Laird would be a very good player in a decent team. You could play him mid or back. Not many players can do that. The bloke still has 4 good years left and is very durable. Plenty of players get moved on contract. The Hawks and powaa have a knack of getting them out. Collingwood as well. Do you think Treloar wanted to leave? I can guarantee you he didn't and they told him they weren't going to play him and he wasn't wanted. Clubs get there way if they want a contracted player gone. Wingard was exactly the same. The problem is the mediocre AFC doesn't like upsetting the apricot brigade. We should be looking at potential suitors for Laird, Brown, Milera, ROB, Smith, MCrouch, Sloane, Himmelberg, Murphy, Sholl, McHenry. The club needs to realise that our list is not good at all and they need to be bold to quickly climb up the ladder.
From the experienced group, we could certainly look at parting ways with Brown, he's got a couple of years left and not in the team at the moment.

The issue is, if you force a player out the door, regardless of being in contract, you don't get a lot for them in terms of draft capital, which is what we want. Wingard, May the exceptions I can think of.

Howard, Ryder, 10 -> 12, 18 (and later pick swaps)
Ladhams, 16 -> 12
Treloar, 26, 33, 42 -> 14, 2022/2
Stephenson, Bosenavulagi, 39 -> 26, 33 and 70
Peter Wright -> 4th round pick
Ben Brown, 28 -> 26, 33

Saw Matt Crouch and his partner announce they're expecting. I wonder if that'll make him any more eager to move back to Victoria?

I think everyone understands that contracted players need to agree; but we also understand that their preferences can and do change dramatically as and when circumstances change. If we told Smith that he has fallen down our pecking order and is no longer best 22 and he can face that for the next 1-2 years or alternatively he can go to a rising contender at somewhere like the Suns then I think at the very least he would entertain that conversation with or without a pay rise sweetener.
Then once he has agreed to terms with them, we say he's a contract and required player so ask for a first round pick for him.

But the excess salary cap allows you to go after free agents/quality trades or front ending contracts. The payoff on front ending comes later when you have plenty of salary to attract players when the team is better. I think our team is one elite experienced mid, one decent experienced KPD, a decent young ruck and a quality elite small forward away from contending for 7-10th. They just need to focus on those gaps along with good drafting.

You do have to pay 90% of the cap though, and we've already done the cap space clearance. That's why we signed Laird, ROB, etc signed up to longer deals in the last 12m or so.

I suspect we are paying the bare min of cap ATM (well, we should be) and have started to use some of that on Dawson, and probably have a decent amount lined up for players on our trade in list.

I have heard Aaron Francis is keen to return to Adelaide, could we squeeze him down back in a Doedee-esque role, or is there no need? I was shattered when Essendon picked him up, but he hasn't really hit his straps over there. I feel he could do well being back close to family and with some Burgess magic.
Essendon have a reputation for being notoriously hard to trade with.

He would cost us IMO.

I think the issue currently is that we have plenty of the 3rd tall types and not enough quality KPD's that can defend and attack. I would be targetting your Brennan Cox style player.

West Adelaide board.

Agggressively mediocre. We've got that position covered enough as it is. No thanks.

Again?

Expect him to re-sign with the Bombers again going on past events.

Isnt she from adelaide?..

Pretty sure I remember hearing that he met her when he moved to Adelaide..

Or was that Brad and his missus?..

If matts missus is from Adelaide then you’d think that would make them more eager to stay to be around her family..

Move to Melbourne and they wont be near either his or her parents because his parents live in the bush near Ballarat..

The Suns have got Budarick and Weller - both small to midsized running defenders - out with ACLs for the bulk of next year. I wonder if we could sell them on the idea of Brodie Smith on a two year deal as the perfect replacement whilst they look to come into their window? For their second rounder I'd do that deal.
All teams watch others play. GC would be looking at us saying Smith, Milera, past it, McHenry, Rowe, Murphy, not up to it etc etc

Sorry Bob, no one is buying a spud like Smith, he'd be dropped in any other team but has an AFC Gold Pass so keeps his place in the 16th team.

Why would they weant Smith when Jeremy Sharp a younger version isn't getting regular games.

Maybe a swap looking to the future.. ;)

Agree but that's a list of players that probably shouldn't be getting a game in the 16th side, and most of them with contracts for 2023?

Which club/s do you think they could get a game at?

I think we got the Thilthorpe, Berry, Rachele and Soligo picks right. Four long term players with some potential AAs in there.

We need a tall big bodied mid with skills, and more on the outside too.
Cook, Taylor and Nankervis looking pretty decent too looking to the future.

Playstation stuff. They wouldn't be interested anyway, we got our pay day when they took Atkins off our hands, they aren't getting bitten twice by us. Think that GC has finally grown a trading brain

Nope Elly is a Ballarat girl

Brittany is an Adelaide girl (Brad)

Crouch's parents live in Alfredton in downtown Ballarat.
