No Port, you don't have the ******* best list in the league when your number 1 choice to take on the opposition's best key forward is Trent McKenzie.

When they traded out Dougal Howard they completely failed to get in a lock down key position defender and have been working with a makeshift defense ever since. They traded in Aliir thinking he was the solution but really he's just a very good intercept defender who, if shut down (likely in finals), causes a structural nightmare as the rest of their defense can't actually defend.

Aliir is their Lever. Great interceptor, and knows where to position himself. Even if he's foiled, they have Steven May who, in addition to being a quality interceptor, is a gun KPD. Port don't have an equivalent of May. The closest is Clurey, but he's wallowing on the sidelines.

They are way too obsessed with the missing piece and end up constantly damaging themselves in the long term by persuing it.

Exactly.

There's nothing wrong with having Aliir. You want him to be your best defender, intercepter, assister, setting up play from defense. You need a guy like that as modern AFL defense revolves around intercepts.

But you can't just forget... you know... to have even one lockdown tall defender in your side

Except their current crop wasn't from the tanking saga in 2009. They didn't tank in 2014-15 when they drafted Petracca and Oliver, they will still recovering from the Neeld years and working their way up under Roos.

Their midfield is so deep and strong that guys like Liberatore can have a very high influence from only 19 disposals

Clurey would have been handy tonight. He's a pretty decent defender.

Clurey is 193cm and isn't KPD and they went after Aliir but he also is 194cm and is an intercepting defender who can't play one on one so much for recruiting for needs.
