 2 extra 2nd rounders.

Would still need some tweaking

Be surprised if we win a game so every chance we get pick 1

We have to be outright favourites to finish dead last at this point. Didn't Brissie hang about 8 first quarter goals on us last time we played them up there? Zorko went bezerk.

It's not locked in, there are usually some unexpected results in the last ~5 rounds as teams pack up and go home for the year or are resting key guys for finals, etc. But best case dream scenario is we win about 2 more, and that might send us shooting up to such heady heights as 17th or so. :(

Our draw IS a bit softer from here on in, though. We got pounded in the first half of the year.

Next year is the best draft in the past 5 years and we want to give 3 picks for one player. Sounds like a short term fix which could consign us to spending many more years at the bottom.

Hopefully we just win enough games to get pick 2. Draft Walsh and pick up a couple of B-grade either as free agents or trade our 2nd rounders. Need to keep our first rounder this year but would be open to trading next years first if required to get decent player

Agree that 1 for 9 and Shiel is dreaming.

Just wait 12 months and get Shiel through FA. Whatever they have to pay for him this year is too much for what would amount to 12 months service.

Doubt GWS would be able to match some of the offers that would be tabled. If they did, they would have to cut other players
Yeah I have a feeling that's what will happen to them anyway - one or two others wanting out etc. Plus with the increases to salary caps, they'd have to be in a REALLY shit position to not match a good offer to Sheil. I also wonder whether we would be prepared to put huge dollars on the offer too. SOS seems to be one for smart management of the layer payments and would avoid paying Tom Boyd type situations where a player is earning almost double the next highest paid.

I have never understood this, why would you want to weaken your new clubs chance of success by ensuring they give away picks to compensate fairly for your loss. US sports would laugh at this, you wont see Lebron demanding Cleveland get looked after when he leaves.

The other thing that annoys me about AFL is that we are so reluctant to use the preseason draft, because its not the polite thing to do.. F@rk it, we finish last thats the one advantage we have... why wouldnt we tell Gaff, Dalhouse or who ever is the best uncontracted player to not sign and go into the pre season draft, it would be worth an extra $200k to his salary if we didnt have to give up anything for them.

TBF, that's a terrible example. LeBron only cares about what is best for LeBron.

I agree but the ball will never get down their end of the ground
This isn't the last offseason that we can bring in players. If we take Lukosius at 1 than over the next three off seasons we still have 4 second rounders two first rounders and future picks to trade or draft midfielders. That's not even counting our 10 plus later picks we will take in the draft, plus rookies, plus possible FA's

GWS should be in good TPP standing after giving up on paying Devon Smith what he worth. That was probably last good player squeezed out with them getting into line with all other clubs on list size and salary cap. Actually Wilson was the other one whom went West.

I’m pretty confident that if Brisbane have pick 1, they will go with Walsh. He’s a mad Brisbane supporter (yes, they apparently exist) and there’s no way they pass up the opportunity to add an elite talent who actually wants to be there.

I also wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Adelaide swinging for the fences. Best crop of South Australians for years, they have plenty of draft capital up their sleeve... why not.

What about Cripps, Kennedy, Dow, sps, o brien, Fisher, 2019 top 10 pick and a 2019 free agent?

How would you feel about that round 1 2020 after getting some years into Charlie, mckay, Lukosius, Weitering, Marchbank and macreadie?

Brisbane can't afford to ignore talls, especially with talls this good. I don't think it's so cut and dry, particularly if Walsh continues to show up poorly as a power athlete.

As for Adelaide, I wouldn't get out of bed for less than 8, 13, 19 and their future 2nd rounder, and I'd want a suitor to turn 8 back into a top 5 pick.

It's very unlikely we get pick one - check out the draws as follows
Brisbane have- Freo, Us, Hawks, Crows, Cats, North, Pies, Suns, Eagles
We have - Port, Lions, Saints, Hawks, Sun, Giants, Freo, Doggies, Crows.
If we want pick one, we best be lining up against Lions with Crippa, Fish, Dow, Charlie, SPS, Simmo, all out with of the Flu or Gastro that week.

Agree though depends on injuries...if we keep adding to the list we will prob finish last.

If we can actually keep our guys on the park and inject guys like Pickett, Murphy, marchbank and byrne we should finish above Brisbane.

Plowman out doesn't help...may mean we see more of oshea

Could very well be the game that decides the spoon.

We have a shocking percentage...lose to Brisbane and we will need to win two games more than them for the rest of the season to finish above them which would be unlikely.
They way i see it. If we lose to both brisbane and the saints, its all over. Think we will steal a win somewhere, but i also think both of them will also.

Yes it would . Kennedy showed us what he is capable of , Cripps was magnificent and Dow really came on against the filth . SPS and LOB gaining experience and getting stronger on the outside . Continuity and what we get in trades to complement our needs.

How much weight do Brisbane actually place on this, post Shache?
