I've never quite been sold on Martin as a forward. When playing for the Suns it was the position he played least. Most of his time was spent behind the footy, on the wing or in the middle. Forward was only ever pinch hit for a qtr. I think by now we've seen why, he only shows up for qtrs at a time now and then as a forward.

Maybe with McGov out he's worth trying down back or as a marking winger. He's a good intercept and a good kick, we could use his class coming out of defence or as a marking wingman who drifts forward.

His best role is probably that high half forward role that fisher is playing at the moment. Not suited as a deep forward where we have been playing him. Doesn't have the nouse and is a really poor kick at goal. Also doesn't have the tank and accumulating ability to play midfield / wing. Half-back could be a go like you said but we are stocked in that area so don't really need him there.

Training as a radiologist atm, probably with a subspecialty interest in musculoskeletal/sports imaging in 5 years... terribly long path, but sports imaging is cool.
do you see this image in our future?

You stated Setters has been poor in every single facet, which I believe is an overreaction. He has gone from a bloke that many had as a delisting to now playing a role as a defensive wingman in 3 of our wins

Can he do more, sure, just like Weiters or Walsh from their high standards of previous years
No I didn’t. I said 3 things.
(also, i said he was a good tackler, and thought his primary role should be as a mid.)
If u want to tell me he’s good at those things, go for it, but don’t make up statements I didn’t make.

Problem is we have 25 half backs and all who will play it better than him.

Maybe try him on Setterfields wing?

Get Durdin and Stocker in, we need their intent. Dow to hopefully cause a selection dilemma when Cripps is back next week.

Plow to make way for Stocker - he's playing a nothing role right now, if he's not going to play tall or intercept he should make way for a proper "small". Bring Parks in if we're keeping the Rd 1-2 structure.

Durdin, Pittonet, Stocker are the three hopeful ins.
Dow also a chance.
Outs: Boyd, Plowman, Cripps, Fogarty.

I'd not blink much of an eye if Martin or Fisher got a wake up call.

11:05 VFL on Sunday (Ikon Park vs RFC) tis a wake up call. Though back to back watching of games, thorough day of sport coming up Easter Sunday.

After being cut to pieces by Hawthorn and The Gold Coast, I think there is going to have to be an emphasis on our stoppage play. For some reason that's come undone and our team defence. If we defend really well and we are good at the stoppages then we win this game. You do those things then your defenders and your forwards have a better chance, providing we don't go back into our other classic weakness, forward half turnovers.

Carlton at their best dominate the midfield, lock the ball in our forward half and keep the opposition from moving the ball quickly and directly.

Carlton at our worst turn the ball over easily in our forward half and allow too many forward half intercept marks. Struggle at stoppages with physical defensive tactics and do very poorly at defending against short kicking and corridor play.

The heat is on, it's on the players but gee is it on the coaches and the game plan right now because that's a week and a half where we have been out coached and the game plan exposed.

Pittonet in will make a big difference. We need to sort the lack of a third tall defender out and that may mean McDonald, Weitering and Young play. Dow gets a chance which might be a good thing. Durding straight back in is a big deal for our forward line. Motlop could debut but not playing this weekend due to covid might hurt his chances.

Bounce back and get things right. Make sure we fix these issues and get back to playing the game on our terms.

I can never get why he hasn't been played on a wing. He looks like someone who could play that role. He doesn't look like a genuine forward to me either. Does nothing when the ball hits the deck and takes the odd mark, that's it.

Our wings aren't a strong point so why not play him on the wing in the VFL for a bit and see if he gets there.

You rated him poor in 4 of 5 attributes

And, when you say I have been keeping an eye on him, fo you mean on TV, where you can't see his workrate or what he does off the ball?

For mine, wingers need elite running capacity, particularly to fill “space” and deprive the opposition of options. LoB and Setters do have deficiencies, but they can freakin’ run. For that reason, don’t think Jack’s suited to a wing. In fact, the opposition would likely exploit him.

Yeah I have thought that maybe he can't run the distance. Ideally you want your wingers to have some pace and ability to cover some serious territory. He has pace but yeah, probably doubts over his endurance week in week out.

Im Not too fussed by changes in personnel moreso changes in attitude.
Feels like we have been solidly beaten for about 7 qtrs in a row and we need to take control back.
Crippa will miss so give Dow a shot at top level. He’s earnt it.
Stocker is best 22. In for Newman who is solid but I believe was responsible for Rosas last week who got free and out the back too often.
Would love to deliver Martin and Fish a kick in the backside. Fish for his disposal and Martin to become more involved and intent.

“Don’t want to knee jerk after one loss, but some of our vulnerabilities were “spectacularly” put on show on Sunday. I had a first hand viewing of the debacle as well as the reserves game.

There were some sub standard efforts from a range of players. We did not have the mindset to take on a side bringing maximum intensity while we has a couple of key absentees.

Durdin’s pressure is a fire starter, his energy is infectious. Do not also underestimate his game awareness. He is the most game savvy member of our forward line and already does more directing than most realise. We have some highly talented forwards, but intelligence is not in oversupply outside of Durds, JSOS and Owies. Harry, Charlie, TDK, Martin and Fisher get by on ability and instinct alone, but all have the fault of believing their own hype a little too much at times. Our structures suffer accordingly too often.

Durdin in providing he has recovered from Covid. Who goes out? Late replacement Fogarty is the first. My first thought was that Motlop needed a bigger body of work to assume a spot which is clearly his very soon. Then I thought Owies, Fisher and Martin were all sub par on Sunday. Port’s biggest chance to win this game is their defence. A strong team defence is what they offer. They will “dominate” a disjointed forward line. Motlop’s family is 50% SA and 50% WA, he would relish a debut on that turf. Uncle Steve playing for the oppo adds another layer as well. If young Jesse is going to come up short, it will be on the pressure “patterns”, making retention of Owies a priority. Fisher or Martin in the firing line for mine. I have Fisher offering least and am over his dinky little moves that rarely add anything to our connection and are often counter productive in that area.

If Pitto is fit must come in, with some question over his readiness, TDK holds his spot and gets a chance to earn back some credit. Love young Tom as a prospect, but his ruck work is one dimensional. Is it him, or is it coaching? Needs to reacquire a bit of grunt and advance his career. (Still think he may be a key defensive prospect if given opportunity)

Stocker is generation next in defence. Did enough to reclaim his spot and for mine replaces either Plowman or Newman. A little depends on their line up. Marshall and Georgiades were their talls last week. Lycett under a cloud, a possible debut for Sam Hayes. Hard to see them playing him one out, so perhaps Finlayson get’s a recall or they get creative. Do we need Plow as a third tall? If not he makes way, it they bring in a third tall then Newman becomes the casualty. (I would not complain if Parks got a gig as a third tall either, depending on the mix) Georgiades will be the biggest threat so will need a suitable athletic match up. While poor last week, Young is our best bet here (allowing OMac another week or some managed minutes in the twos). Weiters more than a match for Marshall.

Thinking both defences are a relative strength with our forwards having more weapons if they can get adequate delivery. Wines and Crippa out blunts both midfield groups. They have Boak and some decent youngsters who will have to step up phenomenally if our group is back in the job. It would be hard to deny Dow the chance to strut his stuff in the absence of the skipper.

That leaves us:
In: Stocker, Dow, Pittonet, Motlop, Durdin
Out: Cripps, Plowman(Newman), Fisher, Fogarty and Boyd(sub)
Pick your sub from the 23 Martin or Setterfield front runners

Plenty of changes, but four “no brainer“ ins and the fifth a matter of timing.

INS
Pitonett
Dow
Stocker
McDonald
Durdin

OUT
Plowman - depth
Boyd - same
Fogarty - same
Young - not a KPD
Cripps - gun

NEED TO LIFT
Fisher - not enough impact
DeKoning - same
Martin - same
Setterfield - not sold on the wing role

INSANITY PLAYING EIGHT DEFENDERS including Boyd as the sub last week

Motlop - forward
Kemp - third tall defender
Philp - forward/wing
Cottrell - winger

Cunners*- forward/midfield/wing🤞
Honey*- forward

Why are you (and many others) so quick to jump on Young? He isn't Weitering or Jones, but he provides just as much as OMac does and has youth and a non-broken body on his side.

I would be persisting with him.
