Training 2022 Pre-season

Training this afternoon at Yeronga >

1- Got there early and the grandson had a kick to kick with the player of the centuries grandson.
2- Great to see Kai Lohmann and Darcy Wilmot there, Darcy certainly is a keen vocal fella and was not averse to getting involved and screaming for the ball in the early drills.
3- Noah Answerth looking ripped.
4- Lot of work on spearing the ball into forward 50, players noticeably going for the low bullet pass.
5- Bruce Reville was there and I think another academy guy from last year but couldn't figure out who it was.
6- They had a semi competitive 11 v 11 cross field game, Ashcroft looked sharp in this, a couple of really nice kicks.
7- Fages had some alone time with the 2 new guys, as did Lethal.
8- Richy and Blake doing laps, Rayner and Hippy very uninvolved, just strolling around, must have been a rest day for them.
9- Left a little early as the grandson was getting hungry, boys still doing kicking/handball drills.

I think he wanted my son to have a kick with him but my dopey kid didn't take the hint (I had both my boys there, the older one under sufferance as he has no interest in footy whatsoever. He was being a whiney teenage shit)

Zorko played back in the competitive match. Ashcroft looked right at home. Cocky is definitely fitter and lighter. Lachie is moving like the 2020 version.
Cocky looks 1000 percent on this time last year.

Over heard Leigh Matthew’s chatting and saying that he thought we played our best footy this last year when Joe Daniher played as the second ruck.
So I wouldn’t be surprised if we go back to that option once Hippy is back in the team.

If Ashcroft and Fletcher are with us for the pre-season and during the season they play for us, then it kinda feels like we drafted them this year as underagers (just w/o the ability to get them to play for our senior team). They will be completing a full preseason and getting to know our structures, the way we play, rapport building with all the boys etc so it will help them massively beginning of next year

Hopefully Ashcroft might confirm he’s going to nominate for F/S after doing the preseason. Conscious that he has been living in Melbourne.

Unless you’re Collingwood, and sign your father son kid to a four year contract a couple of months out from the draft.
Would be happy if the club were to do that. He looks like a pretty class act to me.
But that stinks of desperation from Collingwood there.
Both Ashcroft and Fletcher will be Lions.

I understand the perceived uncertainty by some regarding the father-son commitment not being locked in but why on earth would the boys not want to play for the Lions - both would have grown up as Lions boys and have enormous family pride in their father's achievements at the Club...the alternative is the Draft uncertainty about where they might end up - at a club for whom they have no emotional connection, at least initially.

Might want to play in Melbourne for one of the big 4. Nothing more magical than lifting up a 17th cup for Carlton.

I guess the possibility is that Ashcroft becomes a clear cut #1 draft pick and the side coming last could get in his ear. Eg if Collingwood finishes last, it might be a little tempting for a young bloke to go to a big club in a footy state where he would likely walk into the best 22. If his parents are still down there, it would add a greater incentive.

I still think that (a) Ashcroft will almost certainly end up in Brisbane, and (b) there's not much point wringing our hands about him going elsewhere given we can't control it.

I get the Marc Murphy scenario plays in supporters' minds but it was 15 years ago, when our club was not particularly well run. And the vast majority of Father-Sons since then have all gone to their dad's club. I think we're pretty safe to plan around Ashcroft being a Lion in 2023.

New kids have got there numbers, if you check out the clubs website under Teams.

1. Lohman
29. Tunstill
44. Wilmot
Darcy Fort is also number 32 for us now, if anyone was wondering about him.

How is Joe Daniher going? Haven't seen him in practice photo's, although I may have missed some perhaps.
He has been at the 3 sessions I have been to, he's looking fit and healthy like most of the squad, on that Kalin Lane looks a long long way off endurance wise, always the last and looks to be struggling in the endurance sessions. The 2 guys I don't think I've mentioned are >

1- The Big O is training the house down, puts in 100% in every single drill and runs himself to exhaustion, tipping him to have a great season and go up another level.

2- Brandon Starcevich, I can honestly say I don't recall seeing him at the sessions I have been to, I did ask someone else watching had they seen him and they said yes though. I purposely kept an eye out for him on Wednesday and couldn't spot him.... probably my fading eyesight though, I did get a reminder from my optometrist this week that an eye test is due.

I don't recall seeing him Wed. Don't think I saw Charlie either?

I reckon Clug is probably more damaging in less congested areas where he can use his kicking for delivery into the forwards..not saying he couldn’t play mid but wouldn’t like to see him do it more than about 40%
I tend to think the opposite. I think Hugh's most damaging attribute is his ability to find space for himself in congestion. Also another thing I have noticed is he makes space for himself and then most of the time elects to kick rather than handball. Always looking to open the game up.

I believe it's safe to say he is good in both situations. Fingers crossed we get a full year of him at his best in 2022.

The big O will need to be at his best because should he have a lapse in form at any time of the season, Fort will be there breathing down his neck. Great to see him really give it his all...looking forward to seeing him dominate in 2022.
