The Coleman is mentioned to have happened, nothing else.

The "blocked" trade by the AFL was because Collingwood needed a future fourth from GWS to finalise their future first trade, which they got.

What I found interesting was that the recruiters rely heavily on player managers to work out whether another club will take a player they're interested in, and how to work their strategy around that.
Just read the article.

Last year Gil mentioned that before the draft starts, he walks around the room and asks each club who they’re going to draft, and by the time he’s spoken to all clubs, he has a very good idea of how the first round will pan out.

He bet Twomey that his list would be more accurate than Twomey’s “late mail phantom draft” last year.

Clubs would have a decent idea of the kids other clubs are interested in, early in the draft.

Anyway, the article just re-affirmed my view that our recruiters and list manager should have known the Pies would get back in to the draft ahead of our first pick, and most likely bid on Coleman.

It also tells me the Pies rated Coleman well within their top 20 kids in this years draft.

I think that's probably a reasonable assessment. Would've been interesting to see what was offered to try and move up or out of the pick.

The issue with moving up is that unless we moved up above Collingwood's first two picks, there's a real chance we could've moved out pick up for it to be used up matching a bid on Coleman. Then we lose the value of our original pick as well as the currency we used to move up (which I don't think we had anyway).

In terms of moving it into next year, considering GC traded pick 27 to Geelong for (Melbourne's) future third, I wonder (and doubt) whether we would've been able to pick up a second round pick.

We possibly could have shopped it on the night.

My guess is we probably thought that Richmond and Collingwood would make a trade once McInness was bid on.

Collingwood and GWS trading probably caught us by surprise.

I don’t know what offers were made, if any, for it.

I would have been happy with a current and future third round picks for it.

However, with the phasing out of nga bids over the next two drafts, there isn’t going to be much of a market for picks/points in the future.

Interesting/important to note that GC can't take Fahey as an academy selection.

I've got our strategy sorted for the 2021 draft already briz.

1- Demons finish with the spoon.
2- With pick 1 we bid on Nick Daicos... which the Pies match having to go into a 2022 deficit.
3- We select Jason Horne.
4- We trade out our 2022 1st round for a couple of early 2nd rounders to build up points to match the certain bid on the number 1 ranked player in the 2022 draft father/son prospect Will Ashcroft.

So we paid fair value for Blake?

I love our off season .

Daniher is a proven match winner up forward... and super star when fit and firing.
Some risk with injury, but we didn't have to trade for him.

Cockatoo again proven speed and finishing ability which is another major need of ours. Some injury risk... but we paid very little.

Whitho wanted out. Knew he wouldn't easily get into our 22, and another year in the reserves would come at great cost to his market appeal and career. Club handled this superbly, whilst managing our cap issues.

This is a draft where you could argue most picks are speculative. Very little recent data. We also have a very competitive situation aleady in the seniors.... so we've taken a longer term view with the picks we had.

We secured a 2nd first round selection in 2021 where we will have more data on draft prospects and the ability to respond if some of our older players clearly fall away.

With low data and high picks we draft the best runner, one of the most penitrating kicks with no go home factor, a 204cm developing ruckman who can clunk a mark.... and if course one of the better rated small forwards who happens to be the brother of another emerging star for the Lions.

- Brought in game changing super stars: Tick.

- Secured great picks in a furure draft where our needs will be more apparent and the draftees less speculative:
Tick.

Exited players with class, dignity and solved cap issues.
Tick.

Selected superstar attributes in all draftees in a highly speculative draft who won't expect a game round 1.
Tick.

Wtf are you guys going in about?
We finished 2nd last year and inherited a weak hand.... lol what we did!

Oh yeah.. we lost Noble.... which hurts, but we enhanced our culture immeasurably. We promoted from within showing other staff members they can move up if they display excellence. We also put Noble/ the person before our own objectives further enhancing culture amongst the staff.

What a team to follow.
No mess. All class. Great decisions.

Next year sounds like the year to get our eventual Rich replacement. Banks, Brooks, Browne, Chesser, Fahey, Rankin, Rayson and Sinn can all play off half back and have a great disposal.

You have it all wrong, Demons are winning the premiership next year.

That’s been my number one thought. That and best mid available, preferably either a classy playmaker type, damaging mid forward type, or big bodied type.

I’d prefer to trade our 2022 first for either a 2021 or 2023 first.

It should be easier to accrue multiple late second and/or third round picks in the future.

Age profile wise our list of players nearer to the end than are Birchall (HBF), Zorko (mid/forward), Robinson (mid), Rich (HBF), Lyons (mid) and Lester (third tall defender). Purely looking at that Briztoon it is evident that HBF and mid should be our focus.

It will be interesting to see where our picks fall but I expect two picks in the teens. More hopium but it would be great to acquire another first round draft pick by trading out our 2022 and getting a third rounder back.

2020 Daniher and Cockatoo into a side that played a prelim.
2019 CEY, Ah Chee and Birchall all played in Prelim
2018 Neale, Lyons, Adams and McCarthy. Only Adams not played the Prelim and you assume he would if not injured.
2017 Charlie and Hodge (retired)
That be 10 players traded into 22. since 2017 draft

2017 Draft players in the prelim 4 out of 5 drafted.
Rayner, Bailey, Starc, Payne.. Only Wooler misses out
So 14 of the players where not on the list 2016.
yes Adams, Cockatoo and Daniher need to get on the park

The interesting thing is the kids from 2018 and 2019 drafts.
No one seen NEAFL games as they replaced with scratch matches. So where are they at.
Same as kids in Vic etc COVID stuffed up a year of playing.. So we pushed late firsts into next year took Coleman and some development players
As the kids in 2018 and 2019 drafts I assume we know are almost ready
2018/2019 Draftees who got games.
Answerth, (9), Coleman (5) , Berry(6), Fullarton (2) and Dev 1 game.
So where are E Smith, B Smith, Joyce, Prior, Madden and McFayden(Knee) at?
Fullarton got games then injured. What happened to Dev after his game?
We do not know the coaches do
Ballenden also drafted in 2017, didn't play in Prelim: but I think got 2 AFL games in 2021. Payne played Prelim: due to injury to Gardner and as you said if Adams fit probably Payne would have missed out.
Daniher is a big in for us if he fires, he keeps us comfortably in the top 4 if playing well. Cockatoo sounds skilful, but Adams is arguably a solid 'back up', don't believe he is best 22 in 2021. Too many concerns regarding ongoing fitness, and his last AFL game against Hawthorne in round 1 was pretty ordinary.
Sounds like a few of the young guys might be close, and the newly proposed VFL comp will no doubt accelerate their development, hopefully we get TV or streaming coverage of the Lions reserve matches in 2021.

I'm quite interested to see how our ruck recruit progresses, interesting choice given our recruiting and apparent needs. Surely we are already heavily into trading in a ruck next year.

I would hope we are a long way down the path with another A grade mid.

Clearly drinking Kool-Aid.

Witherden wanted out and we exited players with class.

Still, the Lions are a great club.

We also have father son prospect, Noah Bradshaw, playing for the Murray Bushrangers next season.

As in Braddy’s son? I hope not but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him knock back a father son nomination. Braddy left on pretty bad terms and not sure things have been patched up since.
