All the hype is around us getting a 25 y.o. midfielder in their prime.

In all honesty, I reckon a 30 year old stop gap would work better for us.

We really just need someone filling a void for the next 12-18 months before Dow, Setterfield and Stocker take on a greater load in the midfield.

Gibbs for a third rounder would be the perfect solution.

It may not be Gibbs- (but why not) but i agree that experienced mids being forced out by their clubs en lieu of playing the younger emerging players makes a lot of sense and wouldnt cost much. " Faire le Pont"

We probably need to clear out 3 of them along with Fasolo, Le Bois and Kerr, then get one of Polson and O'Dwyer onto the rookie list. That opens up some exciting opportunities for us through the draft and free agency periods.

EDIT: I've left out Phillips and Lobbe, who are arguably a foregone conclusion.
Totally agree Jimmae....O'Dwyer should be rookie listed at best. Has shown nothing at all in the VFL and was a speculative pick in the ND.
I'm not sure how we can clog a spot on the senior list if we're looking to go hard in the trade period, and still require a mandatory 3 picks in the ND.

It all comes back to the age old consideration - a champion team vs a team of champions.

Premiership sides are generally those who get everything working best in that particular year, not who has the most talented list.

There is a reason why Richmond, West Coast, Bulldogs have all won flags in recent seasons, whilst GWS has consistently fallen short.

Elite talent is always welcome - we are obviously keen on Coniglio and rightly so - but you cannot afford to just look at the top end of your list, you must also constantly look to raise the floor and improve the bottom end.

And it is for that exact reason why I see value in so many players who may become available at the end of the year, for various reasons.

It just comes down to price.
Very true

When Richmond got Grigg & Houli there was alot of people complaining we were getting retreads from other teams that were soft and not best 22 for Carlton/Essendon.

Then there were also alot of people who didnt like the call to trade #6 for an injured Prestia and Caddy was also very much argued about then Nankervis seen as the 3rd stringer at swans but traded for #41 to become our #1 Ruckman None of these players were considered Elite talent and many asked that famous question. Will they be part of our next premiership. And they were

You never know there could be players who are not really getting games or just seen to be role players that gell the blues so its nnot all about elite talent or the stars. Papley & Coniglio will certainly be a massive upgrade on some players on the blues list but speed is a concern from my POI and Carlton need more speed on the outside and lob is a player that the blues need to step up in 2020

Where does Samo fit into our defence next year? If he can spend time working on the defensive side of his game over pre-season, I would love to have him there come 2020. Nobody else can slice through the defensive zone with precise 30m darts on angles like Samo can.

Plowman Jones Newman
Samo? Weitering Marchbank/Docherty?

Pity that we also need him kicking inside 50.
Maybe Jack Martin really is the answer?

Think we will shed one of Marchbank or Plowman over the next 1-2 seasons. It’s just not sustainable to play 4 talls, especially as Doc and Newman play taller than they are.

Simpson Jones Newman
Doc Weitering Marchbank

With Thomas off the bench and SPS/O’Brien floating back when needed.

As good as our backline has been we will need to start replacing soon. One of Williamson or Schumacher needs to stand up and take a spot, not sure Goddard is the answer to Jones but he’s worth keeping around. Another Newman type acquisition would be perfect.

If anything he's taken the pressure off docherty to get back to his absolute best from the get go.

Long term it may come down to newman vs plowman for the final position in the back 6. Plowman better defensively, newman better offensively. I'd probably take newman in a vacuum but withe Samo and Doc there maybe the offensive side is already covered.

Said it heaps but Jones kicking on as a defender has upset our long-term back 6 stability. All of Weitering, Marchbank, Jones and Plowman is too tall imo. 4 tall defenders + 1 small defender + 1 runner just gives us no drive.

Look at West Coast's back 6 yesterday.
We're not too tall, we just need a Jetta type to bring the ball out.

For sure.
I would say that Samo/Doc/Newman are different types, don't quite have that blistering pace, but definitely have the ability to bring the ball out.

Would love to have Willo back, and hearing good things about Cottrell.

I'm not worried about the run. We have it. It's the cohesion amongst the defence and ball use that we need. It's there just time and we need to have a settled defence

perfect recent example Newman fro swans

No idea on his contract status, but Shumachers game today ranks as one of the worst debut games ive ever seen. Staggered if he is sighted again this season, and even more staggered if he is anywhere near an AFL list next year

You’re kidding aren’t you?

Got more of the ball than 8 of his team mates, went at 76% disposal efficiency and earns himself a free. But I suppose giving away two free kicks is all you saw and is enough to banish him forever.

Pffft

Agree.
Apart from getting done holding the ball x 2, probably adjusting to the massive tempo leap, thought he was pretty solid 1st up.
His kicking especially was accurate.
Love to see more of him :)

Re. List Turnover:

A lot will depend on the new coach.
If for instance a Voss or Clarkson got the role, they may wish for a little time to evaluate the list post round 23.
If Teague does get the job though, it will likely be swift and we'll have 5 to 6 names wiped before the first week of the finals.

The other thing is that you don't want to move too many players off, if you haven't good draft picks.
No pointy replacing something you have with something inferior or more players in the 'project' status. No more project players for now.

What I'd like to see, even if I don't like to wipe players -

LeBois - 3 years on the rookie list and there will be no more.
Lobbe - Make him our ruck coach. Just do it.
Lang - Seen enough to know he isn't the right fit for this club.
Garlett - If Teague wanted to see what he's got, opportunity was there. I feel Teague has seen enough.
Fasolo - One year contract. Trigger left dormant. Thank you and see you.

They're the first 5 I feel could go after our season is done.

Several more on tenterhooks until after the trade period, including Kerr, Goddard, Phillips.

Not taking into account Casboult moving on and Simpson retiring....so it looks that about 8 players this year. That seems to be the magical number.

I'm sorry everyone, but I cannot abide Schumacher and Goddard getting contracts for next year. I'm not going to put today's result on them, but they are not even good depth for an AFL team, let alone prospects with significant upside.

Schumacher has almost zero physicality to his game, and Goddard has even less speed, and it hurts their ability to provide defensive cover for the team. Long kicks, but not enough of a consistent combination of zip and precision. Between the two of them, it honestly looks like Schumacher sneaks Goddard his card for the weights room, so no one tracking the logs realises he's never set foot in the place.

Lang and Garlett aren't doing themselves massive favours either, but at least they have the raw athletic tools to work with.

We probably need to clear out 3 of them along with Fasolo, Le Bois and Kerr, then get one of Polson and O'Dwyer onto the rookie list. That opens up some exciting opportunities for us through the draft and free agency periods.

I think Schumacher will remain on the list, there is plenty of room for growth if the club is patient

We also have a number of defenders that are older in that area, compared to the rest of the squad, in Simmo, Daisy, injury concerns with Doc and Willo
