Paine is the worst tactical captain I have ever seen
I reckon most new captains are the same, great captains seem to emerge when there's no pressure on their position, new skippers just try and 'not screw up to badly', probably a confidence thing, Paine must know he needs to do something outside the box to keep his job though, and he ain't doing it.

Do you honestly think this is our best 11?

I'd replace Bancroft with Harris. Harris has more ticker for an Ashes series.

I'd replace Paine with either Wade or Carey and reinstate Smith as captain. Paine's no good..

I'd replace Siddle and Pattinson with Starc and Hazelwood.

There's 4 changes i think would make a huge difference. And I would have had Kurtis Patterson in the squad too. He'd be back uo to Wade in case he failed this test(which so far he has). Patterson has some ticker about him too, but we just pick flaky batsman who crumble under pressure. Need some heart for an Ashes series. Oh, and a swing bowler!!!

Who cares about averages. Carey's a fighter. He's made for an Ashes series. Harris has more ticker than Bancroft who looked completely lost and was dealing with the ban issues still. Starc is a no brainer. Was the best bowler at the WC and is our only genuine swing bowler, and we replace him with a guy who hasn't played a test in years??? Crazy!! And Hazelwood is an upgrade on Siddle.

Who the f*** is running the show over there?? Just some weird selections.
That's all fair enough but surely seelctors can't go making changes after one loss (presuming we lose). They have decided their best 11 and need to stick with it for 2 tests.

Otherwise they're sending the message that if you fail once you will be dropped.

Personally i don't think Hazlewood and Starc make much a difference to Siddle and Pattinson (I would have gone Hazelwood over Siddle for this test)

Bancroft is a nothing player and don't expect him to make many runs all series.

Paine cannot humanly **** off out the captaincy quick enough
Yep. Smith should be reinstated immediately. Next test should be:

Warner
Harris
Kawaja
Smith
Head
Patterson
Wade
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazelwood

Carey and Patterson brought into squad and Paine and Marsh or Neser sent home.

Wade can’t keep and failed badly with the bat lol and Patterson hasn’t been able to hit it of the square all tour

Good to see the Aussies recognise Burns's knock. Batted all day, debut ton, got England virtually level. Great work.

Starc will almost certainly play the second test.

Wade and Bancroft will still be under a lot of pressure for their spots.

There's a lot to be said about having a settled line up. Or at least have the vast majority of spots sown up leading into the first test of a big series. England don't have a great XI by any stretch (obviously we don't either) but they probably had ten positions that were decided some time ago. The only question mark I can really recall was 4 front line quick's with Ali batting 7, or another specialist batsmen at 4 and Ali at 8. There was also - insanely IMO - half a question mark about Broad's position in the XI. By and large, that was really it.

Compare it to us - We had all sorts of permutations going on right up until a day or two before. Which 2 of Bancroft, Harris, Khawaja will open and bat #3? Which 2 of Head, Labu, Marsh and Wade will take #5's and 6? If Bancroft wasn't batting up the top, could he be used at #5 or #6? Which 2 of Starc, Pattinson, Haze and Sids will bowl alongside Cummins and Lyon?

You can bring who ever you want back in but we need that fire that aggression. We look like we are just going through the motions out there.

Burns got hit early as he takes his eye off it as soon as he ducks why don’t we give him some more short stuff test technique unsettle him instead of just bowling the same areas all day long. If we hit him a few time it will be on his mind all series.

Good knock from Burns. England shouldn't get too excited too, there's a long list of one hundred or so wonders like Robson, Lyth, Jennings etc. in recent times who played a good innings and could never really do it again.

We were simply under par with the bat. The pitch isn't easy but I feel 350 was gettable with patience and we just couldn't find a way in that first session.

It wasn't pretty at all, but our batsmen could take a real leaf out of Burns book. Just gotta dig in.

Funnily enough, despite the horror show yesterday threatened to become, today has been a worse day for us. Par score for mine is low 300's, and we finished just shy of that. At current going, England are going to go well past that. However, they aren't past that, or even past our score yet, so there's still a chance for us to bring this back under control. Don't forget England have had their share of collapses in recent years.

I joined the coverage about half way through the day (and saw some highlights from earlier) and to me I reckon our bowlers toiled, but not with any great skill. Certainly not when you know what Cummins and Pattinson are capable of. Patto was the pick and was rewarded with two wickets, but none of the four bowled consistently well enough for long enough to put England under enough pressure.

At the same time none of them bowled terribly - as individuals each were about 5 to 10% short of their best and over the course of a day the batsmen just slowly pulled away and before you know you walk off the field and they are 4/250+. The footballing equivalent would be those matches were one team edges away at about 2 goals a quarter and ends up with a 50-point flogging over the other team.

Gotta say we didn't have loads of luck, which can be a big short term factor in success on the cricket field. Some of it we couldn't control - How many edges did Burns send through slips and gully? I reckon I lost count. There was a couple of streaky shots with around an hour to go that just cleared mid wicket that could have easily gone to hand. But that is cricket - shit happens.

The disappointing thing is some of it we could control - for instance the non review on Burns was a shocker which was never anything worse than umpire's call then absolutely burnt one with Patto bowling at the death. Following on from yesterday's non reviews of Warner and Patto, and I reckon our boys are a bit rattled on that front.

I don't think I'm selling any state secrets when I say a huge turnaround is needed straight away tomorrow morning.

Will be lucky to not be 200 behind against a side that has Bairstow,Ali and Woakes in the sheds, ultimately just didn't make enough runs and will pay for it.
