I can’t help myself but make this post. The Advertiser article today spends time describing how plenty of supporters left the ground well before the end of the game.
Now, They have a mantra they live off through a massive statement at the start of every home game. It goes “Never Tear Us Apart”. They sing this with their arms aloft in some religious type mania. An hour and a bit later they are losing heavily and do what?

It really is an indictment on FiveAA that they haven't blooded any younger people on the air. Or if they have, they just haven't lasted.
Maybe it's just the insular Adelaide audience?
I cringe whenever I catch Cornes and KG on the air. It's really quite sad.

I was amazed to find they were both back on AA again and thought the same thing - surely there’s some younger retired footballers they could use

far different. Port were one of the best teams over each one of those years and beat everyone. They had one of the best defences in the league, the best midfield and one of the best forward lines. Currently their midfield, doesn't rank and their forward line isn't brilliant. If anything their defence was the pillar that helped them suffocate poor scoring teams.

It’s not far different. I responded to a statement that no club had ever come back from two years of choking. Port did it for three and came back.
Not comparing that side to this side just citing an example where a side had come back from an extended period of choking.

And I do agree though their previous side was considerably better.

Bergman might be good but he's pretty vanilla.

Be interesting to know where he would sit in our team. I think you are right he is okay but won't be an elite player. I think Dursma is in that category as well, he just gets grouped with Rozee and Butters.

In terms of some of their other players, Jones will have an AFL career but will be a running defender with average disposal. Frederick is barely SANFL league standard.

I think Georgiades has the talent but won't fit into that team if they keep playing Marshall and Dixon.

People don't realise that the only reason Aliir was out of the game was because he was made to be accountable. Unlike some teams, they didn't just blindly kick down the line where Aliir could double team an opponent and run off his. They deliberately kicked to his opponent or over his head to contests behind him. Thats why he was useless. he'd sagged off his opponent all game to be the extra man down the line for the intercept mark but the dogs didn't fall into the trap. A few teams this year did that well where most didn't. Anyone who rated Aliirs cheap marking this year as special really doesn't understand the game and how bad some teams are at moving the ball. A good team has a good defender who can intercept mark, but if anything, Aliir was shown up as as a poor defender, he is just a great intercept mark. Probably why Sydney were happy to trade him.

I agree in principle, but not with Aliir being a poor defender. He's actually a very good one, if he wasn't teams wouldn't need to develop a plan to combat him.

The difference was midfield pressure. When the kicker is under pressure Aliir fills the space and picks off an intercept. And he's very good at it.

When there is no pressure, the midfield is running at you not kicking blindly, can spot up players, or at worst kick away from Aliir then this is absolutely the recipe to nullify Aliir and beat port. Knowing that and doing it though are two different things.

So I'm not disagreeing with you, I just believe that it was the total absence of defensive intensity in the midfield that allowed the Bulldogs to execute this. Add pressure (that wasn't there), Aliir goes back to doing what he does best.

Teams are bad at moving the ball for a reason.

They've blooded Bicks and even he's not hugely popular. Sports day tried Cooney but he was unpopular.
A lot of ex footballers tend to be pretty bland and uninspiring.
They got Tugwell trying to put together a career, Leith Forrest never seems to be trusted with a regular gig in Sport unless it's anchoring.

You have to play your demographic and that is the over 50’s and no I don’t listen to 5AA but I might this week for the meltdown on Rowey’s show.

They've blooded Bicks and even he's not hugely popular. Sports day tried Cooney but he was unpopular.
A lot of ex footballers tend to be pretty bland and uninspiring.
They got Tugwell trying to put together a career, Leith Forrest never seems to be trusted with a regular gig in Sport unless it's anchoring.
