List Mgmt. 2022 Draft Thread - Part I

The "experts" have said that this draft is rubbish, clubs want to trade out their top picks, only 40-50 odd picks to be taken.

Is this for real? Trust us to finally go to the draft when it's a rubbish crop. We missed the boat in the last few years, apart from the obvious academy kids.

2016: refer to 2017.
2017: Went to draft, recruitied injury prone Coffield, and spaghetti arms Clark, who is about to be traded for a 9th round pick. Fail.
2018: Went to draft , Ben King, Jack Bytel.
2019: TRADE TIME: Howard, Hill, Ryder.
2020: Went to draft , Alison and Highmore.
2021: Went to draft , Wanginen-wantmymommy-Milera, Owens , Windhager.

Its not really "finally go to the draft" its just we seem to chose better when we only have academy picks to chose from. Too much choice and we come unstuck. I wonder if we would have taken Owens in an open market.

Next years draft is always better...

The man who anointed Windhager a gun before he even finished playing his last Nab League game.

What’s your top 10 looking like old chap? 😎
In terms of how the draft will pan out? Or who’s in it?

They also said 2015 was gonna be the worst of all time. Hmm I’ll wait

It looks bit like the 2017 draft to me. A good front end but perhaps without the absolute cream of most good drafts. (Ashcroft looks the best of them). Solid up through the second round with a few surprise finds all the way through it. It's no super draft but it's a pretty even draft. I wouldn't be surprised if it's a lot like 2017 with a few top players ending up disappointing and some middlers looking like the pick of them.

Knightmare just gave our nga Sam Letreille massive raps on Twitter. Seems like a very good small forward
Much good it’ll do us....🙄

Hard to compare to 2020 and 2021 which were compromised by Covid so a lot was speculative. But the top 10 this year look as good as most years I actually like a lot of the guys rated 20 - 40. Seems like a pretty good draft to me i wouldn't fall for talk about how good next years draft might be lots can change. More than most years though I think the top 10-15 in this draft has a lot of genuine midfielders rather than players that project to be able to play midfield. Ashcroft Wardlaw Tsatis McKenzie Phillipou Humphrey Clark Hewitt all in the mix for top ten and all definite midfielders rather than a Sheezel type who is a forward that can play mid. Or for our reference Hunter Clark and Nick Coffield types who mostly played back in junior footy but were touted as having midfield potential.

I think this draft has more genuine midfielders at the top end than most drafts. Then a fair few more that will go later as well, Szybkowski Hotton, Darcy Jones, Fletcher, D'Alioa, Ginbey, Hustwaite, Hollands, Charlie Clark, Drury, Rowston lots of midfield potential in that crop. However it is light on for talls which is surprising because at this time last year all the hype was on the talls particularly the SA crop most of whom have flopped this year particularly Lemmey and Scully. But Buslinger looks at least the equal of Gibcus to me as a prospective key defender and I really like Cadman certainly a lot more than Amiss who went top 10 last year. But there is no Max King equivalent in this draft or even a Mac Andrew type athletic freak tall.

Of the depth I think it is as good as most years, reduced list sizes and the changes to Supplementary Picks and Mid Season drafts are the reasons the draft only goes to pick 60 odd now rather than the 80 odd it used to go to, not the talent. The top 40 will produce some gems then clubs will get a bit more speculative after that like most years I would love five picks in the top 30 in this draft that is really what we need to set up our list but as usual the only clubs with hands like that will be GWS and Gold Coast I suspect.

Cadman isn't King but looks pretty exciting and Jefferson is in that proper KPF style.

Ginbey is flying up the list. I liked him early but lost interest in him as others stepped up. He looks like a big man build bull in the footage I've seen and if you want a Clayton Oliver style big extractor with some burst he looks good. Guys like Hotton will be interesting. He is a could be anything type like Drury.

Still think McKenzie is our guy. Our version of Noah Anderson. Has great midfield craft even though he’s only been there for half the year. Every time I’ve seen him he gets better and better. Great size. Also really think Ollie Hotten gonna bolt to the draft.

Have you been watching full games? From the bits I've seen he looks very vanilla. What's he doing well? Anderson looked like he should go pick 1 for a lot of the year. He was a burst mid, scoreboard threat and super consistent. McKenzie looks a bit more good at everything not quite a standout at anything type to me.

Vanilla can have it’s own quality too.
You said the same about Andrew Brayshaw and put me off him.
Curse you!

And Walsh but I've said it about heaps and most were so forgettable that I can't recall them. Some were properly vanilla.

The issue with McKenzie as a top 10 pick is that he's a good kick but not amazing, he's good at getting the ball but not amazing, he's good athletically but not amazing. I think he'll be a good footballer but there is a clear ceiling unless he's playing under team instructions and not just allowed to hunt the ball.

I'd prefer Philppou over McKenzie at this stage.

From what I've seen of the kid, I'd surprised he's not talked about in the top 5 prospects.

He's also almost a full year younger than McKenzie.

192cm mid that wins it on the inside, beautiful kid, kicks goals on the run and a strong mark.

Doubt he makes it past Ports pick though surely

Me too, his kicking looks so clean. Got that laser left foot. Still love the way Humphrey hunts the ball though. Brisbane played like real ball hunters last night and it was the difference.
