Can you name me the last hbf who at age 26 suddenly transformed into a gun midfielder? It doesn’t happen he is an above average half back who has one top 5 finish in a best and fairest but will never be a gun midfielder, our list management team has made a horrible mistake.
I’m not arguing this with you. We need speed and a point of difference through the midfield we we landed an ideal candidate. The money you quote is irrelevant because I don’t think we will ever know the details of his contract. Relax and enjoy the ride.

We were offering Shiel, Cogs and Kelly 7 year deals on over $1 mill each. This is not a panicked acquisition, this was planned from day one of the rebuild. Even better we don’t give up draft picks.

We need to give Cripps the support he needs and he is 25 so he probably has 6 years of quality football to go. Also we have to meet our cap minimum and from years of underspend we have the chance to actually acquire talent rather than overpaying spuds.

I’m 100% onboard with the strategy and super excited to have Zac onboard. Saad and maybe Oliver to go now. Happy days to be a Carlton fan!
I hope Williams can provide support for Cripps aswell but I have my doubts I have a lot more trust in settefield Walsh and Dow to provide that support than I do in Williams.

Yeah confirmed 6 years, I could make an argument that short and baker are a better combination than Saad and Williams would be yet we will be paying Saad and Williams combined anywhere between 1.3-1.5 million and the Richmond pair picked up with late or rookie picks are getting paid peanuts.
That is a big price but hopefully they can elevate the blues up the ladder , Short would be on roughly $450k and Baker would be on $300k-$350k currently but their next contracts will be higher without doubt.

Another unnecessary post adding nothing to the point.
Just say what you want to say; " I know everything and no one else knows anything" :)

That's as courteous as I can be for your endeavours. Maybe hang back from the bath water a little.

Could be but there's often someone that shows up from seemingly nowhere.
Could be Honey....or Philp.
Could be someone we draft in his first year, if we aren't so cavalier with our picks.

We all have opinions Harks

You think we will lose best 22 players, because they can't play their preferred position, or how do we fit all these mids in

Now you are suggesting a bunch of kids will dislodge starting 22 players, yet we can't debate it?

You must think your opinion should pass through unvetted
Harker said Saad, Williams + 1....not 3 kids though?
Surely you have Saad and Williams in your best 22 come round 1? So that's at least 2 names which drop out.
Don't think it's entirely unrealistic for one of the other younger players he mentioned to play round 1 either.

Saad replaces Simmo

Williams probably pushes Murphy to the FP, who replaces Betts

Who replaces Newnes, Gibbons? A couple of kids that have yet to fire a consistent shot?

I doubt it
Will Newnes come under pressure? Getting Saad frees Willo to play wing where he should get an extended run at it. So perhaps indirectly Saad replaces Newnes.

Potentially

We know Teague's modus operandi, playing mature, consistent output players. Sure that will change in time, but can't see it early in the year

Next year feels like the first time that we are coming out the other side of the rebuild and it’s all systems go from here on out. The seniors are in a very healthy position and the standalone reserves system is bloody exciting.

The stand alone reserves will do wonders for the development of our kids. Both seniors and reserves will have the same game plan to work with

Zero chance it is a 1st round compo unless the Lions are insane enough to give Daniher a 5 year, $800k contract.. Most likely to be end of 1st

You forgot AFL making the criteria up as they go 3 year contract and they get pick 7 = interesting
Don’t think Brisbane are going to pay 800+ for a player that hasn’t played much in 3 years should have been end of round 1 at best

Contract length doesn’t matter. They have clearly negotiated his contract to be paid over three years instead of 4-5 to make sure of band 1 compo. No doubt if he extends it’ll be on minimum dollars.

Already confirmed that Essendon won't match.

They should all be under pressure and even at this stage I have only 14 or 15 players I can deem as definite starers.
6 years ago the first ~18 were so easy to pick and not necessarily for the quality of the players on hand, but because there wasn't much underneath.

Docherty Jones Plowman
Saad Weitering Marchbank

DeKoning Cripps Williams
Walsh Setterfield Williamson

Martin McKay Fisher
McGovern CCurnow Betts

SPS Murphy ECurnow ******

Problem with that team though, is that we don't have a relief ruck-man, so that will have to change.
Betts will likely start if contracted. Debatable whether he should but......

Senior players not included - Casboult Newnes Newman Gibbons
Young players not included - Dow O'Brien Stocker Cuningham JSilvagni Honey Kemp Cottrell Philp

I thought it was hard to put forward a best 22 last year. Going to be a lot tougher this upcoming one.

it’s also good to have some depth which Newnes can provide if he’s not first picked. Similar to Kennedy. The very good teams bat well outside their first 22 and other than the small forward area we are building quite well into the top 28-30 on the list imo

ECurnow may want a look in.
Reckon the club (Teague) will be desperate to get McGovern into his forward line.

Not going to be easy getting all involved, but again....the player who I see surprising and given opportunity may be Honey.
There's going to be someone....

If we do take another player on, you can bet he'll somehow become a starter.

Menegola goes onto a wing freeing up Walshy to go inside. Sexton should take the spot up forward off Eddie or release Fisher.

But yes cap wise someone would have to go out.

We'd all treat things differently, but I wouldn't go all out for a Premiership assault next year.
We have to make the eight at worst and finish top four at best....if a miracle happens though, it happens, but unlikely.

We're yet to find what works best for the whole by way of game-plan, the execution of it, what we have on the list and how to set ourselves up for sustained success. It was never in our plans to reach for 28-30 year olds, so I doubt it will start now..

I know everyone is excited at getting a brand new toy but 6 years for Zac Williams at 750- 800 thousand plus is a terrible move, no player should ever be given a 6 year deal let alone an overweight half back flanker.

He will be the new whipping boy for our supporters before the end of his first season through no fault of his own because he would be crazy to turn down that money, 750-800 thousand is gun all Australian midfielder money he will never be that player.

The new list management team has panicked just to be seen as getting someone through the door and if pick 8 is involved in any way for the Saad deal they would become the laughing stock of the league.

Unless it's a front loaded contract being used to manage our minimum player payments.

We have a young list meaning a lot are on low salaries. The very worst thing we could do to meet out minimum player payments is pay players we already have extra just to get there.

Player salaries nearly always only go up. For example we could meet our MPP by paying cripps and McKay an extra 400K each. Terrible move. Those guys will progress to dearer contracts every time they sign. Meaning McKay will go from 900k to 1M for instead of 500k to 800K for example.

Could be a necessary thing. If we played our players what they are worth I feel we would be well under our MPP which you can't do so it's best if some individuals are overpaid to get them here and front load them so Williams payments may be somewhat insignificant in a few years.

I don't see evidence we are panicking at all. I believe we opened our cap right up and now we have to fill that space. Spreading that salary to others who we don't have to creates a mess with cap pressure down the track as we see with clubs who have to pay players extra to keep them. IMO we are spot on and still have room to move someone like Oliver and Saad in, our cap management is bang on.

These quick, strong bodied, competitive kids we picked last year will be good when they build endurance.
