I was keen on Hollands until I watched this update. I real don't like the mechanics of his running??
It's subtle, but when someone is doing something as simple as jogging in a straight line, your feet should at the very least be pointing forward and your knee should not jolt inwards on the leading leg. The trailing leg should also hinge at the knee so the lower leg goes straight back, not flared out at an angle.

This isn't the perfect view as its not straight on but these same subtle issues speak of compensation for something hidden - usually at the ankle or hip.

Ideally the legs should look like pistons when they go up and down in linear sense without any added rotation.

It may be a big deal, it may never be a problem. Its just where my eyes go if someone's already had a nasty leg injury.

There was a Twitter post from the Hawks earlier this year showing Golds doing some post ACL rehab exercises and his mechanics were shocking - albeit he wasn't at 100% at the time. Its a much better example but it all speaks to the same common issues that set athletes up to fail.

Bit of overreaction going on about Holland’s running mechanics, it’s never stopped him from dominating games.
It may have caused an innocuous incident that resulted in a ACL injury though.. I don’t actually know anything to be fair.

Or maybe his rehab ....
I know I’ll cop it for this but looking at his current body shape I’m not sure how well he’s looked after himself during Covid . That may extend to his rehab .
My cousin is Holland’s year (and coincidentally spent the last year recovering from his own ACL) and said he’s not really doing the recovery properly and apparently thats somewhat common knowledge. My cousin won’t make AFL but was determined to get the rehab 100% fwiw. He reckons Phillips is the one to take fwiw too.

Wow!
Thanks heaps for this- really great insight.

We need speed in the forward half of the ground. I want Wingard to play in the midfield next year, but that won’t happen unless Wright can recruit some small forwards.
I think Bailey Laurie is the best option here- for this to happen we'd probs have to trade further up the draft.

Wingard is an absolute beast when he is 70/30 mid fwd. his last 12 games at port when he played primarily in the mid was top 10 player worthy. Getting a pure speedy small forward is vital.

We definitely need a couple of speedy pitbulls up there. It’s easier said than done.

Have a look in the mirror you fat bastard :p

Is it possible that the club dont believe he will be there at our pick?
He does look a decent size compared to his draft video's and we do like our lads lean but man can that kid kick and demonstrate superman vision.

Imagine how much better he could be if he didn't have a few hidden handbrake going on. Its a point that's missed a lot in the industry. If it doesn't hurt it often doesn't get looked at. On one end of the spectrum something as simple as stiff hips can unnecessary set the knee up to become injured. And on the other its a literal handbrake to peak human performance.

To be fair, last year Dylan Stephens was expected to fall around our pick and Sydney ended up grabbing him at 5. If we are that keen on Perkins then it wouldn't surprise me if something similar happened this year.

I think Stephens was rated a top 5/8 prospect. Especially as it got closer to draft day.

Easy for us to make armchair claims about Hollands and his rehab/weight. Anyone who has gone through an ACL will tell you that it's easier to put on a few kgs through the rehab period. That will be easily shed once he hits pre-season and is able to freely run again.

Also the club will be well aware of how diligent he has/hasn't been.

Personally I don't really care as once he comes to the club he will be put on the right track very quickly. He's the most skilled and talented midfield player, which is exactly what we need.

What was his recorded weight change at the combine? I agree he looks heavier in that clip. Hodgey was a fatty at 18 though! Can’t teach those foot skills

Honestly not sure but no doubt there's someone who'd be able to answer that question.

While I definitely see what you're talking about with Hodgey that was his natural physique at that point in time.

This kids suffered a serious injury and should be doing his best to make sure he's doing as much as his body allows to either maintain his physique or better it, not apparently let himself go.

He actually looks like a totally different person and it doesn't come across as very professional or promising either.

Granted we've been going through a pandemic, but if anything this gave him an opportunity to ensure that others didn't get the jump on him.

Would also be interested in his body weight at the combine in relation to pre-injury as well 😁

They are crucial for success, teams rarely let the good ones go. I was spewing we never went after butler. Hopefully Morris can turn out decent, he loves a tackle.

I think that Morris will be a player.

Skillfully, hard as a cat's head and has a fair bit of campaigner about him.

Exactly what we need and hopefully we find someone to line up alongside him next season.
