How the hell do the swans not have a top 5 academy kid?
fear not, Collingwood have a top 2 father son and Western Bulldogs look to have a possible top 5 father son this year...oh and who would bet against the AFL giving a front ended PP top North this year...all is right in the AFL world

As well as some additional picks for Gold Coast...
Don't be surprised if we actually end up with the 10th best player available by the time we get to our draft pick.

Was playing half back mostly until moving into the midfield the last couple of games where he's been a revelation, a real workhorse with neat skills around the 183 - 185cm and 80kg. Another Horsham lad.
Vic Country rep at U16's.
Will be interesting to watch his midfield development as the season goes on.

son of shane who played for port and geelong. Not sure if he played enough games for either side to be father son.

Yup, we're outperforming all expectations. That said, if we did end up with pick 9, it's off the back of rolling the 1st and 3rd team on the ladder. We haven't been that crash hot against teams below us at the moment.

We got pick 1 last year, and there is no guarantee we don't get stuck for a year or two at this point (or regress next year).
I think we'll end up roughly where we are right now - around pick 7/8. I did a rough reckoning of our remaining draw and the teams around us and we'll probably keep pace with Freo, fall behind the Bumbers by a game and move slightly ahead of teams below us.

Pick 7/8 might still give us a chance at getting Roberts given his recent injury but it does mean our r2 pick slides a bit. Outside of severe injuries or players' fitness falling off a cliff, I don't think our picks will get better from here on, unfortunately.

For each club, the first set of numbers are games against teams that are: weaker (so should win against), about equal (so 50-50 wins), stronger (so not win many).
This is followed by:
* the number of games I think the club will win from the remaining draw,
* the current games won/percentage of the club relative to us, and
* the result of the expected wins.

Was listening to Road to the Draft today and Cal actually raised a pretty interesting point (even if he did immediately shoot it down).

At the completion of the bye rounds there has apparently been some questions raised about the AFL readiness of the Vic kids from the 2020 draft vs the Non Vic kids. Obviously there is a multitude of reasons why 1st round players are or are not getting games (injury, team strength, afl readiness/development), but even if its not conclusive it still makes some pretty interesting reading.

Regardless I think it will be worth tracking this season to see if any trends emerge, especially if the VIC kids from this draft lose any more games to COVID restrictions.

As it stands (and not taking medical sub games into account);

They are overpaying players to stay or to come. Cochrane said last night also they have cap issues.

What a mess.

Signing blokes like Rory Atkins and Brandon Ellis to long deals is not helping

Who'd have thought.

Ellis is your prime example of a decent player made to look better by the system he was in. Atkins... Well I was always a fan but 5 year ?!?!

Question as I dont really understand the draft points system...but if the Pies select Daicos does that mean basically they wont have any more draft picks this year? Same for the WBs with Darcy?

The other issue is they sign Brandon Ellis and he's practically their best player overnight. Definitely top handful. Same with Hugh Greenwood.

How does a list even get that bad?

Pretty much, if a player gets bid on in the first round which both look likely to be, the matching team (eg. Pies for Daicos) gets a 20%. On current ladder position the pies have a total of 1623 points. To match the possible bid at pick 1 they need to have 2400 points (3000 points - 20% discount) or they will go into deficit next year.

Wouldn't have helped them this year. Academy picks can not be matched now in the first round. Only father sons can.

1 year after we miss out on JUH, but at the moment it looks like a blessing in disguise.

GC are we in a lot of trouble. They need decent experienced players. Ideally they trade out pick 3 for multiple first rounders, they then trade out those 2 firsts and their priority pick 19 for 2x or 3x ready made players.

Their salary cap is apparently bursting so it makes it hard to trade in guys worth first rounders. They might just go to the draft again.

I'm very surprised the AFL didn't give them some salary cap concessions along with the extra picks they got in 2019.

They really needed extra cash to lure competent mature players from other teams. They will never get to trade in guns but hopefully their draft picks will turn into them. Extra picks alone were never going to be enough.
