Mitch Cox (Frankston – VFL)

Age:
24

Position: Utility (190cm, 81kg)

A ready-made player that’s gaining interest from AFL clubs after a breakout 2021 VFL campaign. Cox had a great start to the year in defence, averaging 21 disposals and five intercept possessions from his first five matches. He was then switched forward and, from Round 6 onwards, played as a mid-forward. The move paid dividends as he averaged 23 disposals, four clearances, eight score involvements and two goals per match. That stretch included two monster games: 5.1 from 28 disposals against the Northern Bullants then 4.2 from 20 disposals against Port Melbourne. Cox’s on-field surge came off the back of a strong pre-season where he improved his fitness significantly. His ability to play various roles would appeal to AFL clubs.
wonder if he'll be at the session tomorrow?

I am one who was hoping to see Zorko bring his pressure, tackling and energy to the forward line this year. I think we need at least one of our forwards to have little to no interest in how many goals they kick.

I'm not sure a forward line of
McCarthy McStay Cocky
Fort Daniher Cameron
+ Rayner, Bailey, Neale, Lyons
is defensive/ selfless enough.

I did see Ah Chee provide some great defensive efforts late in the season before he was omitted. I wonder if these were more highlight moments though, (which any of the above are capable of) or a more commited selfless role. Other players who might perform this role well Mitch Robbo or Dev.

In summary I'm nervous about our defensive pressure. I am hoping it's something we are focusing on when setting up our forward line.
I think McStay and MaCarthy defensive effort is undersold.......with cameron and Daniher the point is valid

Below VFL stats for Mitchell Cox taken from link below.
Site also has stats for AFL, AFLW & VFLW
Agree with Briztoon in that it is a bit of an odd choice along with say a half back flanker
Thought if they got someone to train it may have been a KPP
Club still could pick up another player training with another club i suppose. Or nobody at all.

Sort of a strange pick up in my opinion.

It’s not like we’re short of mid forwards. Guess he’ll add depth for our vfl team.

That was my first impression too.

Maybe it's a case of we like him, think he's a bit of a late bloomer & might come on well now in an AFL environment.

Not like we have much to lose though tbh.

Fair enough point, but I still want more. And yes, we do have to cover for Cameron and Daniher. Unfortunately there is often an all or nothing approach by those two and some sulking/ indifference as the ball heads out of our backline. You get the good with the bad though and Cameron in particular lifts his defensive side often when it is needed or the opportunity for a turnover presents itself.

Thing that occured to me here is Daniher snuck in on photo 6 or 7 and doesn't seem odd. For Essendon would always have been front and centre. I think that's what Joe wanted and could help bring out the best in him. Underrated season last year after almost three full missed seasons, I think he'll bring a great deal this year and be in the top 5 or so tall forwards going around. Like him playing second ruck too, useful once the ball hits the ground and good field kick. Don't always need a bruiser.

Got this from the Moreton Bay Lions Facebook site
The comment was dated 5/2/2022 so maybe not completely correct
It is a start until someone finds something more recent or definite

So great to see so many of you at sign on today.
Thanks so much as usual to all our incredible volunteers who made the club flow so well for all of our members new and returning.
Don't forget also that the Brisbane Lions will be playing an intra club game on the 18th Friday week at about 3pm. Bring the kids down to watch the guys go through their paces.
We will update here soon also our schedule around game days so you can start planning.
We will also be going out shortly to all of our members to secure your commitment to a couple of hours during the season where you can help out your club.
Lots of good stuff to come at your club!!

Has form down back too, versatility is nice in the reserves.

I agree Briz does seems strange but maybe it's about his flexibility. Don't know him from a bar of soap but says he started last year back then moved mid-forward. If he can play a few position that would handy to have waiting in the wings.

Not sure why it so hard to believe a slow plodding mid would potentially be replaced with a more dynamic type that can hit the scoreboard. If Zorko is to spend less time in the midfield we do lose a bit of spark within that rotation, that will need replacing. Stingrays video.

Wonder why he was never drafted, because his draft highlights package look pretty decent.
I don’t mind it if we do pick him up, he looks like a bit of a Zorko type of player, a bit of Zip, Zap…..Cox about him
