I'd love Barnett, but doubt he lasts to 27, was ecstatic he got to 20 for us, but well. Hustwaite more of a need than any of the medium forwards, outside mids or flankers. Key defender is less of a need than ruck or KPF, but outside of Barnett, Keeler or Gruzewski (the latter 2 probably available at 27) there's not a lot on offer there. So we may just grab one of the medium or tall defenders at 40. Hotton would be tolerable, but not what we really need. O'Hehir sounds like a half back/outside mid, again not what we need. Fine with getting someone like that with a rookie pick, as long as we grab a ruck before or after then.

Last night was exactly how the bidding system should work. We placed a bid, GWS then had to decide if they wanted to give up something of equal value to match. They could have opted not to match and taken Konstanty.

The fact Brisbane got Ashcroft and Fletcher and still were able to trade for Dunkley, without giving up anything at all comparable in value, is the real rort.

Probably my dream (semi-realistic) draft from here, aside from us somehow moving 40 up the board and us grabbing Barnett and Gruzewski somehow:

27 - Barnett
40 - D'Aloia* or whichever of the KPDs that we most rate still available
Cat A - whichever of inside mid or KPD we don't pick at 40
Cat B - Edwards

If Barnett gone (likely):

27 - Keeler27 - Gruzewski27 - Hustwaite
40 - D'Aloia* or KPD40 - Ruck or D'Aloia*40 - Ruck
Cat A - whichever we don't take at 40Cat A - whichever we don't take at 40Cat A - high risk / high reward type
Cat B - EdwardsCat B - EdwardsCat B - Edwards

* Other inside mids around 40 might be Hugh Bond, Mitch Szybkowski (likely to be gone), Steely Green.

If we really rate one of the medium defenders, ok, as long as they can actually defend, since we've got Fox getting on with age, lost COR, and ideally they can also play on smaller types given Cunningham's form and also approaching 30.

Think they need to change this bidding system a bit, my view is you shouldn't be able to match with a pick LESS than 15 spots under where the bid occurs, so for instance Brisbane would need pick 17 or above to match Ascrfoft at pick 2. These mid tier picks in the 30's are horribly over valued and have been for years. I use the pub test, if I had picks 30,31 would you trade them to me for one selection at pick 12 or whatever it equates to? Not a chance. Therefore the scale is wrong.

Talk of Demons trading up to grab the GWS pick so they can get a ruck. For those who have their hearts settled on Barnett prepare for it to be broken.

Seems an obvious trade too they have Freo's first that would be fair.

At first I thought we'd traded for a future 2nd and 3rd alone, and I honestly thought "bold, but assuming Hawthorn tank as expected that's not a bad trade, assuming we simply don't rate that many this year and rate both Academy boys". To hear we got pick 27 this year back is just delicious.

As far as I'm concerned we just got pick 27 for free. Outstanding move.

Konstanty also looks like a great fit. Not our greatest need right now, but with Ronke and Bell gone, a question mark over Wicks, and Papley spending more time in the mids, then it makes sense.

Yep, did say that prior to the draft, it's not our number 1 need but why not grab the only A grade small forward in a draft we don't rate. You are correct Paps aside our small forwards are thin, when you are sort of playing Clarke as one you know there is a slight need.

Meh, rookie listing Broadbent will do the trick.

Sam Gilbey for Pick 27.

The Tadgh for a new generation!

Yeah I'm liking one of Gibney, George or Hustwaite at 27. However the one I've wanted all along is Oli Hotton (let me dream okay). Not fussed really. I doubt Barnett lasts till 27. Even WCE need a ruck too, Nic Nat isn't young.

When he was still available at 20 and we didn't pick him, my heart turned to stone, so I've given up hope tbh anyway.

The worry is that any of the decent rucks or other talls will go late in the draft, or since we have the 2nd last pick of the rookie draft, with one of the picks before ours. If we get to the end of the draft period and we haven't picked up a ruck because "oh, unfortunately they just weren't available at our picks"...

If we have our eye on a ruck we'd like to take in the rookie draft, unless there's several and we're confident one will last, I'd just grab them with our 3rd pick. At this point we can do whatever we like with pick 27 if that was the case, though I'd be surprised if we didn't also grab a mid somewhere (Dalrymple must be satiated).

Gilbey looks a potential steal, just not in a position we need. If he had a bit more of a defensive game I could get on board.

Don't stress you will get your tall lol

We bid on a tall does that count!

Are we taking more than Edwards as a rookie? How many are we running with in terms of our list?

Considering our transition over the past 4-5 years in recruiting and the last 3 or so years in tactics, I wonder if we might be more tempted to move towards a more mobile forward line. We have 2 players in Hayward and Heeney who mark the ball as talls with their good vertical leap. Could we consider George as another player in that mould who could form part of a forward line less reliant on tall forwards.
With the disposal efficiency of our elite ball users we could make more use of medium forwards rather than bomb long to talls. Plus it takes a lot of power away from the intercepting defender types if we can just out work them.

Reckon you should have a look at his highlights - the kid can certainly tackle.

But in any event, he’s a real long-shot. My gut feel is that we might go for George, noting Kinnear’s “Logan and that’s about it” comment.
A year out with an ACL isn’t great - but we’ve shown recently that we are a club with patience for ACL rehabs.

I saw that earlier in the week and find it incredulous. They just committed 7 years to Brodie Grundy at $700k per year.
Max Gawn ain't a bad sideshow either. Do they know he is moving to Sydney next year, or what?
