I think the issue with Philp is he has never had a run at it, always injured. If he does, he's one we will want in the side.

I think there needs to be a focus on run. We're a tad slow. That's ok on the inside but we could do with a pace injection on the wing and up forward.

We missed Durdin last week. We have Kemp, Dow, Philp and Motlop all in reserve who have pace. We are really missing McGovern down back.

Yes most teams seem to want to stack the corridor and in fact stack the corridor and one side of the field trying to force play into a certain limited direction.

As you say - it is the uncontested ball movement that has hurt the most - and NONE of that is on the on ball brigade - it is all about the ineffectiveness of Carlton outside players from HFF and Flank - Martin and Fisher are serious weak links as far as high half forward play goes - and pretty much absent as far as forward defensive pressure goes.

It's actually on our coaching group. It's a team defence issue.

We certainly have issues there but it's all about where we defend as a team and we are full of holes and far too open up the middle.

Anyone noticed that we don't seem to be taking many intercept marks in defence this year? You could say it is personel with Jones out but Weitering hasn't been taking any either which makes me think it might be related to gameplan. We really need that part of his game back.
We need greater flexibility in approach. McGov with 2 fully functioniung hamstrings might do it.

Dow is a certainty to come in

Don't agree. Our structure actually looked better round 1 and 2 with the 4 mids. Playing the 5 since round 3 has pushed Cerra and Walsh to spending alot of time on a HFF where they don't look as comfortable. Definitely worth consideration but I wouldn't say it's a given.

Be interesting how Port go about this game, will they play like first 3 rounds or like against Melbourne.
Prefer them to play as they normally would as that’s what Voss has the IP on

Melbourne do it really well.

I can kinda live with LOB, Setters and Plowman staying in, but Martin definitely needs to be dropped and not as sub.

'but he is so classy'.......nek minute drops an easy mark
'but he uses the ball so well'........when he gets involved once a quarter
'but he is a good shot for goal'......nek minute misses an easy shot for goal
'but he is a good tackler'........when he can be bothered

Needs a month in the ressies - lets see what he is made of when made to work for a spot. Will he sulk or will he respond....

LOB and Setters are interesting.

Both play a defensive wing role. I'd love some attacking pace down the wing to boost our transition from defense.

Doesn't seem to be a priority in the game plan though.

I could not agree more with this and the proof was in the fact Lachie Weller was one of the best on ground on the weekend, not to mention the way the Hawks transitioned from their backline the week before.
Based on what I’ve seen over the past 12 months I’d rather Owies and Durdin over Martin and Fisher despite their relative youth as they are both willing workers.
We need to move past Martin and Fisher so I’m hoping that by seasons end the likes of Motlop and Honey have also played their way into the 1s so we can offload Martin and Fisher in the trade period.

There’s actually an argument to play Cottrell as a pressure forward ahead of Fisher and Martin whilst we wait for Honey and/or Motlop to get into the top team.

Feel confident that young Jessie Motlop will be given a guernsey this week, possibly replacing Martin. The kid will be an absolute star.

Would like to see this. Is a decent mark to go with his huge running capacity, and is the type that would respond well to an assignment/defensive job.

Both of those sides have had a fair amount of time under the same coach and gameplan ti build consistency and cohesion

Yeah we do have to remember and keep perspective that we had an entire new coaching group and game plan come in.

Voss has repeatedly said we aren't the finished article.

The last premiers melb and Richmond both took a while to get going under Goodwin and hardwick...if fact both went up the ladder only to fall back down, both coaches nearly sacked, then they won premierships.

I was wondering that. Ideally the third tall defender needs to be quick, that way they can play off their man a bit but have that closing speed to make the contest if it doesn't go straight to them. McGovern was so idea for that role, it's a shame he's injured again.

Young to me seems too slow and I would prefer someone better below their knees. But he or Weitering would be better than Plowman who offers nothing in that role.

Young to me is your old fashion lock down defender, don't try and be too clever, just play tight to the biggest forward and beat them.
I have big question marks on Young’s capacity to play key defender after watching how easily Chol out bodied him…so for mine he’s out this week provided Oscar is fit.

I’m really interested to see what Voss does at the selection - there are about 7 or 8 blokes who could be dropped after that performance - bring in Thursday night team selection!
