All other selections to be held on Tuesday November 29.
The pre-season and rookie drafts will then take place at 3pm (AEST) on Wednesday November 30.

We should be avoiding drafting players with poor/suspect kicking skills. Forget the lure of potential "X-Factor" if a player keeps turning the ball over, or consistently misses easy shots on goal. In AFL simple errors can be momentum sapping and can determine the outcome of games. I would rather we get back to putting a premium on footskills when drafting.

Rumours Dons into the Pou.

I don't trust anything when it comes to those farkers. They are just as tight as us when it comes to any info getting out. They'd be sitting there hoping like hell that Tsatas slides to them. Shadow games and all that.

Players can improve their kicking, but it also becomes more difficult to be a good kick in the AFL. If they're struggling enormously with it in the U18 comps with density rules, lower pressure and a slower game they're probably not going to improve enough to become proficient at it.

I'd prefer we go with someone who is actually good at the fundamentals of footy instead of someone who has obvious deficiencies in the hopes that he might follow in the footsteps of a few extraordinarily rare exceptions to the rule.
This is pretty much what I was trying to say earlier but you absolutely nailed it. Once these kids hit AFL level the pressure goes up 10 fold so if they are poor kicks at U18 level the chances of someone being a really poor a kick getting to an AFL standard is going to be pretty damn hard. Not impossible but do really want to be burning a pick 6 on a kid that might become an AFL standard kick at best.

The Hawks have always said that they take the best available with an early draft pick so if Tsatas slipped to our pick I am sure we would take him if our recruiting team rated him best available. We need elite talent in the midfield so it would appear a no brainer.

Well if we fall down the ladder because of a lack of inside mid power , we get closer to the Harley Reid Cup. 🤣

We may not have a top end pick that will assuredly give us access to the absolute elite talents.

But just like last season we will still have access to multiple quality players that fill a need - Mackenzie, Phillipou, Humphrey and maybe even Tsatas.

Hawthorn would also consider Tsatas, should he slip to its first pick, considering the club just lost Tom Mitchell and Jaeger O’Meara to Collingwood and Fremantle respectively

Lost.... FFS they're not sets of car keys.

Must I help them do their job....

"considering the club made the well-informed and conscious decision to trade...."

Are Elijah Hewett and George Hewett brothers?

Humphrey and George would be a fantastic combo though. Some m/f rotations in that!

Having Moore, Butler, Humphrey, George and Wingard all rotating through the middle and resting up forward would cause some headaches.

I always loved it when Roughy would start in the middle and then run forward and have a huge mismatch. Poor old Caleb Daniel was caught out by this a few times.

We did it for years and then other teams started doing it - Dusty, Danger, JDG, Stringer, the Bont, etc. There's a general theme there with most of these players being explosive versatile athletes. Humphrey and George are very similar IMO.

Our very own CJ was a worse kick than Humphrey when he started, but he's managed to improve it to an acceptable AFL standard. It can be done.
To a degree. I disagree he was a worse kick to start with, and it was improved by playing in a role with more time and space to use the ball.

All that aside, we didn't use our first pick on CJ - we listed him outside of the draft altogether. You can afford to take the risk of developing an extreme weakness when you're not giving up anything, but not with so many safer options on the table.

It's going to be pretty funny if we select someone with our 1st who we haven't debated over for the last 50 pages.
I think Busslinger would cause a meltdown.

Other than that it's hard to imagine any true surprises given there have been more than half a dozen names regularly discussed for the pick. Hard to see guys like Busslinger, Hollands, Jefferson, Hayes being realistic chances.

If Tsatas is available at our pick we must take him. Baring any major character issues of course, he is a no brainer pick. Had he had an uninterrupted season he'd be making a case for the top player in the draft. If you watch his highlight videos you see how much of a natural and smart outside midfielder he is, consistently getting in the perfect position not only to receive a handball, but also to where he has a clear path to break away. I seriously think that if he transitions well to AFL game style he'll be a top 5 outside midfielder within a few years, possibly the best when in his prime.

The only issue I've seen with him is of course contested ball winning and tackling but I think that's a sacrifice we'd be easily willing to take given how talented of an outside player he is. And players like Nash and finn will be able to cover up for that anyway.

What makes me really think he'll be a star is not only is he one of the most damaging players in the draft with his run and carry, but he also is a great accumulator. Having those two traits alone make him extremely valuable and I can't see how we pass on him over players who have much bigger wholes in their games.

Having said this, Essendon really should pick him and I think they will, fingers crossed though

Yes but we weren’t using a top 10 pick on CJ. Also it is much easier to improve kicking when behind the ball and the game is in front of you

100%. Kicking is such a crucial part of the sport. I find it hard to believe that a kid who is being talked about in the top 10 and has gone through the traditional pathways hasn't already been provided specialist kicking help.

Might as well split the pick and go for 2 kids in the teens. They'll probably each also have a crucial weakness to a fundamental skill, but at least you've spread the risk.

Yeah I understand that. But bottom line is kicking skills and technique can be improved on.
They can but I thinks it’s pretty rare to make a major jump in it, we have been locking elite ball users for years and desperately need to add more good users. I’d be okay gambling on someone to improve his kicking with a later pick, not with a top 10 pick though

I have a gut feeling Essendon are taking Phillipou so I think we should take Cam Mackenzie

I don't really want us to take Humphrey or Tsatas tbh
I reckon if Tsatsas slips to us we will take him because I think he is higher on our list of players than Mackenzie or the Bear
