I thought the McCallum pick was friggin obvious. The only real choice for a tall defender was Jed Adams. Most people would have considered that a stretch and a risk as he's been injured for much of the past 3 years.

Im happy with the project talls, but they are long shots with the odds stacked against them.

That would be sound logic if this board wasn't the undisputed no.1 board on bigfooty for scorched earth style melting. There's daylight between this board and the next worst board for melting at the slightest thing.
“Slightest thing”

Being things that would have seen a coach and board marched out the door years ago.

What were consistent melts over again?

Gee only

Backing of a historically bad coach

Repeated selection issues that cost us time and time again

Sticking with an undersized defense despite it burning us time and time again

Selection policy burning talls in favour of smalls that were set to be delisted

“Smallest things”

Of course our fans are going to have some kind of ptsd and flinch whenever port moves. We’re not goldfish.

18 clubs passed on Phillips and the premature bed wetting morons yesterday would have been totally fine if we picked him up with our first pick because he's "tall".
18 clubs passed on Tim Kelly, Liam Ryan, Jai Newcombe and any number of other good players.

Of course some of the melts are warranted and fair but most are an overreaction.

Build the pressure up, consistently over time, and the reactions will only get more and more extreme. We're in the club's longest period of drought of all time, consistently setting new embarrassing records, we've pissed away the momentum of AO switch and have the longest serving, most unsuccessful coach of all time.

There's some fair reasons for our supporter base being 'on edge'.

In my life time this is the lowest ebb I've ever seen the club, by a long, long way. 2011, 2012, were laced with far more hope.

after the draft

Mattaes Phillipou shoots down Dodoro after not picking him. with the following comment "I hope Elijah’s a good player" :D:D:D:D

it looks like Phillipou (atm) will be staying with the Saints ... he has also asked for Danny Frawley's number 2 guernsey (which has been retired for a while)
his career will be interesting to watch atm

Loved his dad hopefully he has a good career... Prefer it to be at port obviously but we can't have them all ... The Vic's would melt...

We're very twitchy, as we should be, because we hate this unfamiliar long term state of irrelevance, this apparent tolerance for mediocrity, we hate that more than pretty much all other fan bases.

Younger fans did inherit something truly different. Older folks were spoiled by astonishing (to others) SANFL performances over decades. I recall the angst among adults after the 1976 SANFL GF disaster, would we ever "win" again? A 12 year drought FFS, finishing below 3rd twice, even missing finals once in that time, the sky is falling! I also remember how much relief I felt in 2004. Nearly 20 years later that's the first thing that comes to mind. It springs from the same source. By nature we're intolerant of irrelevance or mediocrity. Blowing 2004 like, well... the Saints did would be the most Saints like marker-of-irrelevance thing we could have done. Especially after the previous terrible underachieving season finishes. Even "allowing" for missing Primus and Francou in late 2004. Not that we'd do that in our heads.

We also hated that unique feeling of nearly going under, or nearly being taken under, if the SANFL plotters had had their way back in 2011-2012. I just don't think a long dose of deeply frustrating nothingness is worse than an existential threat coming to the boil.

We'll keep melting more than others, some will be unreasonable, that's OK. Every fan base has their character. I mean the rest of them are all delusional, right (jokes)? As long as we're not ripping ourselves apart bad-Richmond like over it, I mean the manure parody Richmond that became Richmond-Ninthmond that finally... recovered... after several years with Hardwick. From competition heroes to utter zeros "up" to long mid table irrelevance then finally... Yes you need to "sack the no hopers" to cross that gap and we're stuck with one in particular, but hopefully not for much longer, and that gives me hope. I also like that comment here (who?) on our drafting looking more like a long term plan rather than a quick fake fix of flankers*. In no way are we at our "lowest ebb" as a club.

*tiny attempt there to circle back to 2022 draft chatter ;)

Out if curiosity, with the picks we had, who would've done something different? Perhaps Lemmy at 36? If we took Lemmey at 36 then we probably wouldn’t have gone Scully for our next pick or would we have?

Still think it’s funny that Melbourne had the top 2 picks of the 2009 draft, yet we had our own Jack(son) Trengove, traded in the original Jack Trengove, and now drafted our own Tom Scully.
Any Max Gawn rookies out there?

I'll disagree with your last point, it's easily the worst and most hopeless position I've seen our club in. Stuck in a mid table, stale, depressing, boring, mediocrity accepting rut, after 18 years since success with no end in sight, with a board and coaching staff we are powerless to change that are breeding this issue.

To the first point, I remember how it felt in 1991, when on the back of 3 premierships, the world was ending with us finishing 5th.

Hopefully this is him trying to tank his future trade value because if this is him naturally then yikes.

2011 was horrific, that was the definition of hopeless that year.

We are a chance next year. We were lucky just to be competitive that year.

A 10 goal flogging at home to the 10th placed dogs was celebrated because butcher kicked a few and it was an improvement on the 138 and 165 point losses we had the 2 weeks earlier.

No one turned up to games and we had embarrassing major sponsors.

On the verge of folding.

Yet you think now is easily the most hopeless position the club has ever been in?

Nope, no changes? Just a premature melt after our first pick then.

1st Munkara
2nd Phillips
3rd Marshall/Scully
And wish we never extended McKenzie or Williams. So we could leave a list spot for rookie (Scully/Marshall or K.Ryan) and a pick in mid season draft!
