Well don't we need to free up space on the rookie list too? We are just going to retain them all?
For sure. We haven't finished with cuts. Expect at least two more. But the question was around freeing up space for the draft, and that has to come from the senior list. Don't expect Cottrell will survive the next round.

The following still waiting... Who else...?

2021
4.
Lochie O'Brien
26. Luke Parks (Rookie)
32. Jack Newnes (has he reached a contract trigger?)
39. Oscar McDonald (SSP Rookie)
44. Matthew Owies (Cat B Rookie)
46. Matthew Cottrell (2nd yr rookie)
Jordan Boyd (6 month contract)

I'm really not sure how David Cuningham retains his spot, tbh. People see something in him, that i don't, it seems.
Cunners has genuine game-breaking pace and creativity. Some of the stuff he does you can’t teach. Watch the goal he kicked to seal the game v North last year as an example. Takes the wet contested ball cleanly, spots the exit space, spins on a dollar and slots it from 50. Was starting to do it consistently before the knee too. He adds a dimension we don’t have when up and about.

The issue is Senior list spots. We have already added 6 (Hewett, Cerra, Young, 3 x ND), and we have only removed 3 (Murphy, Casboult, SPS). Betts doesn't count because he was a rookie, ditto Cottrell.

We still had to find another 3, and the only 3 uncontracted are Gibbons, Ramsay and LOB. So here we are. As of right now, we still have 1 Senior too many - and everyone is contracted except LOB. I suspect they are holding him in case we trade out a contracted player... but if we don't, he too looks to be gone.

LOB might be delisted and re-rookied, but it is conceivable that if he nominates for the National Draft, he won't be there for us to pick up. The "protected Senior-to-rookie" pathway than Kennedy took last year as part of the AFL's list reductions does not exist this year - we are back to the old rules.

I can't say I like it - Gibbons in particular is far from our worst - but for all the wailing about the state of our list, there seems to be a universal reluctance (on BF anyway) to actually part with anyone. We had to do something, and this writing has been on the wall for a long time. Ramsay/Gibbons were only ever going to stay if something catastrophic happened, like complete failure of the Cerra deal.
can't we keep LOB and take only 2 in the ND instead of 3?

It seems that we are looking to retain Oscar McDonald, at least that is what was suggested by David Trotter

I thought we could take 2 in the ND? (due to CV19)

no, must take 3 in the ND.

Uncontracted when we need the list spot, competing with players like Cunners, Fish, Martin, Honey, Owies, Durdin for a smaller forward spot.

Have no problem with the delistings definitely plenty of options.

However Cunners and Fish need to get a serious move on and Owies is fairly one dimensional tbh.

Am looking forward to hopefully seeing more of Honey and Durbin and I'd also use Martin in a pocket, can take a grab, loves a tackle, knows where the goals are and has pace. I'd give up on the half forward/mid role doesn't have the tank.

Bit surprised about Gibbo. Obviously with improvements to the list and a struggle of a year for him personally wouldn't help, but geez.

Upgraded rookies only count for 1 of the 3. You still need to draft 2 players in the ND, no matter how many rookies you upgrade.

Sure?

Meanwhile, clubs have been told they will have to again select a minimum of three players at the NAB AFL Draft after last year only needing to take one because of list reductions. The three live picks can include promoted rookies (before or after the national draft), national draft picks and pre-season draft selections.

Good luck to Gibbo. Very good decision by the club IMO. Like SPS is not even close to a top 4 club midfielder. As a small forward doesn’t have the the defensive traits at all.

Its not just about stats winning. It’s about letting the opposition escape with the ball. To the eye Fogarty/Owies/Honey put up more of a fight in that category.

Could this be the start of a smart coaching group and selection decisions. We don’t need Murphy clones.

Yeah.
OK, a PSD pick counts the same as a ND pick, but rookie upgrades can only count as 1 of the 3.

Ramsay’s delisting sits fairly and squarely at the feet of David Teague.
Ramsay had done enough to warrant senior selection at times but Teague’s bizarre obsession with Murphy and Newnes always held sway.

Sits comfortably alongside this man as modern day coaching disasters …

Ramsay was a strange one. Seemed to play some very good games in the VFL but got very few votes in the B’n’F. Got picked as an emergency and then was banished to the HBF and not really given much of a chance from then on.

I thought it was strange that we recruited a midfielder with that pick anyway. We could’ve easily taken a Riccardi instead who would’ve been a much better list fit. He was always going to be denied opportunities given we’d invested 8-9 top picks in the previous few seasons on midfielders.
