yepSam Gray would be a good pick up as a DFA, he's a solid player, our new Matty Wright.
So DFA period.
Out of contract but not out of luck: AFL veterans who could still find new homes

Guys I wouldn't mind us looking at:
Sam Gray, Jack Newnes, Sam Murray and Bennell for a punt.

Can only assume the club is confident that Betts will play the permanent small forward option and Papley is a lock for next year
Names that interest me:
Riley knight - midfield support, tough
Rupert wills - midfield support, tough
Sam Murray - we need a rebounding defender
Harley bennell - IF fit, is a star
Jack Martin - obv
Billy stretch - can play?
Newnes - high quality for DFA (we seem keen)
Cody Hirst - wanted him mid-season draft
Fletcher Roberts - his name literally interests me. Can't work out if he fights pirates, owns a menswear chain or is a high court judge.
Newnes could be next season's Nic Newman.
Prediction:
We won't get Martin in the PSD
Carlton and the Gold Coast suns will trade picks before the national draft.
Gold Coast will at the same time, conveniently delist Martin.
Carlton will recruit Martin as a delisted free agent.
Now my guess:
Carlton give 9, 43 and 57
Suns give 15, 20 and 78 (delist Martin)

We don't have a small forward problem.Newnes would be a very shrewd pick up. Very solid player at his best but looks like needs a fresh start. Also the best part about him is that he's durable.
But it doesn't solve the small forward problem...
Why would we give them 9? He's gone, he's out the door, he's not coming back. Call the Suns' bluff and make it abundantly (albeit politely) clear to Melbourne he has no interest in playing for them.Prediction:

Why?You wouldn't take that deal if they offered it? they wont but id take it
Why?
We wouldn't do that deal - at least I certainly hope we wouldn't.Even though we 90% guaranteed martin will be a blue, this will 100% guarantee it and contract $$$ can be worked out better, plus we get 2 picks inside the top 20 - apparently a pretty even draft, pick 9 & 15 wont be much different.
Unless of course we have plans for that no.9 pick to trade out for a different deal - but if we are going to the draft with pick 9, id trade it on that scenario (but it wont happen - GC wont do that deal)
SOS sounded less than luke warm on Bennell yesterday.Bennell, Newnes, Gray thanks
Not sure why people think we need to do a deal with the Suns.
I am pretty sure we will be in no hurry to do a deal with them any time soon, let alone do them a favor.
GC are not our worry re: Martin. They can huff and puff all they like but he will not be there in 2020.
Melbourne is our only slight concern at this stage.
