This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

If Phillips was a bit better, then I would support you. (His skills are questionable) I think his skills are lacking, and he is not a big upgrade on what we already have.

When you add that list spots this year are at a premium, I think we should pass on him.

He came 7th in their best and fairest in 2019 and was 6th in 2018, he is well and truly in our best 22 if we can get him.

By that thinking though I'm not sure we would have recruited Aish and Acres though. I was always happy with getting Aish and Acres and I remember being in the minority or at the very least there being several voices passionately against them being recruited.

We had holes in our list then and we have holes know.
I said that in the last post. When we recruited those two we had no wingers (except Bewley) so it made sense. Now we have wingers plus Frederick in the wings so Phillips is of no interest to me. If he was really quick, maybe. He is basically a slower Langdon with a slightly better kick and worse defensive efforts.

Disagree. We have adequate players in every position when we are all fit which is why other mediocre players don't make us better.

You are massively overrating our list IMO, our wings are still an issue. I am a HUGE and nuffy fan of Acres but it was only 4 weeks ago that people were writing him off as a dud pickup. Phillips is also a better winger than Aish.

No, you're massively overrating fringe players from other clubs.

He played well though in the last month. Who cares what BF people thought 2 months ago if he was good 1 month ago? Like seriously, why would that remotely matter?

I like Aish more, but to each his own.

Aish is just about our best kick inside 50. Be crazy to have him pushed out by a guy who’s not that fast, and whose kicking isn’t great. Acres is a good kick as well. He showed in the last 3-4 games just how valuable he’s going to be to over the next few years.

You are literally talking about two fringe players that we got over on the cheap.

I'm just saying that if the club sees value in fringe best 22 players than I'll back them in. I won't be melting like some were when we recruited Aisha nd Acres.

Aish was splitting his time back flank and the wing, he has never played a full season of football on the wing. He would still be in the best 22 IMO. Phillips has played two seasons of full time wing better than anything we have on our list and will come relatively cheap in terms of picks due to the salary squeeze at Collingwood.

Fair call, and I understand he didn’t play the whole season on the wing. But he’s still our best kick I50, which was actually my point, although I do tend to the side of verbosity. 😬

beautiful.
reminds me of when the Pin Pals rhymed Homer with Homer in the Simpsons :D

If Phillips is gettable then ******* do it. Woulld instantly slot into a wing spot, maybe have Acres as a big inside body like he was in that pre season game?

He is basically Langdon who i think we would all agree we missed this season.

Assuming that players with two years remaining on their contract will be "best twenty two" and any players we bring in will push out other players who only have one season on their deals. Such as Phillips in, Aish pushed to half back... Nathan Wilson delisted end of 2021.

Acres, Aish, Blakely, Young, Frederick and Ryan are out contracted players for half back and wing for the next year years and beyond.
Phillips coming in pushes one of those out, even though they aren't absolutely all in the team at once anyway.

Conca (will trigger an extension), Wilson, Hughes, Hill, Watson, Giro, Duman are the players who would find themselves on the outer while only having the single year contracted.

Does the rolling down provide value?

I'm not explaining it very well but I'm insinuating that if we need to bring in a player at the top of the wing position it would make us better, it would make our depth better but also make our depth more expensive and limit our salary cap space. We may have that capability already on our list and the resources required to bring in that player and salary might be better spent making us far better in another area of weakness.

Then again, maybe we are horribly slow next year.

There is something about Narkle that screams “Moneyball trade” to me. He’s had a lot of injuries which is a big negative. But his best, in the flashes he has shown, has been bloody good. He’s only 22. If we were able to keep him fit, and get a consistent run of games into him he could be a great free pickup as a DFA. He would be a low risk gamble with potentially great upside. Tom Phillips on the other hand? Meh. Is he better than Aish or Acres?

If we brought in Phillips and moved Acres to the middle, it works almost definitely end Blakely at Freo. I wouldn’t complain. There are a few clubs who might be interested for a pick (or combo worth) late 40s - mid 50s.

Can everyone here that is talking up Phillips please go and read the Pies opinion of him? Guarantee if we sign him that most if not all of you will be hating half way through 2021.

Aish wasn't fringe, he played every game he was fit for in the preceeding two seasons IIRC. Was a fan of this one.

Acres I didn't pay attention to him that much at the Saints. I knew the rhetoric but was underwhelmed until his last month.

Also, seriously how many times do I have to say it. The reason why they made sense last year and similar trades don't this year is because we signed them last year. The situation has changed, we don't have a gaping whole on the wing because we got them last year.

Out: Hill, Langdon

Last years gaping holes:
Wing x 2

In: Aish, Acres

This years gaping holes:
0

I don't even know which points of mine your objecting to?

My whole point is we don't have any outright spuds getting games when everyone is fit and we have a surplus of players (most young and may improve) who would be considered fringe at a lot of other clubs. That's why I don't want any other clubs fringe players.

I'm not going to melt if we sign Phillips but nor does that give me any excitement. I don't think that as a package he is better than Aish or Acres and I also don't think he has much improvement left.

Fortunately for me, based on JL's media performance, I don't think we are interested in these players despite some media links. Maybe Narkle, but I am not sure he is even fringe (admittedly Cats are a good team).

Acres seems to be best suited to the wing. Also not sure he'd get games there over actual inside mids. More likely if Phillips came Aish would get shunted.

Depending on how you rate kicking he is either slightly better or slightly inferior to Langdon. I think we missed him and Hill a lot early but Acres covered at least one of them in the last month and Aish was serviceable/good when played there. Even Bewley does a similar job to what Phillips would do (slower but better kick).
