The only photo I'd seen of Walsh (which might have been old) looked like he was 10 years off being big enough to ruck. Smith looks more physically developed.
Check out pics of Nat Fyfe when he was drafted and you’d think he would fall over in a strong breeze. Doesn’t always take that long with the right strength and conditioning team and dedication by the player

All our undrafted academy kids are already signed up as U19 academy returnees. No team can pick them up in the SSP or mid season draft.

So effectively we have a whole team of Keidean Coleman’s for next year.

I wouldn’t have selected any in the rookie draft either.

If one or two go on to really improve next season, that’s a bonus for us, as we still have first call on them to match a bid. And they’ll have to have an exceptional year to crack in to next year’s first round from everything I’ve heard and read.

In regards to Henry Smith, just been doing some reading up on him.

One thing stood out to me.

He played the full year at U18 level in the SANFL, no reserves or senior football.

He also wasn’t his teams first choice ruck, but rather played KPF and provided a chop out in the ruck.

I was thinking along the same lines. The draft strategy for this season seemed to be get Coleman and a couple of "draft and stash" because the last thing the club needs is even more young kids unable to get a game. Smith x 2, Robertson, Prior, Joyce, Madden, Berry Jnr, Ballenden are already on the list, we need to see what they can offer (or not) at the senior level.
Absolutely agree with the list of names.
IMO Madden is the fastest player on our list.
I just hope we invest time into Payne also, and all things being equal in preseason play Payne at the start of the year, otherwise I fear like any other player or person (thinking Noble) some of above names mentioned, will explore opportunities elsewhere. Most of the names mentioned are from interstate so there is no real link with Brisbane/QLD.
We might need the early draft picks next year to replace some of the talented fringe players who might depart. The notion of the same 22-24 for each week, could eventually weaken our depth. Robertson, Coleman and Payne only got their limited opportunities in AFL due to injuries.
At the very least, lets get some insight and play all the names mentioned above and Fullerton , in all the preseason games (if occurring), arguably some of the senior players don't require too much preseason games to be ready for round 1. Other posters will likely disagree and believe we should pick essentially the best 22 for the last preseason game to be prepared for round 1, but i strongly believe we have to see what we have. Why do we need to play Robbo, Birchall Adams as examples in preseason games at the expense of some of our young talent. Sure Hinge might have been fringe player but only had 3 AFL games, so difficult to gauge his potential. I can see why he left, and did predict him and Witho would explore options, although I strongly suspect Lions facilitated Withos departure. .

Seems a very strange choice. There must be something we see in him. Perhaps he is thought to be a better mark than Walsh or Heath?

Have heard there is likely only going to be 1 pre-season game this year.
Not a definite, but a definite possibility.

It's interesting. Given he had the runs on the board the previous year after playing in the under 17 all stars match it would seem they were holding him back this year.

Someone asked which potential top 8 teams improved at draft last night.

Few kids make a genuine impact as first year players, but I believe Port and St Kilda both got a player each who will help them improve.

West Coast got three that will improve their depth, and potentially all contribute in the second half of the season.

And forget their trade period and potential culture issues, but Collingwood had a very good draft, including the kid they just added in the rookie draft. They’ve almost drafted the entire core of their next midfield in one draft.

Of course we have to see if they can develop these kids.

Lions will then play a match or two against the Suns. Especially with the new reserve comp not starting until mid April?
Believe Lions and Suns played one preseason game at Metricon so looks very likely again.

What's the dealio with Ballenden and Matho? Have I missed something there?
Essentially downgraded to rookie list (along with Birchall). In the past few years at the Lions this means both not likely not at the club in 2022. Obviously Birchall will not be at the club in 2022.

Heath is reportedly a very good contested mark.

Draft Central interviewed the outgoing Sandringham Dragons coach on their utube channel, had a bit to say about Heath.

I don’t believe any club holds a kid back. Probably more a needs thing, if they didn’t have any genuine KPF’s in their U18 team.

Didn’t really do much in the U17 all stars match either.

But I didn’t watch the kid this year, so can’t comment on him as a player.

Just making some observations based on his scouting reports.

Some good or bad things to say?

It's definitely an underwhelming draft but we still have ESmith, Robertson and Joyce yet to get a decent run and Payne, Fullarton, TBerry and KColeman will get a chance to build on promising starts to their AFL career.
