Is the sport itself not entertaining enough?
Watching Adelaide play St Kilda (by way of example) isn't particularly engaging by itself. Having the villain there to boo just adds that little something.

Of course, if Stevic is umpiring, then I have my preferred villain. But sometimes you just need to cast the net a bit wider.

New coaches who are actually old coaches. Teams you want to trust, but can't. Ageing champion Cats. Wounded Swans. A club too many are sleeping on. Those who may or may not be irrelevant. The rebuilders and contenders. Today, Patrick Stack speaks with former AFL player and current vibe merchant Tony Armstrong to get his view on some of the biggest storylines of the 2023 season

Dylan Shiel plays 200 games this weekend. Giving credence to the phase style over substance.

Foxfooty.com.au asked a player at every club ....... who’s set for a breakout year.

ESSENDON
Zach Merrett's opinion;

Breakout player of 2023 Dylan Shiel. I think the way he’s going to be coached this year, the way he’s come back, he’s extremely fit at the moment, extremely strong. He’s in a good place and I think he’s going to explode.

Shiel turned 30 last week.

WHAT ACTIVATED EXTREME HEAT POLICY MEANS FOR ROUND 1

The AFL will activate its extreme heat policy for two day games this weekend as players prepare to swelter through 37 degree temperatures in Melbourne.

The risks of dehydration will soar for the North Melbourne and West Coast and GWS versus Adelaide clashes due to the boiling forecasts.

The league has told the clubs water carriers will have unlimited access to the ground, meaning players won’t have to wait until a set shot or a score to have a drink.

Clubs will also be permitted one extra trainer to carry fluids for the games.

The quarter time and three quarter time breaks will also be extended by two minutes for the GWS versus Adelaide game in Sydney on Sunday with a top temperature of 32 expected.

Clubs are expected to incorporate the use of ice vests and fans down on the boundary to help keep players cool on the bench.

The league has told clubs it will continue to monitor the forecasts and update the allowances if necessary.

Clubs will also be permitted to use the sub as per normal, allowing teams to inject a fresh player into the game for tactical or medical reasons.

When is the sub officially named?

Hate to say it but it should have been a Cats V Pies GF.
'Should' is doing a bit of heavy lifting for a team that went 0/4 against the grand finalists.
Yeah but U know

That's like saying A beat B and B beat C so A is better than C.

We all know footy works in strange ways with how different teams match up.
Actually, no, what you're saying is that. 'Collingwood would have gotten closer to Geelong therefore are better'. They finished lower, had worse percentage and couldn't beat either team.

By that logic, North should have been in the GF because they beat a team who beat a team who beat a team.

Statistically, pies should not have been in top four. But they were

Tell us more.
Why would you like Pies to be put into the grand final over the Swans who deserved to get there? Swans beat the Pies to get to the grand final.
What are your reason/s to want to change history so that Collingwood makes the grand final instead of the Swans?
Do you want weekly scores to change too because of your reasons. Do you sit back after a weekend of footy and say X club should be awarded the points because you want that to change?

Are you just a revisionist?

Pies were so unlucky to not make the Grand Final. I mean, they didn't lead the game at any stage, got behind by beyond 5 goals at one stage too. I mean that has all the hallmarks of a team that deserved to win their prelim.
But they did not win. That is all that matters. What Ifs and Kenny Coulda Beans have been seen weekly at footy games. Those guys lack credibility at the end of the game.

Exactly what I was hinting at. They didn't win, which means they weren't good enough to get there. That is all that matters.

I agree. Collingwood are treated very unfairly by the AFL and there are many structural disadvantages that make it more difficult for them to win games of finals football.

To compensate for this I think we need a new wildcard system where Collingwood qualifies automatically for the grand final without the need to beat other teams through a finals series.
