Sheesh HODGEYROAD your being harsh. From the day Clarko walked in the door we have seen a competitive Hawthorn off field, on field, week after week, season after season with and without the cattle.

Now competing within the AFL's socialist era of, ambassador payments, 'unequalisation', academies and compromised drafts etc the club is fighting around the fringes to put a winning side together. We are not going to yield despite the AFL's shitty playing field.

Which ever way it goes it is a marvelous time to be a Hawk fan. I really find it difficult to criticise the club given the way the the league is structured, as the HFC is doing everything they can to be competitive. Nothing but admiration for mine.

And judging by this PC speech, hes not about to fall in love with the smell of his own doodoo like sheedy in the end.

In the "ignore elite picks' thread, that seems to be the final argument 'oh hes good NOW but wait till he turns into a liability like Sheedy did"

Patton for a future fourth rounder which is what was exchanged for us as part of the Frost trade. So we have landed Patton, Frost and pick 42 for pick 50 and next years second rounder.

So..

We did it again?

So with Frost and now Patton secured what is our next port of call? You'd think we'll get a pick around 40-50 for Pitto so we might have something to maybe swoop in and get a Poppy replacement. Thoughts?

Naa, Finn will go for around pick #15, so we will use pick #11 in draft, and match Finn, but we will want another pick up our sleeve in case he goes for higher, Don't think pick #30 and #42 cover Pick #12.

Wait!! Just checked, yes Pick #30 and #42 will be enough if he goes at #12. So that pick will be free to use.

What about Pitto & Pick 11 for Pick 9. Fair trade if the Papley trade does't happen and will pretty much ensure us a draft selection before any match on Finn. Could give them pick 61 as well if needed to sweeten the deal.

We can go into deficit anyway so a few hundred points here or there is not a big deal.

Don't forget that there will be a bid for Green before our pick which the Giants will match so pick 11 will actually be pick 12 which is getting close to Finn's value.

Speculation today from Cal Twomey that Dee's traded for 8 because they want Weightman. He was one that was outside our pick in his September Mock Draft

I think that works in our favour. Weightman is a positional reach and means that another player we rate highly could potentially slide.

exactly what I think too, however, if GWS get inside a bid on Green they will jump up to match pushing our pick to #12 so it might even out a bit

Hopefully we pick up bonar or another mid. Wouldn’t mind luke partington as a delisted FA. Wouldn’t surprise me if we pick up a jack newnes or some sort in the free agency period

If we could now land Bonar (or another big bodied, aggressive, fast mid/HF) + use Pick 11 in the Draft & grab Finn - this off-season would be officially INSANE!

20yr old Bonar (21 in 2020) as a Mid/HFF
18yr old Pick 11 Midfielder
18yr old Finn as a Mid/HFF

I love the Hawks to look at and pick up Luke Partington would be a great pick up

Totally agree. Watched Partington in the SANFL this season and cannot believe he was delisted by the Eagles. IMHO, definitely an AFL player. He's a quality lad as well.

Certainly above SANFL level, brought me much joy watching him this year. If he gets picked up I hope it's by us.

A lot of the moves we make will depend on list management decisions. Putting my recruiting hat on and assuming we get Pick 48 for Pittonet (with no other list moves) our list would sit in the current position:

Ins: Patton, Frost, Hanrahan, Nash
Outs: Roughead, Birchall, Pittonet, Shoenmakers, Minchington, Mirra, Miles

We will have 3 live selections at the draft and will have Pick 11, Pick 30, Pick 42, Pick 48 & Pick 61. A bid on Finn will likely mean Pick 30 + Pick 42 are used on him leaving us with 11, 48 and 61 (a pretty good position given our history with later picks and other acquisitions).

We can have an additional player on the senior list at the expense of one rookie selection (shouldn't be a problem since Mohr is retiring + Hanrahan being upgraded) which means 4 live selections is a sweet number.

I would probably do the following:
Pick 11: Luke Jackson (a long term prospect - give him the 2/3 year Box Hill apprenticeship and by then McEvoy will have retired & Ceglar 32. Kid is the next Grundy and if available now would be an ideal time to select him).
Pick 30 + Pick 42: Finn Maginness (classy inside/outside mid)
Pick 48: Ned Cahill (speedy pressure forward)
Pick 61: Luke Partington (readymade mid that can rest forward. Can impact from Round 1 if required)
Rookie Selection 1: Harrison Pepper

However things start getting complicated if we pick up a DFA like Bennell/Webb - it means we will either have to delist another player (Brand/Puopolo) or pass on Pick 61 which seems wasteful. While I do believe Poppy is past his best we do really lack pacey pressure forwards, and while Brand is depth only if he leaves the next in line will be Kosi who while promising seems nowhere near AFL.

That being said I would still delist Brand if we pick up Bennell. We can move Gunston/O'Brien to the backline temporarily to cover if we do not believe Kosi is ready while the same cannot be said about a Poppy replacement.

I am not convinced we get pick 48 for Pittonet. Today we have seen Darcy Cameron and Billy Frampton traded. Frampton was a future fourth and Darcy Cameron was a late third with an early fourth included. We may have to include pick 61 if we are to get 48 but even then it is a better deal for us than anything that went through today. Their fourth rounder is pick 72 and would think that is unders so I think it might be more that we get 65 if they get that for Andrew Phillips
