Great that Bell got the trades done.Looks like you paid fair prices for everything and kept some first round picks.

Melb based media (including AFL) need to take a look at their performance during this trade period. Appallingly parochial the whole time, Sam McClure basically call Peter Bell an idiot but praising SOS and others for identical negotiation techniques.

On October 12, Fremantle announced they had pulled out of the race for Jesse Hogan.

"We have been undertaking a due diligence process as part of a possible trade to secure Jesse Hogan," head of football Peter Bell said.

"As part of that process, we have had discussions with Jesse, the player's management and Melbourne.

"While discussions were proceeding, it became clear that what Melbourne would be seeking for a trade would not be possible for our club to meet.

"As such, we have informed Melbourne and Jesse's management that we will not be continuing further with the due diligence process."

Well, they did continue.

The Dockers ended up accepting the deal that Melbourne would have done anyway (picks six and 23).

Bell will argue that they ended up getting the best deal for Fremantle, but it's now unlikely that they'll be able to bluff another club anytime soon."

What a dickhead.

We are used to Melbourne media beating up on our club. Words are wind.

I have to say that some of the afl journo are some of the most childish, conceited little pr*#ks you will ever meet.

So you definitively know it was pick 6 and 23 originally do you? Just remember all the other shit that the media has posted as gospel which has been bullshit. Big call to go with calling Bell a dickhead when you don't know what the actual offer was.

He is calling McClure a dickhead there, for the reasons you outline.

He was calling McClure a dickhead. I know its a redundant statement but I don't think anyone minds.

I think our pulling out of negotiations was more about the length of Hogan's contract, then 5 and 23 anyway. If you believe the talk, we managed to halve the length.

McClure is an absolute knob head, how was the original deal Melbourne would have accepted been 6 & 23 when we used 6 to get 23?

McCarthy is a third tall. Now he'll get to play as a third tall.
He'll be playing as the fourth tall if we squeeze Hogan, Tabs, and Lobb into a traditional looking forward line.

Only problem is it's going to be very tall and slow. The small we have in there are going to have to do some serious work in keeping the ball locked in or its going to be bouncing out real quick if we can't mark it. One thing though, I think Ross is absolutely on the money here with his list design/game strategy. A lot of clubs are going a lot shorter down back to focus on distribution from the back. This is a forward line that can rotate with endurance running and serious contested marking, with Fyfe to rest up there when needed too. It's the opposite strategy that we've focused on for a while - small forward line built for mobility, forward pressure and helping the midfield up the ground - but I think this is good direction to head in.

First time since Modra that we could expect to win a forward line "shootout" game if we open the game up in the middle.
