Not sure if people are saying no way, just don’t overpay. Especially given he has dropped off a touch. 13 first rounders is an excellent example of hyperbole though.

Completely reasonable to not want to overpay. I'm in the get Papley camp myself but hope the club look over all other options before making what will be a big investment.

What I cant stand is those completely disregarding his talent. He is an elite small forward of the competition, he is a massive improvement on what we currently have, he fits the age profile perfectly and he has shown he wants to buy into what we're doing.

The same people will be in the Papley thread early November praising the move. Because it will be a great move, and I know this because we have shown we won't overpay for him and we'll do whats best for us.

I remember sitting on the couch as the timeline ticked over and thinking, “Shit, we didn’t get it done.” Quickly followed by, “F***ing *.”

Gutted the trade didn’t happen but strengthened by the notion that we didn’t throw out the bath water to get it done. Strength in SOS (or whoever).

Would love Papley in Navy Blue, can manage if he isn’t.

Knowing we'd get Martin a few weeks later for effectively nothing made it easier.

I agree he is not the be all and end all, but would be so pleased if we got it done.

Him wanting to come to us and us satisfying the swans for an in contract player are 2 completely separate issues.

If we were a top 4 side, sure pay overs. We are not though
Maybe adding a quality player that suits us in favor of more kids will help get us there though.

I just feel we will get burned again and it will seriously p1ss me off. Apart from selling the farm for a forward pocket, Papley is not a team player. He is very much about himself. Very much another McGovern.....don't say I didn't warn you lot.

Has more goal assists than any player on our list in 2020 other than Eddie, and more score involvements than anyone on our list in 2020 other than Cripps.

North are practically a carcass, anyone decent we could pilfer from there??

I reckon they'll be desperate to hold on to as much of their young talent as possible, though it will be interesting to see if they decide to kick-start their rebuild as we did with Menzel.

Think you’re probably right, J

Looking at their list atm and I don’t see a great deal I’d be keen on anyways...

They have a few good kids coming through but nowhere near enough, some very good older players, and not much in between.

I'd be keen on some of their kids who they won't give up, whilst their older players are too old to hold any real value.

Brown should be moved on and they'd get an OK pick for him. Not from us though.

The only realistic experienced player I'd be even slightly keen on is Polec, and only because I reckon they'd be open to paying him to play for us. Not all of his contract, but a serious chunk of it.

They are in real trouble and need to be brave with their list management over the next few years, that's for sure.

The bolded is bang on

Really tough spot they are in, Shaw needs some help badly

I think Norths in real trouble, not just as a team but as a club. As bad as we have been for big portions of this century you always knew that if we started to put it together we had a huge supporter base which would become energised again. We certainly got a glimpse of that for a short time a few years back.

North just doesn't have that and I don't see how they go about growing their base. The only thing they have going in their favour is that the AFL has a vested interest in keeping them alive at this stage, outside of that I struggle to see anything in them.

Running and performing at high standards in AFL requires both athletic ability and skill. Just because Dow doesn't seem to have the tank for F/T midfield duties today - doesn't mean he won't or can't develop one over the next couple of years - the real call is not on him now- but what the coaches think of his commitment to getting better where he needs to and that is easy to see- run both ways and learn to tackle your opponent. None of us are in a position to make that judgment call.

His ordinary field kicking atm - that is probably as much to do with lack of aerobic capacity as skill. Dow isn't alone in needing the time to develop - it is all on him to do the extra work required to get to the same running standards as blokes like Gibbons/Newnes/Cottrell. If Dow could tackle as well as Setterfield he would probably be getting more game time - as Setterfield has his own TOG limitations - same as Kennedy.
JAB you are spot on. It would be interesting to see what the TOG is for the likes of Murphy Newnes and simmo is. There has to be recognition that these older guys are taking the pressure off these younger players. We look at Walsh and say " why can't they ?" but the reality is that SW is a freak.
Anyone wanting to retire these guys isnt looking at the full picture

North will move to Tassie .... that is their survival

So you think giving the swans 2 x 1sts is the right thing to do?

We aren't wanting to hit the draft but we wont just burn picks for the sake of it.

We have progressed so much in 2 years and yet people want it to be faster, I don't get it. We have gone from (% wise):
- 2018: 59.3%
- 2019: 84.5%
- 2020: currently 97%
The improvement has been great and as of next year, the kids excuse is no longer.

I would be happy to walk away from any deal which could really hurt the club by overselling. Yes the future is now, but sustained success is far more important.

I'm a fan of Papley and believe our 2020 1st is all he is worth.

If we walked away from this trade period adding Williams, Graham, Witherden and Caldwell and still hold onto our 1st, Would it not be an extremely good outcome? I'd be very happy if our 1st was used in the draft.

Let's face it, if you think we should be winning a premiership in 2021, you are setting yourself up for failure. We are a year off and that's due to the rebuild/reset we have taken. The plan was always go hard at the draft for 4 years (done). Keep our options open and draft or trade for people that will make us a better team to ensure sustained success (doing).

This was always going to be a 7 year process (as mentioned by Andy Maher in 2019 on "The Carlton Show" podcast).

The list we have built is solid. A few cracks, but overall, a very solid outfit that has required growth, leadership and patience.

It's now time to enjoy the fruits and make decisions that will continue to strengthen our team all across the park, not just in one area (Because there are more than just 1 crack).
