No. Why does that mean outsiders taking over parties is inherently a bad thing? Of course, you can use Trump as an example but Bernie has moved the overton window to the left. Isn't that something you should appreciate - despite him being an outsider?

He is not taking over the party though. That would involve joining it and contributing to it

He wants the party support, volunteers, infrastructure, and money for the general campaign . Yet he wants none of the responsibilities in developing policy, raising funds, and providing leadership within the party.

I've found most of this conversation very interesting(and entertaining) and mostly respectful. Neither of you are going to change each other's opinion.

I was going to reply earlier but decided not to butt in. This is what I had written, but didn't post:

I understand that but Crow54 is hardly a card carrying Democrat so it should hardly impact her opinion.

None of us are, but it doesn't mean we should cheerlead for any outsider to take over established parties

Technically I'm a registered Democrat since I requested a Democratic ballot in the last Presidential election. And I'm still on the DNC's email list. And I've contributed to a Democratic Primary candidate.

I've already stated my opinion of Bernie switching from Independent to Democrat to Independent to Democrat to suit his purpose - get his agenda out to the public in a way he never could if he were a true Independent. I like a two party system, otherwise you get riff raff elected like The Shooters Party and The Sex Party and the multi faceted parties in Europe. That may be OK for a parliamentary form of government, but not for a three equal branches of government like the US. Just wouldn't work. Bernie has had three years to form his own Bernie Socialist Party, but he chose not to. The Democratic Party at this stage has moved leftward just as it has moved rightward at times. And that's a good thing. It is a centrist party overall, not a party of extremes. Giving Bernie credit for moving it to the left might be true, but to someone who has voted in 11 Presidential elections, it's just another swing of the pendulum. I'll vote for anyone who is listed as a Democrat on my November ballot. Anyone. I might not be thrilled about it, but I'll do it.

Do you think it makes him hamstrung and beholden to the DNC in any way ?

Hamstrung, maybe. I don't really believe he's radically socialist enough for it to really affect his policies. Either that or he's cognisant enough to know that pushing genuine socialist beliefs will be intolerable to most normies.

If he was to be elected, which is obviously less likely given his health issues, then he might be more beholden in order to push his policies through but that's harder to say hypothetically.

My understanding is that the party systems of the US aren’t as strict as here. So while Bernie is an independent he’s the endorsed Democrat candidate for Senator in Vermont, and he caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate. It’s a different system (hence why it’s much more of a non-issue than if, say, Andrew Wilkie stood as Labor leader).

I’m sure you’re all much more grateful for him trying to win the Democratic nomination than if he stood as a third party independent candidate in the election and split the progressive vote. You don’t have to support Sanders, but so many attacks on him are just petty and silly, by people who should know better.

a) Plenty of registered Democrats supported Trump at the last election
b) Someone taking a different tack on one policy area to the rest of the candidates doesn't suddenly mean they should be in the other major party.

It doesn't seem strange or complicated - she wants out of foreign wars (big part of Trump's pitch) and has called out the DNC on many occasions (likewise). The fact that those positions are now so rare among her opponents is what should be considered strange.

Yup. Apparently she should be running as a Republican because she's the only one who refuses to be distracted by the impeachment sideshow. Ie the only adult in the room. The MSM are never happy with an anti-war outsider, which doesn't help her either.
