Autopsy 2022 Grand Final

He was nowhere near it the last few games. Uncompetitive in the aerial contests, offering nothing. He may come good, still very young.
If anyone maybe Amartey should be quietly annoyed not to get the chance.

Would not have made a bit of difference though. The straight murdered us in the mids and at every contest.
The Cats demolished us like they did to Port in 2007 - they just went to town and Port, like us, were smashed across the ground. Supreme “we’ve got nothing to lose” confidence. That game is so Similar to ours yesterday. Watch it if you can, you’ll see what I mean.

At least we can take solace that no one would have beaten Geelong yesterday. Everything that could go wrong did.

I’m actually weirdly okay and I’d actually prefer to get smashed than lose by a kick

at least losing by a kick you showed up and gave some respect

club embarrassed themselves and the fans yesterday

I’d be more annoyed losing by a kick at least we were never in it. Personally I then look back at umpiring and everything

That goodness I didn't watch 2006 live aye, I was studying maths during that time.

Would have cried a lot of tears after the game as a kid. But... there was still solace of winning it in 2005 and giving us Leo Barry's GOAT mark in the GF, so theres that.

I'd strongly consider swapping Blakey and jmac.

Jmac has gives us nothing for months.

Blakey speed and footskills would be a weapon in the middle. I believe he has the confidence now to really apply himself.

Blake's ans Stephens on opposing wings will have blistering pace
JMacs best quarter of football for us was arguably in the centre square against North Melbourne. Something that should perhaps be explored in 2023.

Honestly OK with our effort. Failure was in execution. Absolutely dominated by bigger, stronger, more experienced bodies. Geelong were on and we were overawed.

Important thing is we didn't lay down in the last quarter, so I'm optimistic that this will be a learning experience rather than a backbreaking experience.

Have to feel for Swans supporters. In the end I was hoping you guys would win, mainly as I really dont like the Cats. But end of the day Cats were clearly better.

Your first sentence says it all.

My take is the Swans need to improve in two areas.

1. TALL FORWARDS

Franklin, Reid and McLean. Emg McDonald

V

Hawkins, Cameron, Blicavs

Cats just bigger, better and more experienced.

2. MIDFIELD

Swans need some bigger mids , losing Kennedy was a big loss.

Rowbottom, Florent , Goulin, McInerny are skilled mids however Geelong just looked bigger and stronger.

Again age and experience a factor.

Feel the Swans need another big bodied mid to help Warner at the coal face.

Unfortunately the Swans came up against the most experienced and well coached sides going around and they were hungry. Swans will be back but have some gaps to fill. Luckily for all of you its not as many as my team.

I enjoy your posts King but I do not give a flying * what that man has to say.

He also ripped into the Welcome to Country and the beautiful eulogy for Uncle Jack

yeah didn't hear what he said about that just saw he said we played dumb footy which i agree

am avoiding watching tv

but can also see why we wouldn't care he said it

And we have all woken up, the earth is still turning, no one died, and there is always next year. I, surprisingly, feel pretty good. And I went to ’06 & ‘16 losses as well as the ‘05 & ‘12 wins, so I do know how those who attended yesterday feel.

But we can’t change the result as much as we wish we could.

You Should see the carryon on RWO! One bloke on there is so boorish & aggressive with his criticism that if anyone disagrees with him they cop it with both barrels - he’s carrying on as if he was the only player on the ground who tried - when he was actually at home glued to his lazyboy catapult chair.

Yes we all have a vested interest & love for our club, but it’s footy, we take the great with the crap, it’s not life or death.

bring on 2023 - have loved the banter here this year (A lot more considered and civilised and you’ve been nice to this old girl- thank you) xx

The last two games to me show the club needs to have more depth that they are actually willing to play.
We ran out of legs on the season half way through the Collingwood game IMO. Half a season of manic pressure footy took its toll.

If we are to play that way, then we need to rest players like Heeney, Mills, Hickey, McInerney, Gulden, Franklin etc when they need a rest.
Not play them sore, through thick or thin to scramble for ladder position. Particularly if there is a week off before finals anyway - as it lessens the advantage of finishing top 4 - and I think we can win away from the SCG.

Perhaps Bud coming off the massive money will allow for slightly more quality depth. Or maybe it's just a matter of having the courage to rotate first team players and play the depth we have. A Taylor giving Heeney a game off to get his body right for example...

Surely cannot let Melican go without some quality KPD coming in to replace him. At the very least using up one of our first rounders on a top, top KPD youngster of not less than 195cm.

Buddy was clearly not involved at all, have some sympathy for the forwards, but he also couldn't take a mark to save himself or get involved

has been crap in 2 grand finals for us

did more for us in 2012
One of our best in 14, copped a bad knock in 16, struggled because of that.

Can't see us keeping Taylor, unless he's resigned about not playing AFL again, and we keep him as a rookie for VFL.

Drafting a KPD is crucial. Gould is next in line. I'd be taking what we can get for Melican tbh.

We were playing on a wave of confidence, once that had some doubt put it we completely fell apart. It’s actually not that surprising when you really think about it.

We played above ourselves (we all concede we didn’t expect a Grand Final this year and certainly didn’t after that Essendon game) and once the layer of confidence was removed this was exposed by a experienced, professional and clinical outfit.

Good on them, they deserved to win and we will learn a lot from the experience.

Yeah Taylor definitely isn’t a part of the answer. He should and will move on.

I wonder if living in Sydney outside the afl bubble has a negative effectc psychologically?

The club spends 3/4 of the week escaping alot of the hysteria and intrigue. Get down to Melbourne on Thursday and are thrust straight into the spotlight. Straight into the parade in front of 200k then bam it's gameday.

Vic teams that live in that bubble may get accustomed to the scrutiny and hype sooner during the week, so when the game rolls around they can focus alot better on the job at hand.

If we make a gf again if like the club to get into town on Monday and see if it makes a difference.

Just my crazy theory
It’s a good call.

I think with the GF parade the players lose any sense of routine, however we still try to keep everything as normal as possible. It’s like watching animation that is trying to look realistic, it is slightly off and makes the whole experience unrelatable, you are better off with cartoony animation.

I reckon we should embrace the GF week, get down early as you say and connect with our SMFC supporters, have open training sessions at the MCG, in the evening bond with players, coaches and support staff only.
