Training 2022 Pre-season

This is very interesting. Had never thought of a guy like Tom Mitchell in that light. I do think the whole "Possessing the ball for long chains" is not quite as relevant in AFL as it is in NFL though. In NFL it is very noticeable when comparing points scored in 1st halves vs 2nd halves - defences really seem to get worn down over the course of a game over there.

Certainly would love to see faster and deeper inside 50 entries however, but from M Malice's training report yesterday, early signs are that we can expect more of the same in 2022... clear all the big blokes out and hope the little blokes can get on the end of it. I think it's a mistake, but hey what do I know?
I think back to Rocklif with us, same really high possessions, high 30's and 40's and yes in a poor team where the possessions were there to get but Rocky chipped it sideways, handballs a lot and didn't do much damage in gaining distance. Now if i go back a while I think of Drummond with that booming left foot hitting Brown and Lynch from 60 meters away and splitting the game open. Just like Rich whom can also gain enormous meters but like Drummond have many less touches.

We often look at individual pieces of play as an event in their own but I think of Drummond, Black, Voss hitting Brown or Lynch, lace out on the chest and a goal having a 5 to 10 minute effect on the game, changing momentum. I don't see Rocky, Mitchel shooting out 20 handballs as having a lasting effect, yet a brilliant short term one but not lasting. I'd rather the 'Qtr Back' if thats the term, Hodge, Rich, Birtchel at his best, Drummond - someone who looks 60 meters away and changes momentum. I would add Richo with a 60 meter goal running around someone not marking up is way more soul destroying than a flick out of congested play and has opposition pointing and blaming each other. Midfield extractors are great and important but I value the momentum swingers much more to watch.

Not beyond the realms he hasn’t peaked..main thing is I guess he continues non injury phase

Yep, came pretty close to a 40+ goal season last year. Played only 30 games in first 6 years and has had good (touch wood) injury-free run with us now. He could unlock another level of performance potentially.

No doubt Hugh can be a full time mid but i don't see that happening next year for team balance
Each year he has got a bit more pure midfield time in games and i see 2022 being the same.

I don't see us improving as a team if Hugh goes into a full time mid role excluding multiple injuries from others

He would not take the roles of Neale or Lyons. Nor Jarrod Berry if we include him
Would Hugh be much better than Zorko and the hopefully improving Bailey when they are in the midfield. Possibly yes/no but not much difference either way
Then we have Rayner coming back who will get more midfield time. Then McCarthy gets a bit also during games
None of the above players are a better pure wing than Hugh although they do spend some time there during the game
Hugh is arguably the best pure wing in the AFL and i would keep him there for now

The other wing spot is Robbos to lose. Could be Prior, Dev Robertson, Sharp or someone from left field.
I see one of this group starting on the field with one other on the interchange bench
I think Dev is a reasonably good chance to cement that spot, just have a slight doubt on his speed. I like him as an inside mid but hard to see him dislodging any of the current mids.
Looking forward to the trial games

McRae and Mitchell are guns and I'd have either in a heartbeat.

McCluggage is a very promising player whom we're hoping will take the step to the elite class. Just a bit more strength and more consistency in his disposals and he could get there. He's now 23 so should be entering his golden years. I'm not convinced on him being best utilised as a pure mid but he'd obviously still be a good one if he was.

Looks like we agree to disagree
We will lose big time on the wing but gain very little if anything as a team if Hugh moves into the mid full time
Lets see where he ends up playing as that is where the coaches think is best for the overall team structure
My bet is it will be wing with about 5-10% full time midfield

I am intrigued as to who you have playing wing if Hugh moves to fulltime midfield
Your post 305 on best 22. Basically is :- start Robbo as he is safe then hopefully transition to one of the younger boys
So your wings and center (at this stage as we all change our best 22) are:- Robbo ? + Center ? + Wing ?

Also who are your bench 4 (not sub) at this stage and their position ?
.................
As a comparison i posted a best 22 on Oct 17 and can guarantee it will change once intraclub games start
Below is my center line and interchange.
The team also has Rayner, Lyons, Neale & McCarthy. At present no J Berry, Cockatoo, D Robertson & Sharp. All these could make best 22
If we get through preseason with no injuries we are in a great position selection wise

C.: McCluggage, Bailey, Robbo
Int: Zorko (mid/fwd), Prior (wing/def) Ah Chee (def/fwd/wing) Fort (ruck/fwd)
My best 22 changes a lot during pre-season so I wouldn't read too much into that. I'd put the wing position up for grabs between Sharp, Prior and Ah Chee. I still believe if Hugh is playing in the middle he will still get involved in transition in a similar way that he does on the wing.

Dev didn’t test at the AFL combine due to a shoulder injury but at the WA testing his 20m time was 2.92seconds which would have been top 5.

I’d say that’s quick enough

Why do you doubt his speed?

He recorded the third fastest on field sprint during a game this year by a Lion.

I only had a slight doubt, but posters have stated nothing to worry about, so more confident he will push for a permanent spot earlier in 2022.

Honestly I think he would make a big enough difference in the middle to be worth it. I thought the game against Freo later in the season was when our midfield looked really balanced and probably at its best for me and it was made up of Lyons, McCluggage and Berry. Obviously a fully fit Neale probably changes that but Hugh's running power and class through the middle could be a real difference maker. I also like the depth and quality we have that play his spot on the wing.
I think McCluggage has deceptive speed. And a tank that has improved massively in his time at the lions. His goal v Port out of the centre was a glimpse of what he is capable of. Got it from the centre square ball up, handballed off, received goal from 50m at full pace. I have no idea of his tackle stats, I feel as though he is more of a chance at stopping the other side bursting out of the middle than Lyons or Neale. But that's more a gut feel.

Didn't know that. Good to hear. I haven't noticed his pace. I think he could be an absolute star though. Some of his inside work is sublime. He seems to be very strong too, great core strength. I think he needs to be told he is a starting 22 player over summer, his spot to lose as long as puts in work. Give him some confidence. His kicking looks a tad awkward but seems quite effective.

If Ashcroft and Fletcher are with us for the pre-season and during the season they play for us, then it kinda feels like we drafted them this year as underagers (just w/o the ability to get them to play for our senior team). They will be completing a full preseason and getting to know our structures, the way we play, rapport building with all the boys etc so it will help them massively beginning of next year

I wonder if there are any restrictions on how much they can be involved during the next 12 months.

Would be great to have them play as many VFL games as possible and come up for training during school holidays.

There are restrictions on the amount that they can be involved in training with the AFL team.

Ashcroft though is finished school so technically he could play a few VFL games without too much drama especially the Victorian games.
