I think back to Rocklif with us, same really high possessions, high 30's and 40's and yes in a poor team where the possessions were there to get but Rocky chipped it sideways, handballs a lot and didn't do much damage in gaining distance. Now if i go back a while I think of Drummond with that booming left foot hitting Brown and Lynch from 60 meters away and splitting the game open. Just like Rich whom can also gain enormous meters but like Drummond have many less touches. This is very interesting. Had never thought of a guy like Tom Mitchell in that light. I do think the whole "Possessing the ball for long chains" is not quite as relevant in AFL as it is in NFL though. In NFL it is very noticeable when comparing points scored in 1st halves vs 2nd halves - defences really seem to get worn down over the course of a game over there.
Certainly would love to see faster and deeper inside 50 entries however, but from M Malice's training report yesterday, early signs are that we can expect more of the same in 2022... clear all the big blokes out and hope the little blokes can get on the end of it. I think it's a mistake, but hey what do I know?
We often look at individual pieces of play as an event in their own but I think of Drummond, Black, Voss hitting Brown or Lynch, lace out on the chest and a goal having a 5 to 10 minute effect on the game, changing momentum. I don't see Rocky, Mitchel shooting out 20 handballs as having a lasting effect, yet a brilliant short term one but not lasting. I'd rather the 'Qtr Back' if thats the term, Hodge, Rich, Birtchel at his best, Drummond - someone who looks 60 meters away and changes momentum. I would add Richo with a 60 meter goal running around someone not marking up is way more soul destroying than a flick out of congested play and has opposition pointing and blaming each other. Midfield extractors are great and important but I value the momentum swingers much more to watch.
