Question, considering we are shedding huge levels of Salary Cap this year, could paying portions of Betts and Jenkins Salary in 2020 be a strategy to free up more cap space for targets in FA 2020?

I.e. There are 2 well known targets next season in FA (Grundy and Luko). Both will attract big money. So for arguments sake, by paying say $100K of Betts this year, and $200K of JJ’s, we could strategically use that money to help fill our 95% required salary cap this season on unlisted players.

Meaning the following year we automatically free up $300k without cutting or trading anyone to put on top of an already big Brodie Grundy offer.
I think that your explanation would better demonstrate the benefit if you mentioned the current salary of those players. Some people might not know.

From all reports in the media Betts is on $600k so if we move him on and agree to pay $100k towarsd what Carlton intend on paying him that saves us $500K. Like wise with Jenkins. If he is on $600K and we contribute $100K towards his salary we save another $500k of what we would have paid if we keep him. So thats like $1m in savings. Of course there will be salaries to pay any new player but if they come from the trade that wont be too big an impact.

Ive mentioned this before and I can only go on what I have been told

Betts is nowhere near $600k, its closer to $400k, could be a little less

His extention contract was front end loaded with his final year being by far his lowest yearly sum in his time at AFC

GWS have less currency if we leave it until draft night. They will have 14, 17 picks and next year's first too which will end up something like 18 -20 after PPs, etc get put in.

I'd rather pick 4 - the only way would be to add a player in to the 14, 17 deal, and that needs to be done in the next week
And could that player be Hatley. I wouldn't mind getting Hatley and say pick 14. Thats like two pick 14's and one was in that strong draft field of last year. If thats not enough then perhaps their pick 40. I mean you could ask for 14, 18 and Hately but that wont happen.

It would be better to gain what the real benefits are for us rather than my guessing or listening to the media bullshit. So what your saying is that his current contract averages out at $600K per year but because we over paid him in the first couple of years out last installment might only be $400. If we pay $100K of his contract and then pay his replacement (what is it for a rookie these days..guess $85K) we aren't saving all that much for a warchest. I assume it would be a similar situation with Jenkins. I have shared my 3000th post with you. Unfortunately there is no prize :)

Agreed .. always rate your point of view James_37 .

A big year of league footy and a couple of weeks of premiership celebration certainly could be taken into account as well .

With players like Gould all you need to do is watch them play , 2 x AA U/18 + League Premiership Player as KPD in SANFL .

He will be a gem for whoever gets him .
Gotta agree. I have always rated #James_37 comments

Why recruit a gun to play in the side when you can recruit two lesser talents who need 3 years to mature in the SANFL side. 2023 is gonna be epic.
Pretty much everyone bar the top 2 and MAYBE Green are going to need time. A kid like Gould is physically ready and he's due to go after 10.

It doesn't sit entirely well with me though it must be said. I can't see the Giants falling, even after that GF humiliation. Mumford and Sauce will be next to useless in ruck but their midfield is so good it won't matter.

Pressure of expectation is the only thing that'll see them fall IMO

No they can't because we are going to bid on Green, GWS have to get pick 3 or 4 in order to pick a top player and then get green with later points.
I think we’d probably need to incentivise Sydney more otherwise they’d just want to do the 12 & 18 for their pick 5 straight with gws. But obviously gws want our pick 4 because they know Hamish will bid on Greene.

SYD give pick 5
SYD get pick 12, 18, Knight

GWS give picks 12, 18, & Hately (or 2020 1st rd)
GWS get pick 4

ADL give pick 4 & Knight
ADL get picks 5 & Hately (or 2020 1st)

Everyone wins. GWS are obviously giving up a bit but they will end up with 2 top 5 quality players so they should pay up big.

The amount of players out of those drafted making any sort of impact in their first or second year is well and truly in the minority

This draft period is going to be one of the most important ever we have finished 12th and 11th with the enormous chance of dropping lower

The list looks well and truly suspect which is stating the obvious going on our results

There is a review going on due to the fact all of the above is occurring

Hopefully those doing the review will have some recommendations on what we should be doing re this list management / recruiting issue we see ourselves in

Lever had completed his rehab having done it the year prior to his draft.... the big difference.

And we're talking a 3rd tall defender in Lever remember ;) ;)
...not a mid/utility that has shown top end talent in all 3 parts of the ground.
But does Kemp find enough of the ball ? ....if you struggle at junior level, how does that translate to AFL ?.....not a statement, but a question

GWS have 14&17 = 2186
Geelong have 12&18 = 2253pts
We have 4 = 2034pts

Obviously I’d prefer Geelongs picks as long as there is nothing else going back to them. Personally I’d rather keep 4 but with the number of players we need to replace...

Thoughts?

Reckon it would be very much specific player driven. If there’s a couple of players that they reckon will go around those picks that will have a good chance of being near as good as what we’ll get at 4 then it seems the go to me.

interestingly geelong said after the kelly trade that there's a couple of players they are keen on so will be looking to move up.
but then its also been said that last year clubs with high picks were knocking back offers left right an centre from others wanting to move up, this year its the opposite with clubs with high picks seeking offers for those picks.

I expect a bit of movement in the top end of the draft

GWS aren't giving up Hately
They’re stupid if they don’t.
He won’t get a game. They currently have Kelly, Coniglio, Toranto, Hopper, Deboer, Ward, Caldwell, Bonar, Hately and they will gain Tom Greene this year too.
Then they have Toby Greene who can also rotate through midfield.
If he doesn’t get a game at all next year and we come knocking, surely he asks for a trade. He is surplus to their needs. Their 1st rounder might be more valuable to them. At least they can use it on an area of need.

Bonar goes home and Ward is 30+.

They were all there when he got drafted bar Tom Green
