List Mgmt. 2024 AFL Draft

This is a link to the player draft rankings mid this year. Funny how opinion changes in a few months. Our 3 players were all top 15. Might end up being a stunning draft for us.

What was the GC deal in your fantasy land?

Gold Coast gave us Jack Lukosius, Rory Atkins 😂😂😂, picks 29 and 50.
We gave them pick 39 and a 2025 future first.
Now with Houston
Collingwood gave us pick 13 Richards and pick 36
Remember they got pick 13 for Noble.
So in essence they got Dan for two nobody’s in Noble and Richards and we gave them pick58.
We got bent over twice.

Yes these lads that we drafted might turn out good and make us winners but we’re the ones taking the risk.
Collingwood come out sure winners.
GC get our first round pick next year and dump a useless player on our list.
He not only take’s up space but we have to pay his wage.
And our return?
A player who can’t hold a sport in a shit side like the Suns because a three time premiership coach believes he’s a lazy arse.
That’s the reality pal.

We made out like bandits then for Lukosius when you consider North gave up a F1 for Pick 27

On that basis, we got Luko, Atkins and 50 for 39

Not bad!
Thanks for explaining
Now I feel really good about that deal!

When dealing with two clubs it’s two deals.
We could have just as easy done the GC deal got Lucko and told Collingwood to fk off.
Haha ... It wasnt two separate deals ... for God's sake! It was symbiotic, with each club needing something off the other to allow the deal to go though.

In finality, you look at what we gave up totally, and what we received totally.

Your take on it is just shite!

What he neglected to mention was Collingwood gave up pick 36 to us and it's future first to Gold Coast and on traded 13 to us so effectively Berry, Moraes and Richards for Houston. Still a shit trade that we shouldn't have done. Probably got ****ed a little for Luko by trading our future first with nothing back, taking a salary dump with the worst possible player with no upside for genuinely the worst pick upgrades possible. All in all a bad trade but not the shit show that 240volt is claiming.

Luko for what should probably be pick 15-20 after academy bids and FA compensation I’m not too fussed with.

Might not be the best deal we could have got but in general first round picks are overrated.

Happy to take the risk at that pick.

Net result when you package it all up I’m actually a little happier with post draft than I was pre-draft.
Trade and Draft period need to be assessed as a whole at the end of both periods.
You can split and assess individual deals expecting to win with your pants down in each one like the battery makes out. 🙄

I like the little fk’d, it’s like being slightly dead. 😂

We received an over the hill player that we have been laughing at for years.
We also get to pay him and give him a list spot.
We also received a player that Hardwick (3 times premiership coach) is happy to let go.
We also received a 25 year old 9 game player that might have some potential but that’s no guarantee.
That’s basically what we got.
What we gave away is our first round pick next year and a two time AA defender.
We also received picks that might work out good or could be a flop, that’s speculation and won’t be proven either way for sometime.
All I’m saying is for me is I believe we held all the cards and should have got a better deal.
Clubs like Geelong wouldn’t have accepted this deal, that’s why they are winning flags and we are winning fk all.
You like it then goody for you.

Let it go - your heads hot and your take is poor pal

Move on
Deals done
Onto 2025

Time will ultimately tell the tale, but on the face of it, we could've potentially made out like bandits with all three of these boys picked.

Having watched the first half of the Vic Metro vs SA game earlier today, I sat down tonight to watch how our three draftees went in the Vic Country vs Vic Metro nail biter which was a cracker of a game and showed me just how good some of these kids really are. Before I get to ours, the performances of Xavier Lindsay (wow, what a game!), Reid, Langford, Armstrong, Smith, Travaglia, Tauru and Dattoli stood out. Lindsay really played a blinder, while some of Reid’s play was breathtaking. I can also see what Richmond like in Sims, Alger and Faul. Matt Whitlock was no spud in that game but had some poor turn overs late. Ashcroft, O’Sullivan and Lalor were quiet, although Lalor took “that mark”, and Langford took another goal square speccy.

Our three guys had quietish first halves but turned it on big time after HT. Berry was super in the third quarter with 8 touches and two goals, with a magnificent long set shot from 50 bringing up his third in the last quarter. It came from a great, leading overhead mark (semi-contested) from another bit of inspired Lindsay play and passing. Joe’s kick was incredibly powerful and full of clutch. Robbie could never kick that far let alone as an under 18. The other strong feature in his performance was his ferocious tackling.

Whitlock also had a major impact after HT. He took several contested marks, including two colossal grabs in the last from long kicks into 50, where he lost his opponent and flew from the side of the pack. He finished one off, but sprayed the second which could have iced the game by giving Country a 3-goal lead. Another highlight was that sublime right footed snap for goal in the third that features in all his highlight reels after a brilliant Jonty Faul gather and handpass. One criticism of Whitlow was his weak ruckwork.

Moraes clearly has elite running ability and endurance and in both the above-mentioned matches got stronger the longer the game went. He very much played a wing role and was solid enough. A couple of tracer bullet passes into 50, and another two marks deep in Metro’s forward line in the last few minutes when they were trying to take the lead. One resulting shot on goal narrowly missed from a tight angle. The other went straight into the man on the mark from an easy set shot snap near the goal line. Unfortunately it did suggest a lack of composure. Overall though a fair bit to like about him too.

Would strongly recommend watching at least the second half of the Country / Metro game for those who haven’t. It played out like a game of young superstars and was of a very high standard. Big marks. Great goals. Super tackles and team play.

I might be stating the obvious, but I think I mentioned somewhere that there's a bit of Farrell (who was also a forward at u18 level) because of his kicking power. Accuracy is a bit wayward when he goes long distance at times.

But this is the worst case scenario for Berry, he becomes a HB like Farrell which is a pretty good floor to have. He has a lot more forward craft than what Farrell did though so he'll easily make it at AFL level. If he can get to the output levels of Bayley Fritsch a few years into his career then we'd have done well. That's the type of player I see at AFL level

I think he’s a more rounded player than Farrell was when we drafted him, and has much better defensive instincts, including tackling and a better contested game. Farrell was all outside IMO and has only really developed the more honest aspects to his game in the last 2 years as a defender returning from injury.

Yeah I think the craft of Berry up forward is better than Farrell for sure and tackling too like you said. I'm on the fence about his contested game, I don't see it the same way as others on that aspect. He's strong overhead too, so all of that makes me compare him to Fritsch

GWS draft night. Bit of talk about Port in there as well.

Yeah not surprised, Hannaford was in my top 20 until the combine where he slid in my rankings a touch because of a very poor 2km time trial. Maybe GWS knew something others didn't but he's one of the prospects I'm most excited to watch go at AFL level. Like they said, a typical GWS player.

Agree with most of this.
Shot ourselves in the foot again!

But it's over now.
Trades were made. Picks were drafted.
Can't change the results.

Time to move forward and cheer on the newbies.

Rozee's biggest weakness is in the mind not the body, a guy with his acceleration should never be physically dominated (force = mass x acceleration) but he is too meek and takes short steps.
Not my type of player despite his obvious talent. Didn't lead well enough this year which was disappointing. 100% agree with your assessment, his biggest need is to improve his mental toughness & then the rest will follow.

Strong aggressive players haven’t been a priority in the Hinkley years.
If we've recruited them (Wines comes to mind) over time they have lost that burning desire to succeed. Butters is an exception to this but can't think of any others. JHF hasn't been with us long enuf but hoping he doesn't get Hinkleyfried as well.

How much of this is because he was a first year captain remains to be seen.

I don't buy into the "We love Ken" tag of his at all. He's been fed that and as a captain he has to go with it. Just doesn't seem like he's enjoying his footy as much as he did before and I get a feeling its because there's too much external noise and he's the captain now. Hopefully 2024 was a year of growth for him in that space.
Can't agree he has to go with the Ken love stuff. He could act like a grown up & talk about team performance & winning at all costs like successful captains do. This other stuff is all BS. Doesn't happen at any other club. It's all designed to lower expectations.

My point more so is that we should've focused on getting at least one KPD in so that we can have Walsh forward. Right now, we almost need Finlayson to play in SANFL as a tall defender alongside Esava and a newbie in Moss. That's a very inexperienced KPD backline unless I'm missing someone.

We just need to make sure we tape up Aliir's ankles and knees, hell just tape him up like a mummy when he plays because if he goes down for an extended period of time, our back ups are bang average at best.
Playing Findlayson as a defender could freshen him up. He's a highly skilled player & being behind the ball may suit him. As coach I would be trying this move all pre-season. Imo we've got nothing to lose & a lot to gain.
