I think Hodge is a rare character, listening to him commentate you can see his deep understanding of the game and strategies deployed. That coupled with his leadership and professionalism he make a great role model and leader. The perfect pick up. I'm for bringing in older player like that to have around the kids. Roughead seems to be similar, given his comebacks and struggles with cancer and seems a slid leader who could teach the young forwards. Never heard him speak on the game so not sure on his strategy or if he is the sort of motivational bloke that get young player going when they drop their heads.

Cyril would be a great pick up as a player if he wanted to play outside the fish bowl and be left alone but I don't think other than his playing skills he would offer leadership and coaching. Seems like a bloke that just wants to be left alone. I guess forwards being a bit more flamboyant don't really fit the leadership role unless your Jonathon Brown. Jack Reiwoldt when his time comes is inspirational and professional but not been in the Richmond leadership group. GWS recruited Steve Johnson late in his career and now he is an assistant at the Swans. Who else is there we could get probably a year out of tho play the Hodge role in the forwards when needed.

Cyril won't come out of retirement for a year tops, his dad is very important to him.

Roughead (I'm pretty sure) still has a year at the Hawks, and even then we don't need another mentor on the field. Hipwood just needs to become more accurate, Cameron needs to not get injured and the coaches need to decide what they're doing with McStay as they need to let him do the forward thing for a while or go back to being a backman. We don't necessarily need that kind of player in our forward half, or any more on field mentors, we just need to miss less and improve the midfield.

We need another big forward . To take the pressure of hipwood and mcstay .

Also takes pressure off the opposition rebounding defenders... the game has changed.

2 talls and the occasional resting ruckman is plenty.

We have players who can fill that role on an adhoc basis during a game. Most forward lines are 1-2 talls max nowadays
Yep, Daniel McStay turns 24 next season, it's nearly time for a breakout season, he needs to build on this year and be that bail out kick up the line guy who takes the big contested mark ah la Mason Cox:) from last night. IMO we already have the makings of a very dangerous forward 50 lineup, I like the 2 tall, 1 3rd tall + 3 smalls model. I still think going in with the 2 rucks in Martin and McInerney is too tall and we are found out at ground level and covering the rebound.

Charlie Cameron, Daniel McStay, Lincoln McCarthy.
Cameron Rayner, Eric Hipwood, Zac Bailey/Cedric Cox/Lewy Taylor.

I think we have enough big forwards. The problem is guys like Christensen & Taylor need to kick more goals in order to take the pressure off McStay and Hipwood.

If you analyse Collingwoods forward line they had their medium to small size players Thomas (38), Hoskin-Elliot (41), Stephenson (36) and De Goey (45) contributing evenly to their forward line. Compared that to ours we probably need Christensen (16) and Taylor (21) to double their goal kicking tally. The reason they weren't able to do so is because we had to rotate those two players through the midfield.

I reckon we can match Collingwoods forward line output by first addressing our midfield needs. Collingwood addressed this issue couple years ago when they recruited Adams and Treloar. Hence they had enough depth in the midfield to play all those players forward. Neale + another midfield A grader in the 22-25 age bracket should be top off our shopping list in the next 2 years.

If we get a couple of mature A grade midfield talent into our club that would help our inside 50 count total. Currently we ranked bottom 4 for these stat. If we manage to get it to where all the top 4 teams are then Christensen and Taylor might be able to do it. I would certainly would like to give them the opportunity.

If they can't roughly double their output then they can't play those roles. Christensen might need to play as a small rebounding defender, to which Sydney use Lyod as and Taylor might need to be traded out for a player who can kick 30-40 odd goals every season. I confident Rayner and Cameron can kick 30 to 40 odd goals.

We honesty aren't that far off from being a top 8 team. We just need to address our midfield and forward line scoring output like Collingwood did.

Also could be advantageous to offer Robert Harvey, magpie midfield coach, a change of scenery to boost our mids.
