Can I check.

We have a player who is likely to finish high in the Doig this year playing his role in a dominant fashion, and posters are suggesting a 1 year contract; have I got that right?

In reality what we should be aware of is that he will be offered more for longer by a team desperate to rebuild their midfield, and who won't need to trade anything to get him.
100% agree. It appears that everything has aligned for Acres. Full preseason, no injuries, playing in a team structure that suits his game and a belief that as a 190cm big body he can take on anyone. 1 year would be laughed away by his management.
2 with an option for a 3rd with performance clause takes him to 30 yrs old. Caveat is that he need every game this year to be like the first 7.

In context. He has played 5 good games in 3 Years.
That’s a harsh call. He has played some pretty good games but the criticism and rightly so was he didn’t back it up.
My sauce said he was given some very frank feedback last year by Jlo and co and he like the team have responded.
All you can really ask a player to do. If they can’t respond to the feedback then move them on.

Maybe a bit harsh, but this is first time he has been locked in the best 22.

Don't want another deal like Hughes or blakely.
Fringe players should only get 1 or 2 year deals.

Acres has really surprised me this year so far. He’s become a very solid role player and is unrecognisable from the last 2 seasons where he couldn’t get a look in for large chunks of last season and quite frankly would probably have been delisted if he didn’t have a contract for 2022. The biggest difference this year has been that he has pretty much removed those squibbing efforts from his contested game and has improved his running capacity to establish a spot on the wing over the first 7 games. Still prone to the odd dump kick under pressure and it will be interesting to see how that plays out against sides like Melbourne and Brisbane, but as long as he doesn’t start pulling out of physical contests ever again I’m very happy to have him on the team. Credit to him for turning it around this year.

Regarding his contract, a two year extension would be the absolute max and a great result for him. There is only a small handful of players over the age of 24 on the list that should be contracted for longer than 2 years at any given time, and as good and all that Blake has been this year, he’s not one of them.
You should never be afraid to lose players if they and their agents start demanding terms that could compromise the success of the list longer term and the ability to retain elite players, especially when you have a deep list like we are starting to have. Obviously as a top 4 side, we can expect that some players will have offered more more money and longer terms from bottom of the table clubs. That’s is perfectly normal and how the system is supposed to work. If these guys want to take those offers let them go. You don’t compromise the overall list strategy to keep role players happy.
The Ethan Hughes 3 year deal looks absolutely ridiculous now for example.
We have to try and retain young, Serong, Logue, Alex Pearce, sean Darcy, Brennan Cox, and possible even David Mundy in the next year to 18 months. Letting Serong and young slip into 2023 on the last year of their contracts is asking for trouble. Darcy will be looking for $800k after his current deal runs out. We haven’t even mentioned any trade targets yet that will all be on inflated coin if they come.
Fyfe comes out of contract soon too and is still only 30. He’s not going to suddenly drop down to 450k per year just so we can keep guys like Blake acres and Ethan Hughes on the list an extra year.
Would people be ok with potentially losing the likes of Brennan Cox or Hayden young, in order to keep Blake acres on the list? Those are the kind of hard choices facing the list management team in the coming seasons. Richmond were happy to let Brandon Ellis walk to Gold Coast for a big payday for example, despite him playing in the wing for 2 flags. He was their Blake acres. But were they going to risk the likes of Shai Bolton or Nick Vlaustin or Balta walking out to door just to pay Ellis $500k for 4 years? Of course not. Conca was another chewing up their cap space and he was out the door to us pretty quickly too.

List management as a team rises up the ladder and everybody starts becoming more valuable is absolutely critical to the long term success of the club. Many an AFL club have perished on this rock in the last 20 years or so.
Keeping a premiership and top 4 list together as long as possible requires some serious hardball negotiations between clubs and players. It’s not something we have had to worry about for about 7 or 8 years but it’s emerging quickly into view now again.

List Management/Management are the ones who need to find the solutions. As happens at clubs like Carlton, Geelong and the Eagles there are ways for the club to find additional income opportunities for players. Our Chairman could bring out a series of homes inspired by spefic players;
  • The Schultz may feature stunning plumbing with grey water recycling.
  • The Acres may have extra garden space
  • Craberner Heights down at Mandurah
  • Darcy's Paddocks could be lifestyle blocks at Cowramup

Is 3 a carrier in Australia?; get them to sponsor Brayshaw, Serong and Young. Those guys are a sponsor's dream.

The club is staring at its best opportunity to build sponsorships right now; gear it towards player retention.

For me, I would 100% trade a top line player to balance our list and salary cap.

O’Driscoll Fencing - protects your boundary.

Logue Lockup’s - keep your back secure.

Mundy’s Mobility - gets our seniors up and active.

I was quite bullish on Ginnivan in the draft but not quite enough for us to get him, but I vaguely remember someone on the draft board being very, very big on him to the point where he had him first round when no one had anywhere near that early. Good spotting. Anyone remember who it was?

The Hughes deal is not that big a deal as he wouldn’t be on that much money. One year too much. He can spend that final year on the rookie list if needed. He is very handy depth. He played quite well for Peel yesterday.

Blakely hasn’t been the end of the world as some were predicting. Again handy depth. Played the Banfield sub role in 2021.

I believe the AFL will grant permission based off the interest from AFL clubs. Not sure who actually asks for it.

For example if I nominated for MSD, a bloke in his late 20s that hasn’t played footy in a decade (and lacks any footy skill whatsoever) probably doesn’t get an exemption. Although who knows how desperate West Coast are by then.

Derksen probably does get exemption though. As I said on the WAFL thread, I don’t think he’s top 5 in the MSD quality at this stage but he does have some ability - he may well slip through to us imo.
He is a good chance of getting through to us. Bailey Rogers also showing some form.

This article below from afl.com.au shows there are a few that will need an exemption:

“ANY MID-SEASON NOMINATION EXEMPTIONS?
THE AFL will lean on clubs' level of interest in prospects before deciding on making any exemptions for nominees for the NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

Rules state that for a player to be eligible they must have been overlooked in the most recent national draft or have previously been on an AFL list. AFL-listed players who retire must wait more than 12 months to enter.

There will be a number of applicants for exemptions this season but there will be no blanket exemptions from the AFL, with each nomination to be reviewed case-by-case.

Clubs are expected to be a part of the process as well, with genuine interest in drafting the players at the June 1 mid-season intake to be a key factor in decisions on exemptions.

Often players did not nominate for last year's draft due to being off the radar, playing in regional competitions and not viewing the mid-season draft the following season as a possible destination after two COVID-19 affected seasons.

Port Melbourne VFL prospect Will Reinhold did not nominate for last year's draft but has gathered interest as a possible mid-season pick if granted an exemption. Reinhold, who is a cousin of Brisbane spearhead Joe Daniher, is a tall defender with an excellent left-foot kick who has taken the eye at VFL level.

The 20-year-old has also been used up on the wing.

Hugo Hall-Kahan, who is playing for the Sandringham Dragons as an over-ager this season, would also require an exemption if he wanted to nominate for the mid-season draft after not nominating for last year's national draft.

Hall-Kahan's exciting start to the NAB League season – he has kicked 11 goals in the opening four games – has put him on the map, with bags of five and four goals so far. The medium forward, who is the nephew of former Makybe Diva racehorse trainer David Hall, is a strong mark over his head with an athletic leap. He turns 19 in September.

Last year there were around a dozen players given exemptions for the mid-season rookie draft, including former basketballer and young ruckman Alex Mirkov, who landed at Carlton.

Clubs are for the large part supportive of exemptions being given to players if it means an opportunity to be drafted is available.” - Callum Twomey

I wonder how much Mundy is on these days, roughly?

Posted this earlier on a different thread but I remember Knightmare loved him but the other draft watchers didn’t seem to rate him as much.

Highes has 3 years left, and is no where near 22.

Blakely would have been desisted 2 years ago I'd he was not contracted.

Hughes is Tucker and Tucker is Hughes.

Both list cloggers
Disagree with this I thought Tucker had a good game yesterday. Ross Lyon was talking him up on triple M this avo as a good part of our midfield depth too. Having a 100 gamer in there is no harm as the season progresses and some of our youngsters might get a bit tired

I disagree I think mortal Kombat is a very good game but I think donkey Kong is better.
