I'd say Hamling will want to be traded if possible or even accept a payout and retire if he cant get his body right before the end of the year. Meek would be crazy to not look at his options even though he is contracted. Possibly Sturt as well.

There’s still half a season left this year but there’s zero chance atm that any team would be interested in trading for Hamling.

Since the start of 2020 he’s played maybe five games across AFL and WAFL and has pretty much looked absolutely cooked when he has.

Unless something changes from here (we all know what he used to be capable of) we could easily delist him and place him on the rookie list imo.

You would be keeping Wilson for depth

Don’t think there’s such thing as easy list management calls but…

I’m not not sure I’ve ever seen a player over 26, not in their team’s best 25-26 players and not a KPP/ruck ever receive a new contract.

Thing is Hughes would’ve 100% been seen as best 25/26 when we re-contracted him mid last season. We ****ed up which happens.

How much depth is Wilson really if we prefer to roll James Aish back (reasonable option but creates a hole elsewhere) than bring him in.

I havent seen Hughes outdo Wilson in performance, so on what I’ve seen to me it makes sense to keep him in case
of injuries.

That said we don’t cut players under contract except under extreme circumstances, and we have cut a number who
didn‘t deserve it when they were out of contract.

Hughes is under contract + Wilson’s will run out this year so most likely he will be gone.

Last year what would we have done to have Sam Collins on our list, and we could have done with
Matt De Boer over the years as well. Taylin Duman is one we might regret as well.

Lol. We’ve been through this enough. Delisting De Boer was 100% the right decision at the time. This board thought he was ****ing useless until the WAFL finals. He’d been sh**e at AFL level for us since the 2013 GF. Good bloke, ordinary footballer.

Collins is the only questionable delisting we’ve made imo and at the time I must admit I thought it was the right decision.

The Collins delisting definitely surprised me. Thought he looked pretty solid and was projecting to be a great defender. Hasn't surprised me at all how good he's been for gc bc anyone could've seen that. What were the reasons behind his delisting? Obviously now it looks OK with our backline fully healthy but we really could've used him the past couple years

Pretty sure his moustache was the reason.

His foot skills were terrible. At Peel it was quite embarrassing at times. Then you consider Pearce and Hamling both lock downs and it really made sense.

To be fair (and like Sam Menagola) he went back the seconds (VFL in this case) worked his butt off and rightly got selected by Gold Coast under that concession rule thing, where they could select a bunch VFL players as an essentially free hit.

I’m glad for Sam Collins and I agree he could of stayed on the list but he took on delisting and exit meeting feedback and carved out a senior career. He would be plugging away as a WAFL player if still on our list.

Keen for another Brodie. There’s a few around. Would’ve had minded someone like Clark or Dunstan. Probably a bit slow and not great ball users.
Be interesting if Fremantle are still looking at Narkle. He’s been poor this season

His speed was an issue. He did a great job of hiring a specialist speed coach, whatever you call them. Worked on it and looks better. He was a Alex Silvagni type at Fremantle

There's been too much smoke for it not to be true. Also Melbourne need the cash for Jackson.
Jako you have got it wrong on Gus Brayshaw. Believe me he’s an outstanding player.
Watched him and jackson very closely today while sitting in the ponsford stand. To me Brayshaw was arguably the best player on the park, in one of the strongest AFL teams we have seen for many many years. He was just everywhere. I’m not sure what I’d describe him as. Maybe an elite, A grade version of James Aish would be the best way to describe him.
He can play in pretty much any position on the park apart from the key position slots. The ultimate utility player. I’d say he’s a coaches dream.
He is easily in their top 5 players and would be a HUGE loss to their team.
Jackson - I must say I was a tad disappointed today. We would be buying potential with Luke. He’s got an unorthodox kicking style that bothers me a little bit. Can he impact games consistently to a high level would be my question? He’s DEFINITELY not worth $1m a season yet anyway. He does some special things and has amazing power and agility for a big guy but tends to disappear for stretches.
Gus is the value recruit for me for freo. He would be about as safe a bet as you could ever dream. If he’s available just snap him up, no questions asked.

Best wishes.
Someone mentioned a rivalry between Richmond and Fremantle.
Had never heard of it.
Impressed by the story of Michael Frederick, his family fleeing war-torn Sudan, now an AFL star.
Very inspiring story.
Many people, in Melbourne, want Freo to scalp the Dees.

Good writeup! I never doubted Gus' ability and he automatically comes into b22. The comparison to Aish is pretty much spot on as well. I guess my whole point is that when you weigh the benefits against the risks, the risks are much bigger. Say we get Angus and Fyfe and Mundy both retire this season, our midfield would look like this:

Andrew Darcy Serong
Angus Brodie X

Wingers: Acres, Noddy

How do you fit Erasmus, Johnson, Chapman which are all b22 into one position? You don't, and that's if Fyfe and Mundy retire this year! The reality is that Mundy has another year in him and Fyfe 2-3 years. So how long will you ask our first round picks to wait in the WAFL? Only Chapman was a Freo supporter growing up so good luck retaining the others. All this risk for an upgraded Aish, no thanks.

We have a very good transition game currently without the contested marking of Nathan Fyfe in the side. Have so many forgot what he can do? We play up the line for stoppages quite a lot, if a third of those are instead directed at the midfielder requiring a tall defender to stop him marking the ball we retain possession and that stoppage is inside forward fifty or one of our smalls is running it inside fifty for a shot.

Our clearance game is also really average. If we can add another four goals a game from stoppages because we have one of the best clearance players in the league added to the team we can take it up another notch.

Collins wouldn’t get a game at Fremantle and when he was delisted he worked hard on his game. The fact that nobody pick him up until after a year at VFL says a lot.

De Boer was a role player who was played out of position. Not sure why a rebuilding keeps a defensive forward?

With good load management you allow Johnson and Erasmus to play a fair bit of games.

Hamling will see the contract through. Has no desire to leave. Good depth. Very unlucky with injuries. Freo will gift Wilson a game to get him to 150 and then delist him. Meek has one gear and can be painful to watch at times. Has a year to run and I can’t see any team coming to chase him. Will see out his contract and end up like Scott Jones.

Disagree on Meek. He’s improved every season. Is still quite young as far as ruckman go.

Wilson surprises me, I still think he’s an afl level player with his speed and kick. Personally our rebounding small defenders depth is only Clark and Walker. Other players like Aish and Tucker are shoehorned and we’ve proven Young, Chapman, Ryan and Logue don’t match up well on smalls.
