I vaguely recall another when Port finished 5th and lost to 8th somewhere in the 2000s.

So as of this year, Ken Hinkley has coached more games than Neil Craig.

Craig in his seven completed seasons at the Crows had five finals berths for 3 wins and 6 losses, including 2 prelim losses, 1 semi, 2 elimination, winning 55.4% of his matches.
Hinkley in his eight completed seasons at the Power has had five finals berths for 5 wins and 5 losses, including 3 prelim losses, 1 semi, 1 elimination, winning 57.9% of his matches.

I guess Hinkley has him pipped for now. Retain!

And I'll add to this in that these sorts of issues are why Port supporters massively overrate their list (and instead blame anything and everything at Ken Hinkley).

"We have the best list in the league".

No Port, you don't have the ****ing best list in the league when your number 1 choice to take on the opposition's best key forward is Trent McKenzie.

When they traded out Dougal Howard they completely failed to get in a lock down key position defender and have been working with a makeshift defense ever since. They traded in Aliir thinking he was the solution but really he's just a very good intercept defender who, if shut down (likely in finals), causes a structural nightmare as the rest of their defense can't actually defend.
