Callow seems unlikely to last until the second round.

Ash Johnson would be 50/50 if we pass on him, as GC are his other main suitor and they’re torn between Ash Johnson and taking a ruckman to replace Witts.

Well if we could somehow get Callow with our first pick and Johnson is still there when it gets to our second pick Hine and co will probably fall over themselves and call the wrong players name/number!

He had literally no clue what he was doing, so he was effectively playing as a witches hat FWD whose only contribution was to follow his opponent to marking contests. I kinda felt a bit sorry for him in the end because he was on a hiding to nothing playing in a part of the ground he never really has trying to perform a role he's never done or probably even trained for before.

I'm all for us taking as many players in the MSD as we can but I just don't think we should be placing current players onto the LTI list unless their season is actually done and dusted. Tyler Brown for instance was actually taken in a ND which puts him ahead of where these guys are, irrespective of what people think of him, and we need to ensure we give him the best possible opportunity to develop. That comes through actual games. Greenwood with his issues was potentially the closest but even he deserves the opportunity to go out on his terms if he does return to playing. Some of the stuff that gets posted here is just putrid.

Yes agree and thats why I theorised in a earlier post that might be the reason that they didnt proceed. In fact the only good reason.

With so few picks and players of interest we shouldn't get cute and guess who might be available at our second pick. Hopefully we take our number 1 target at pick 3 and worry about who to take next when that pick comes.

4 flags in his time in recruitment and list management is a bit on the brilliant side. Everyone here would froth at one flag. Hine can’t even deliver a KPF let alone a flag. Got a dud yank as a key forward. ( on 500k as well) How’s that Hine forward line tracking. Can’t kick a goal. While having ya spell get some knowledge.

I think you're getting confused between drafting (identifying speculative talent) and trading for needs from other clubs.
This is the mid-season draft that we're talking about.
2 different skills.

Wright joined in 2011, I believe, so it was 3 premierships in his time there.
Key talent had been drafted by guys like Pelchen and Buckenara (Franklin, Roughead, Lewis, Hodge, Rioli etc) and Wright brought in the mature age players to round out the list and managed the salary cap to keep them together.
But their drafting since 2012 has been pretty woeful - Hardwick? Sicily. Burton who is on another list. More recently Day looks OK. But largely a bunch of busts.

So I stand by my statement that Hine should not necessarily be told by Wright who to pick up in this sort of forum.
And Hine was largely responsible for putting the list together incl the canny drafting which has challenged in the past decade and did win a flag in 2010.

I see that others have also picked up on the distinction in the point I was making.

I’m wanting Callow but if we pass on him to take a 193cm forward that has some x factor and kicks goals and jumps on heads I won’t be disappointed.

We just need players forward of the ball that are natural forwards.

Hawthorn getting spooked and taking Newcombe at pick 2 is the only way I can see a small possibility opening up that could see us landing both Callow and Johnson.

In that scenario we would take Callow at 3 with Moyle being added to the list of ruck options Gold Coast have to make a decision on.

Whether or not they rate Moyle ahead of Johnson or indeed well ahead of other ruck options likely available at their 2nd selection is a great unknown.

The optimist in me (which is about 20% when it comes to Collingwood matters) has me thinking if we pass on Callow it might be because we have our claws in Weideman? Unlikely I know, but I'd still like to think it's a possibility!

Im hope we give Callow a chance, but forget Weideman, I hope we are saving salary cap money to go all out for Ben King.
I think he is what we need.

Yeah Hawthorn need to be really careful, because from the interview I listened to, this 3 year deal was offered by hawks, and so they more or less told him to nominate these terms. They even have his $$ worked out.

There was an article in The Age yesterday which stated that if Stengle is overlooked in the MSD, anyone can still add him as a DFA but it would have to be for a year rather than 6 months.

Definitely possible. Though everyone is pretty confident North are using Edwards.
