Ryan O'Connor might not have made the cut but he's certainly no midget. Poholke was also drafted in the last 5 years, again may not have made the cut but he's 186cm. Gollant was a defender/midfielder when drafted as well if we're splitting hairs.
It was tongue in cheek but in saying that
O'Connor almost token effort with bigger body mid.
Poholke was 6 drafts ago.
Gollant bit like Cook more wing/flanker

Dawson, Cook, Hately does compensate alot in my view.
Even if Hately doesn't make it getting these 3 in the past 2 years changes team dynamics a lot moving forward

I really happy with this year's off season.

Trade/Free Agency=
1) Lost only Kelly
2) Got Dawson,
huge upgrade on list

Draft=
Did not play it safe, went for pure talent dispite the height & Victorian backlash.

Rachelle & Thilthorpe could form one of the most dangerous forward lines in a few seasons time.

Soligo & Taylor could be anything and we won't know until 2022 when they get some games under there belt.

Are draft rebuilding could be done but we may have set ourselves up with a talent list good enough to take advantage of playing the trade game.

Ben Davis= not as bad as you think as we lost Kelly and he can cover depth in this role for next to match payments.

I think you're doing Twomey a disservice there, looks to be around the mark to me, SA's Adam D'alioa, Koby Ryan and perhaps Isaac Keeler would be around the mark but looks a pretty good shot at it this far out.
OK, so 4 of his 10 players to watch from last year (2 of 5 Vics) made the top 10 draftees this year (which is pretty good that far out) and 7 of the top 10 picks this year were Victorian despite COVID interruptions. And he picked the top 10 in his mock draft. So he clearly knows a fair bit more than me about draftees.

But it does still look Vic centric. Kobe Ryan the stand out omission, but A'alioa and Jed Hagan both did well as under agers in the U19 games and could have got a mention as well as (or instead of) some of the lesser Vic boys.

Happy to concede if you agree with his list.

Don't forget securing the services of Mr Darren Burgess, I know it will take time to see but having a proper AFL quality fitness/high performance team will do wonders for our team.

Big problem there is they were all gone before our pick 33 bar Blake Howes, Rachele as you will see is Speed and Power personified, don't be fooled by the 180cm he plays tall.
Do you think Ned Long might have been worth a late pick by us? He looked good in the games he played before getting injured this year and is a genuine big body with real midfield potential at AFL level from what ive seen. I don't think every midfielder needs to be big to be good but i do think every good midfield needs at least one big strong starting midfielder that can assert themselves physically in big games or when the teams losing to get on top in the middle and be a match winner. Hately needs a massive breakout year if he's the big midfielder were going with

I'm not as bullish on the last 5 years as some - while we've found some value squad depth types, we've failed pretty badly at finding the first blue chip, match winning midfielder to be on our list since Patrick Dangerfield left, and that's a significant issue given the picks used and the ladder positions we've finished in during the period.
Agree 100% with that!!

Actually reminds me of Joel Selwood a bit the way he hunts , tackles and handballs out of congestion

just makes me wonder where Berry ends up playing
Not sure we should worry about that yet.

Get as much quality in as we can and see which way the talent order starts to settle.

OMG that sport show has got worse. Hadn't listened to it in a long time but damn.

There was an old guy who rang up the sports show to complain about the crows drafting victorians and comparing it to Freo and West Coast drafting WA talent.

Firstly: It's a professional sport. Any club chasing to be elite, has to select the best players available for the position they need them. If they don't then thats incredibly amateurish attitude in a professional landscape.

Secondly the retention rate argument: If you sacrifice drafting interstate talent out of fear of losing them then you are running scared and not battling the culture issue that created the retention problem. Western Australia have just had a good run of producing top talent and arguably it was Victorian, QLD and NSW clubs running scared at the draft table from WA players, which allowed the best talent WA had to offer to slide directly into Freos picks. I have no problem whatsoever with us drafting Victorian players. At the end of the day, it means we are drafting the best talent available.

Thirdly: I can't help it think this SA first mindset stems from the 90s glory days where 70% of the squad was SA based talent.
I think it goes back a lot further than that.

If you look at the past its pretty clear that we do have an issue with retaining our better performing interstate players. Its also clear that the loss of those players has set us back significantly. So the solution is "lets take SA players" I agree that this can reduce the loss of talent but it also means that we lose the opportunity to get elite players into the club. I believe that there is a element of truth in selection SA based players and it should add weight when we make our selection. But it shouldn't be the major consideration. Lets look at last year McDonald vs TT. For me both you couldn't go wrong with either player. So add in the fact that TT is local and that would have been where selecting a local is a wise thing to do. But to overlook a Dangerfield because he is Victorian would have been a bigger mistake. Even though we only got a few years he did bring us all a level of excitement and great exposure to the club that in itself can attract other players to the club.

Pick the best player available for our needs and yes if all things considered are close then use the benefit of a local player influence the final decision.

Ned Long has such a small sample size and he's nor blessed with a lot of speed but very surprised he didn't find any takers from late 2nd round onwards with his aerial ability and goal kicking ability, Hawks look to have got themselves a bargain. Big bodied contested football beast Kade Dittmar was another I felt sure would find a home late/rookie but missed out.

I would have thought putting Davis back as a strategic mistake. We could have asked 1 of the non picked players out over summer.

After round 23 we had the following picks and I have aligned our draftees against the picks.

Pick 4 (6) Rachele
Pick 23 (25) Taylor
Pick 37 (39) Soligo
Pick 59 (65) Nankervis
Pick 63 Pass

One way to look at it is we have traded Kelly and a future 3rd for Dawson.

Another way is we only handed over Pick 25 for Dawson and got a huge slider in Taylor only costing Kelly and future 3rd.

The sum of all parts says on paper this is one of the best trade/draft periods we've had for a long time

Couple from left field for you, I reckon there's a couple of Tassie Devils that might make their mark next year Ryley Sanders and big bodied defender/midfielder Lachie Cowan going on their under-age games for the Devils.

Rhett Bazzo, I'm aware of his personal circumstances which meant interstate clubs did the right thing and let a WA team pick him.

Should WC have also kinda done the right thing and taken him at 31?

Brady Hough might not have been there at 37 but they knew Bazzo would be. Who was really higher on their talent order?

Feels a little like WC might have gamed the situation when other clubs were acting in good faith. Maybe they were just sticking to their talent order, we'll never know.

Can't say we have failed yet.....

Pedlar is the player that can be that burst and power player, he has only had one year in the system

Whose the **** who rang the sports show complaining we didn't get draper and then telling the world that olgivie should have done this and that. I know this is a wild accusation to throw out ther but this guy clearly just went on height and never saw any of them play let alone draper.

Looks it’s going to be pretty hard to work out.
Plenty of candidates.
