I think it means that he’s forced into the draft if Giants and Cats don’t agree to a trade.
A player can change their mind where the want to play. It's not set in stone. Having said that I don't know any player that has nominated a preferred club and not gotten there or stayed at their current club. But it is entirely possible that another team could come late with a better offer and Cameron could change his mind. However if a trade isn't done and he doesn't want to stay at gws the yes he must go to the draft

Obviously wouldn't happen, but in theory now that the Giants have matched, could we put an offer including pick 3 to them? Or do they have to work something out with Geelong now that he's nominated?

The mechanics as best I understand it.

FA period is exclusively for them (RFA) it finishes Wednesday
Up to Geelong and GWS to work out a trade

Cameron Mgr saying it is "lifestyle reasons" and definitely does not want to be at Blacktown anymore but no bad blood.
J McCarthy footy boss GWS says they don't want picks. They are sick of having young guns for 2 years and losing them they want a player,
(The most likely is Menengola the other big bloke cant spell it IMO - interesting as it might release Pruess not done! Parfitt and other Cats contracted don't want Blacktown either

Then Trade week starts then an opportunity for all clubs to trade for him if a deal not done
Maybe why Melb holding off on Brown, and Colliwobbles desperate to create cap space. If there is one team that needs him it is them

Forget Swans and pick 3. Unlikely to have the money and won't satisfy anyone.
Use pick 3 for the best most willing draft prospect to come to Swans player available.

Sooner or later AFL need to reinstate some form of COLA like advantage to the Northern states to attract and retain players. GWS is a player retention disaster from the start
But might have to put a big cork in Eddies chins/cheeks to achieve that.

Mason Cox is out of contract. Should offer him 3 years, should cost less trade currency as he can always go to the pre-season draft

You cannot possibly be serious. Rebuild has been going on since 2016 you say. We played in a fu@#ing grand final in 2016. Are you suggesting that Geelong will now be going into a rebuild? We finished 6th in both 2017 & 18. Our rebuild stated after 2019 when we finished 15th and the club realised a rebuild was required. Yes, we have been going to the draft the last number of years just as every other side has. It is a requirement that you add at least 3 new players to your senior list.
2 years of not being in finals since 2003 yet you make it sound like we are a Carlton or even worse an Essendon. Going after big name players because they over rated their list and they are now stuck in no man's land and probably will be for a number of years. We will be contending long before they will. You would make a perfect list manager at Essendon.
If it was so easy to just go out and trade in all the players you want, pick up a free agent every year and only draft guns, every club would be doing it.
You have no concept of how a list is built. It's done over 4-5 years not 2 as you would have it.
But, then again., there are others on this board who also believe it is so, so simple to add all the pieces we need in just a year or two and you feed of each other's pessimism.

Round 1, 2016 had three debutants: Papley, Mills and Hewitt. (Best not to talk about Talia)

There has been a focus on regenerating since the end of 2015 (Goodes, Pyke, Shaw, Jetta and Bird moved on). Horse said exactly that at the swans function the night of the grand final. As he also said, doesn’t mean we can’t remain competitive and challenge every year

The system seems to put more emphasis on the annual salary rather than the total value of the contract.

I don't think there should be compensation picks at all... All I'm saying is that as the system stands it is an understandable result.
Agreed, I don't think there should be compensation picks at all, but if the VFL keep it, no compensation picks if want transfer to a club that was in the top 8 in year of request.

Totally agree on the historical bits, especially 2016. Amazed those umps can look in the mirror.
Pridham's approach we all hope will bear fruit, especially if he gets some support.
My point was a small one. Once a decision like this is public, it's done and dusted. Band 3 for Crouch is about right - it's the Band 1 for Daniher that's dodgy as heck.
We need to get behind Pridham.

I read the Lions contract to Daniher was 2.5 for three years, so 833k a year is fair to get Ist round compo.

The real anomaly is what are lions thinking? 15 games in three years? I’d say he’s a Hail Mary. Did they learn nothing from Fevola ...that one trade set them back a decade just as they were building. Watch this unfold

Hawthorn included all of Vickery’s 2nd year $500k salary in their TPP in 2018 despite his retirement, just the same as the rules applicable to us:

Wells was an unrestricted free agent contract and thus could not be matched by North. Therefore the rules are different and he was entitled to renegotiate his contract at any time with no further TPP implications for Collingwood.

In both instances quoted the rules have been applied the same way as for all clubs.

Makes all the sense in the world for me. They've been top 2 the last two years at the end of H&A season, they've made it progressively closer to playing a GF and one of their big weaknesses is regarded to be KPF. Plus, many of their best players are yet to hit their primes in terms of playing or earning potential so they've got salary cap space, so taking a flyer on Daniher to me makes plenty of space. I like that they went for it when they're in their prime to win a flag. Plus they're a non-AFL-fishbowl city and have a medical team with an excellent track record - both of which lodge as potentially strong positives to get Daniher back to full fitness.

We're a bottom 4 side who is still some way from being top notch. They're right in their window and had money spare so went for it. I pay it very highly.

Fevola had off field issues not on field. So the comparison to Daniher is hard to follow. Lions are locked into Daniher for 3 years it’s a large amount but only a short period. Seems like a good strategy. We have Franklin paid to sit in the stands when his contemporaries have all retired.

I like next nexts first for Treloar.

Discuss

You are diss'n Lions for a hail Mary punt , yet suggest that?

Treloar's Mrs has a 1 yr netball contract QLD to have a last shot at career & maybe the Australian team selection then back to Melbourne

Why would MR $900K a yr man (with head noises) wanna be in Sydney away from everyone he knows (except some at GWS who might still be there)

Very much an outside mid. Stephens and Blakey will be much better in time

Posted this on another thread a while back, but thought I'd post here for your thoughts:

Trade
Preuss is most likely to go to the Giants, but a part of me is still hopeful we're in with a shot. If not, I hope we take a punt at either Peter Ladhams or Sam Hayes from Port. Hickey is the worst possible option, not sure he'd be better than Sinclair or Aliir at the centre bounces to be perfectly honest. Probably more durable though.

A big bodied mid is something that is needed too, seeing as we most likely won't get one in the draft and Kennedy isn't getting younger. Riley Collier-Dawkins, Constable, Will Brodie, and Sier would be my preferred options in order.

Cox can stay far away from Sydney, thanks. A 29yo who only has a couple of good quarters per game? Nah.

When it comes to who we could trade out, the big name already there is Aliir. I love him, he's very good at playing that zoning big defender role ala McGovern, Rance, but unfortunately we haven't had the personnel to let him do that, and his versatility in defending roles isn't that great. Him playing ruck is tragic, although he does help in the centre contest. I'd be ok with trading him to Port, but only if we get one of their rucks, ideally with a draft pick upgrade for good measure to grab the Academy boys.

Another big one on my list is Sam Reid. Wouldn't get a heap, but a mid to late third rounder would be helpful. Others who could be traded out with a wee bit of currency are Ronke, and possibly, very slightly maybe George Hewett.

Draft
So we're definitely getting Campbell and Gulden with bids between 5-12 for Campbell, and 15-30 for Gulden. The talk of us maybe not grabbing Gulden terrifies me, so I just ignore it basically. Keeping pick 3 is great, any of McDonald *fingers crossed*, Tillthorpe (most likely to be able to play ruck), Phillips, or Grainger-Barrass would be very helpful for our list. Given that Campbell and Gulden are coming in, I don't really want Elijah Hollands, who is a similar type of mid/fwd.

Trading that pick 3 for a "star" would be a huge mistake, unless that player is 24 or ideally younger. Our list as it stands is the third youngest in the comp, and probably won't be pushing for Grand Final contention for three to five years. Given our attempts at getting Daniher at the end of 2019, and Franklin's contract finally expiring in a couple of years, our salary cap should see us able to get at least one star in that three or so year period.

In terms of rookie draft, well it all runs in the family. Young Will Papley could end up being a clone of his brother. If Paddy McCartin does want to give it another shot with us, the rookie draft is where we'd probably grab him for peanuts. Either that or a very late pick in the National Draft. Otherwise Sam Thorne is another Academy kid who could be useful. Was at least on par with Campbell and Gulden in the midfield in the few Academy games played this year.

Sure to be a short interview.

"We're backing our kids"

"Ok thanks Charlie, the time is now 1:32, let's hear from our next caller, Barry from Adelaide who would like to discuss how Brad Crouch is worth the top 3 picks in the 2001 draft"

Imo we should get stef Martin across on a 2 year deal rather than hickey for 3

Stef Martin has spent a large of the last few years injured.

Hickey has been fit and last year when Nic Nat was injured was more than serviceable.

Also about to turn 34....

And people are worried about giving 3 to a 29 year old Hickey.
