This is Part 1

The thread is continued in part 2:

Have to chuckle at some of the posts in here saying Cox is squeezed out. Freo fans GOATs at romanticising players when they are off camera.

ALL defs need to intercept and then use it these days, no one just stops. Pearce isn't pushing Cox out. I'm not saying Pearce is no good, but JLo will definitely wear Cox being a less pure defending given he wins it back. FWIW Cox rated the 6th best KPD in league in Player Ratings.
Will AP ever play again?

I would say that’s Hamling’s biggest fault as a defender. He’s so defensive minded that it works against him, Pearce for all his kicking woes at least provides some run and carry, Hamling doesn’t.

Agree. Gotta be able to defend and attack.

Have people become more open to the idea of Pickett coming here? He was decent last night and there's nothing wrong with having some good depth, he'd be an upgrade on a few guys.
I’d be surprised if it’s entertained by the club, goes against everything JLo has said about bringing in players in regards to age demographic.

Ethan Hughes has grown on me. Was never a fan but he has done well lately. Hoping he can get to brad Shepperd levels for us although could get squeezed out of the backline if all available.

Pearce - need him in the team to play on the 200cm type talls

Logue - my pick as second tall over hamling and cox

Ryan - back to a 3rd tall role

Young - 4th tall and great intercept mark and ball user

Then it is Wilson, hughes, conca, hill or cox / hamling competing for last 2 spots. Brandon walker as the Smokey but probably not for a couple of years.

If hogan is traded and we do go for Ben brown, surely we can’t play Taberner, brown, Lobb and Darcy in the same team. Although Hogan’s mobility and pressure has been poor, so probably not losing a lot. Will definitely need to get some developing talls and the cohort will all be 28

Alright. Pre-trade period prophet calls.
Blakeley out for a third round
Schultz out for a second or third round
Hogan stays ( unless Sydney come with pick 3)
Walters ain’t going nowhere
Cripps 🤭😉

Let's agree second best defender this year.

It's about structure and ball use.

McGill was the second best spinner behind Warne. Most likely the third or fourth best bowler at the time. But you don't pick 2 spinners in a team unless its a turning pitch.

This year we had Hamling, and Pearce missed the whole season. Logue miss 10 games and Cox 5 games.

Duiman played 15 games this year but I don't count him as best 22.

Ball users
Elite - Ryan
Good - Wilson, Hill, Cox, Young,
Average users - Hughes, Logue, Duiman, Watson
Below average - Hamling, Conca
Butchers - Pearce

Defensively
Elite - Hamling, Pearce, Ryan, Hughes,
Good - Logue, Conca,
Average - Duiman, Watson, Hill,
Below average - Wilson, Young, Cox
Poor -

Intercepts Marking
Elite - Ryan,
Good - Hamling, Pearce, Cox, Logue
Average - Young, Watson, Hughes, Conca, Hill, Duiman,
Below Average -
Poor - Wilson

Match Ups
Monsters - Hamling. Pearce,
Bigs - Logue, Hamling, Pearce, Cox
Third talls -Hughes, Watson, Duiman, Ryan, Hamling, Pearce, Logue,
General forwards - Conca, Hill, Hughes, Young, Watson, Duiman, Ryan, Hamling, Pearce, Logue
Small Forwards - Wilson, Hill, Conca, Logue

As you can see, it's depends on the balance of match ups, Defensive skills, ball use and intercept marking.
Agree completely with the balance thing but there are some less tangible attributes (that won't show up in the stats sheet) you need in a team to create balance - like the ones that get you voted by your peers for the players' award. Not saying he is immovable (nobody should be) but that stuff counts plenty when the coaches are discussing team selection. I personally struggle to form a group of 7 defenders that is well balanced without him in the mix tbh - his hardness and versatility is far more valuable than is given credit.

Strongly disagree, Pearce is our best key defender and it’s not even close. You don’t need every player to be a good kick, he just needs to get it off to others in the backline - which he can do. Pearce in this JL set up will be close to unbeatable. I’d probably have Cox ahead of Hamling now though

Additionally, Hughes best 22 is a debatable but probably redundant argument (he probably should play ahead of Logue at this stage if I’m honest). He’s best 25 though.

That's the trick. If Pearce can blanket the opposition key forward our defenders can spread easier, they don't need to crowd the contest, they will be spreading earlier. We rebound faster. Someone like Hayden Young finds some space, opens up the whole field of options and makes them defend the whole field.

Then we can run more of a set play moving the ball from defense to attack.

This season we got in big trouble when opponents managed to work us into one on ones.

He certainly has some valuable Grand Final experience. Two winning grand finals in just ~20 games? That's nuts Ha.

Yes he was pretty good last night. His constant pressure caused a few Cats to turn the ball over.

Who’s the best forward, and the best fit in our forward line, out of Cox, Pearce, Logue and Hamling?

Cox, yeah he was unconvincing as a forward in years past (as a 20 year old!!) but has changed his body and probably has learnt a lot about the best forwards in the league this year. His field kicking is good and by all reports so was his goal kicking pre draft so I'd back him in to improve his kicking. Must be hard being a teenager getting run ragged around by grown men and then having to perfectly nail 2-5 chances on goal per game while being absolutely gassed. Also how many other teenagers go around taking one-touch contested clunking marks inside 50? If he plays forward he will have another breakout season imo

My prediction:
Blakely out for a late second early third, we'll say he's contracted and play hard-ish ball without letting teams walk away.
Schultz stays.
Hogan gone to Sydney or GWS, deal will be complicated.
Bewley goes for a third.

Hughes defensive efforts are elite and his courage is out of this world.

Hughes was a butcher of the ball but he has improved a lot in his area and its not a weakness or a strength.

Your point is that he is better than Logue.

Structurally Logue can play on the talls and smalls. Hughes at a stretch can take a small 2nd tall or a third tall.

My concern is that Hamling and Pearce are not great ball users.
I think only one of them will and it will be Pearce as he is well ahead in rehab.

To be honest I see Hamling having a hard time pushing Cox out of the back 6 only way is if either Logue or Cox get injured which is very possible.

Great way of comparing all our backs, but IMO Hughes, Watson and Young are good intercept marks, eventhough we haven’t seen much of Young/Watson

1. Blakely - third round (mid to late)
2. Yes to Your Hogan prediction if he is indeed traded. I’m leaning towards no trade but if he does go I agree will be complicated. Value around second round but more likely we will try to upgrade our Current second round pick.
3. Not sure about Schultz - I’m thinking he has another club with an offer of 2 years and his managers are negotiating his current contract. Expect he stays for 2-years.
4. Bewley to be delisted with likelihood of being picked up on the rookie list.

Apparently Marlion Pickett has just signed a new 2 year deal with the Tigers.

I hope Schultz stays. A hard nut, tackling machine that the opposition lets him find space. Heaps of times he has found a 5 x 5 metre space directly in front. Decent accuracy. Unlike a few seagulls you know he is going to put his body on the line when he runs out. His mate Bewley is depth. Has endurance, decent kick but just doesnt get involved. Maybe as quarters go back to 20 min he may find his worth.

Also seems very popular with the playing group, someone like him could prove valuable in the retention stakes. To use US sporting parlance he's a good locker room guy and that's important for a young team, especially one with potential flight risks. I'm definitely in favour of keeping Shultz.
