A couple of days ago I felt really good about our chances of landing Dougal, but now I've heard he "doesn't mind" playing as a forward even though he prefers to play in defence coupled with Fantasia's probable move, I've now go the uneasy feeling we'll be trumped by the Dons...

We can’t let this happen and need to give him an offer that he can’t refuse so that he nominates us.
We have the cash and are in need of a young up and coming key defender like him.

Really? We should bring out the Godfather routine for *checks notes* Dougal Howard?

Nice to have, but ok to miss too.

Geelong reportedly wanting a top 10 pick. If Dougal is Dougaling his way to North do we trade 8 to Geelong for 14 and 24? Or would those pricks expect something else back with that? We then trade our pick 27 to PA and keep a first and second round pick.

You don’t make an offer to a player that isn’t considered to be top 2 in his position at his current club.

Would be a nice get and would be best 22 for us but the fact that Port told him to go looking rather than saying yes we will play you in defence next year and beyond says a lot.

Geelong would want a later pick as well.

Pick 8 = 1551 points
Pick 14 and 24 = 1946

Deficit of 395 = pick 42.

We could still snare a really good player with 9, Ash, Young, Stephens, Kemp, Flanders, any of them can potentially be there. By 14 odd all of those guys will definitely be gone and it'll be more of a raffle for an elite talent.

Would be better to have more top picks but as it stands we have very little currency to trade on. Wouldn't mind trading a future first for a similar deal though.

Worst case scenario we keep to our current plan which has been taking a top 10 talent like Jy (should have gone top 10), LDU & TT and then backing in our late pick drafting to add the next Larkey, Zurhaar, Hosie, Xerri (bullish on those last two) etc.

Says more about Port’s list management and culture than us throwing money at a KPD with huge upside.

100%

That's what I want to see more than anything. Next year will be a shit show. Get more this year and get an extra year into the youth.

Dougal Howard is a fringe development player. The mind boggles as to why anyone is working themselves in to a state over him.

It's a case of just get someone, anyone. Bizarre stuff.
Agree with the first part but not the last. The club has identified a need - KPD, presumably having been caught short by Scooter's retirement earlier than expected - and are chasing someone who might fill that hole. And given our options seem to be either a 50-game, 23 year old or drafting an 18 year old who may not be ready for three to four years, it's not hard to work out why we're asking the question.

It probably does, but it doesn’t mean that we should be throwing money at him. Our offer is probably better than what Port or * are offering, but to make an “offer he can’t refuse”(which is what? 600k plus?) is reckless.

Nah,

Industry is working off a 20% deficit in the way of the selling club when trying to move up the draft order, especially upgrading into the top 10 with pick swaps. If clubs want to upgrade they have to pay for it and incentivise the selling club.

Pick 8 = 1551 points
Pick 14 and 24 = 1946 * 80% = 1556.

So that scenario is almost bang on.

Tim Kelly is an Eagle! The midfielder has joined West Coast from Geelong

The Cats receive picks 14, 24 and 37 (2019 draft) & a first-round (2020 draft) selection

The Eagles get Kelly, pick 57 (2019 draft) & a third-round selection (2020 draft)

Its not so much as having a first round pick but where it is in relation to getting a better player. keep #8 and tell geelong to look somewhere else for a higher pick.

That's an unbelievable deal for Geelong under the circumstances.

WC have essentially coughed up pick 1 + a late pick from a points perspective for an uncontracted player who nominated a single club.

Leigh Colbert-esque deal.
